I've watched all of your videos, and used an incredible amount of information from them - Thank you! However, it was great to see things go slightly wrong in this clip, I thought it was just me that bad things happen to, I've lost many tools due to stiff bolts, rusted parts and frustration. The Vito 109 04, is my first vehicle of any sort, but I love learning new things so taken it upon myself to change/maintain as much on her as possible (The prices around my area are around £110PH (220 aus$) for labour!!) So far; 4 struts (rear and front) 4 springs (rear and front) Wiper motors Xenon lens's 2 window regulators + cabling a lot of electrical repair due to previous owner oil change steering wheel change indicator stalk tightening and a few cosmetics here and there Thank you for all your videos and sharing your vast knowledge with all of us, I hope there is more to come :) - Stewart

+stewart pearce Thanks Stewart. Have a look at the recent video I did on the front strut modification. I'll be doing the auto service video again mid year. This will be me doing my own vehicle and will be better than this video. My two mates have a rough enough is good enough attitude. It was one of the early tutorials so I was learning. Regards, Scott

Hi Dave ... thanks for your kind comment about the video. You can buy the dipstick cheaply off eBay. search for "Mercedes 722.6 dip stick". No you can't leave it in place as it's quite long. It will have about 200mm poking out when it's in place. Reuse the black plastic cap. and the broken red seal lock. You can also buy the little red locks on eBay if you like.

I've found a lack of DIY videos for the W639 Vito diesels. We need more of these videos especially for people in Australia where the stealerships charge a lot of money for simple work.

Hi there Scott, Did this job today. It took 2 hours....maybe a bit longer than expected as 4mm torque convertor drain bolt snapped off & too an age to get out. Apart from that the job was straight forward. I refilled with aprox 7.5 Litres of new fluid & I did NOT blow the lines out.

The clip on the filter that was removed was not inserted into the slot, so it was just hanging. There is a little trick to get the clip on some filters to go in. You have to gently press up with the clip over the slot and then slightly twist it left and then right around the main inlet, then the clip should go right into the slot and hold in. The Ryco ones need this, some other ones just seem to go straight in as the new one you installed. I suspect it depends on the type of plastic.

My brake fluid is due for changing soon so I was going to do a DIY about that. It's an easy job but you need a pressure bleeder. They're cheap on eBay. Thank for your comment.

Karen thanks for your kind words. The ATF to use is whatever has the Mercedes specification MB236.14. We used Fuchs ATF 4134 as it seems to be the easiest one to get hold of in Australia. Penrite Oil are getting more of their products to pass the MB specs so hopefully they may have something soon.

@ScottElliott152

Adam Kormendy Hi Adam. I like to do the transmission often as it's the best way to keep it in top condition. Because it's quite easy work I tend to do it every three years or 40,000km whichever comes first. MB say filled for life which is nonsense however they've now indicated there maybe benefit in doing it every 60,000 km or 4 or 5 years.I'll do this video again as I'm going to do my own transmission again soon. The current video on this subject has a bit too much horsing around and glosses over a few things. My two mates don't have as much mechanical sympathy as I do. Near enough is good enough for them whereas I like to do things properly.I feel spending $25 on a filter and $90 on new ATF every three years is dam cheap insurance and will keep the transmission like new. Regards, Scott

Hi Scott, What about cutting the dipstick to the right size? I thought this is just a trick to force you to do the service with the dealer and to pay big bucks to them. Otherwise I'll just do what you suggest and only use it to check the transmission fluid from time to time. Thank you, Regards, René.
@ScottElliott152

+Rene Ahumada You'd have to work out how to seal the tube. The black cap has an O-ring and is pushed into the tube to seal it properly. It's easier and safer to use the proper cap to make sure no dust, dirt or water go down that tube. I keep my 722.6 dipstick in the garage but you could easily store it in the van somewhere.

any particular reason why you don't use the dip stick level for 25 deg oil temperature?
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 8 жыл бұрын
Depends on the ambient temperature. You want to get the ATF nice and hot before you drain it. If you're efficient and are pouring the new ATF into an already hot transmission that new oil will be heated way above 25C. You either warm it up to around 80C or wait until it cools to 25C ... whichever is faster.

