My Mom's 2013 C300 4matic with 76K miles started shuddering (4 wheel drive locking), I called the dealerships and a shop nearby and they both wanted $900 dollars to change the fluid, but after watching your extremely detailed video I'm just going to do it my self and save $600, I'm not an auto mechanic but I had changed an Audi quattro transmission and timing belt by my self so this should be a piece of cake, I'm also a KZbinr and I know all the extra work of filming while fixing something, I really appreciate it, Thank You

Thanks! Yes, apart from showing you how to DIY (if you want to) the other purpose of the video is to help you gauge if it fits with your current knowledge level. If not, at least you know what to discuss with a service shop - Make sure they use the right fluid, change the internal filter and carry out the level check and top up correctly. 👍 Cheers, Phil

I just found your channel and watched the video on changing the trans fluid on the Mercedes. I recently purchased a used 2011 E350 Cabriolet and have changed my oil already but not my trans fluid or filter. Your video was very easy to learn with and gave me the confidence to go forward with attempting to do this myself! Thanks for the helpful content and you will be saving me a TON of money I am sure! The dealer wanted $350 just to do an oil change (which I would NEVER pay as I am quite handy) but there is no telling what the bill would be to do a transmission fluid/filter service! Keep doing what you do and helping us DIY’ers out here!

Thank you! Congrats on the purchase, that's a very nice car and it sounds like you plan on looking after it! Yes, the tranny service is even more expensive and surprisingly, I have heard stories that some dealers don't even specify a tranny service and hence don't know how to do them! One of the reason I do my own is that I know it is being done correcntly. Cheers for you comment, Phil

Great video and you really explain stuff so clearly. It’s frustrating just how easy so many jobs become if you’ve got a lift! Otherwise the plebs like me have to try and do this stuff lying on our backs. I’d gladly pay a garage to do this because if that, but I’m not going to lie I really do not trust them to do this properly and not cut corners (drain torque converter, clean everything, check the level etc.

Wow they should hire you to do Mercedes instructional videos. One of the best tutorials I’ve seen. I’ve had my fluid changed two times in the past 3 years and it seems to be worsening each time. I am wondering if the dealer out in the wrong fluid or did something wrong. What would happen if I require the blue fluid and they put red? Also I was wondering if I simple wanted to add a bit of fluid like trans seal product would I need to run the car?
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide Жыл бұрын
Thanks @adama7031 🙂 From what I have been told, the earlier cars that don't have engine stop / start will run on both fluid types. The later cars should have the blue because the fluid is more robust. So, it depends on what you mean by "getting worse"? what are your symptoms? I'll be honest, I wouldn't have my transmission serviced by any garage unless they could tell me exactly which fluid they are going to put in and how they plan to check and adjust the level. These transmissions are super reliable but are sensitive to both fluid type and correct level. BTW, I think it is unlikely that your transmission is damaged, it is probably as you say, wrong fluid or wrong level and could be fixed by having it serviced by someone who specialises in or knows Mercedes transmissions. Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil - I found this video very useful apart from one thing: The torque specs for the transmission sump bolts on my 2006 SLK 55 AMG 722.9 transmission is 4 nm NOT 8 nm. Congratulations, what a lovely detailed, blow by blow explanation. An enjoyable watch. But what a lot of faffing about, whatever was wrong with a dipstick & tube where the level could be checked/topped from above where this is all that is needed. It does make one wonder why vehicle manufacturers go to such seemingly unnecessary lengths. Likewise all these different coloured oils, when I was a mechanic, all we ever used was TQF. Thanks again.
@ReviveMyRide
@ReviveMyRide 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comments! I know right! I think Merc got themselves into a pickle. My opinion: Originally designed the tranny as filled for life but quickly realised that wasn’t working and came up with a procedure to allow them to be serviceable. No excuse for no dipstick though, anything can happen (slight leak for example) and a dipstick allows for a quick check and even a means of topping up! Agree about the fluids too, surely it was possible to keep it simple! They created a new fluid