@ScottElliott152

Sam it should be easier. I'm pretty sure your model doesn't have thew thermo control valve on the LHS of the engine sump. You'll have the pressure side line coming out of the gearbox in the same place but it will go straight to the oil cooler. Also the oil line pushes into the transmission and is held with a clip or bolt. It's probably not the banjo fitting like mine. Have a look underneath first to work out what you've got. Everything else will be the same as it has the 722.6 transmission.

hi scott, i saw some video on youtube. Those people just put a 27mm hose into the hole for the transmission oil filter, and sunk the new fluid from that hose in order to do the flush. why you choose a more complicated method. and btw the dip stick i boought from the ebay has a plastic mesuring part which is not straight. do you think will it be ok to still use it.
@ScottElliott152
@ScottElliott152 7 жыл бұрын
Peng ... It depends how bent the plastic measuring part is. Try to straighten it if you can. The 27mm hose method won't flush the oil cooler if you have the thermo control valve as it will be closed. That's why it's done in two stages. Some 722.6 transmissions don't have that valve so the 27mm hose may work.

It's a 10mm bolt as explained. Drill down the centre and cross drill so the fluid can flow into the banjo fitting. A couple of washers either side with gaskets made from gasket paper. The other special tool has a bit of 3/8" heater hose on the end ground into a cone shape to push against the pipe end.

Hi Faith. This is the problem with many of the so called "professionals". It sounds like all he has done is drop the ATF out of the pan and not drained the torque converter. The TC holds about 4 litres or about half of the total quantity. So these guys only change half the fluid! and thereby contaminate the new fluid with the old. Do you know if he took the oil pan off and changed the filter? I think the 2012 model has a drain plug for the TC. It's very easy to get to and unscrew the drain plug. Would you be able to do the job yourself based on watching my video?

@ScottElliott152 9 жыл бұрын
Fatih Beydilli Faith I would say I was unhappy he did only half the oil as now you have a mixture of 50/50 old and new. There's hardly any point in only replacing half the ATF as the old stuff contaminates the new. The total volume required if you drain both the oil pan and the TC is between 7 & 8 litres and maybe more if you flush the oil cooler like we did.

If you don't your at the mercy of people like this. I just looked up the Workshop Information System and according to that there is a drain plug for the TQ. A Ng It's really quite simple to make one. You don't need a lathe. The main feature is drilling a hole down the centre and another one across. A 10mm bolt, a couple of metal washers and a couple of sealing washers then stick a plastic hose on the end. You could file the threads off the first 20mm for the plastic hose. Hope this helps. Put the thinking cap on and improvise. Hope this helps. kind regards, Scott

Hi @Scott Elliott, I highly appreciate your work with video, and, especially, your effort to answer all comments. It's fantastic. Thank you. Some questions from me. I have to change ALL transmission fluid on my MB w211 722.6. And I found this way is easier: disconnect transmission feed line to the radiator and connect plastic tube and drain oil, starting the engine. I believe that you got an idea (it described on video on youtube "Flushing Mercedes C230 722.6 Transmission Fluid" kzbin.info/www/bejne/baTcgGqJr7B-h5Y ). The question is, what is the practical difference between the 2 methods? Will I be able to drain ALL fluid using the second method (connecting to the feed line to the radiator), or is your method in some way is better? Thank you. Your time and answer are highly appreciated.
@ScottElliott152

Thanks Vlad. The video I made follows the instructions in the Mercedes WIS. I believe the method you describe is pumping the ATF out but not removing the oil pan to change the filter and clean the magnet and bottom of the pan. If you only wish to change the ATF then the process you describe will change most of the ATF. I don't support the idea of measuring what came out and putting the same volume back in. The level needs to be set using the 722.6 dipstick. What if the transmission had a weeping seal? It might have been at a low level before you started. I think it's important to remove the pan to clean and change the filter at least every 4 to 5 years and 60,000 to 80,000km. Perhaps a fluid only change in between the full service would be a good way to maintain the 722.6.

@@ScottElliott152 Scott, you're the Iron Man. The plan is, "Change oil" using the method "pumping the ATF" that I've sent the video above. After, remove the pan, clean it, replace the filter, replace the gasket, and plug. Place pan back. And add the correct amount of transmission oil according to MB procedure (cold and warm state, using the 722.6 dipstick). Hopefully, In this way, I'll be able to change the oil: transmission itself, torque converter, radiator, lines. Does it make sense? Will this work?
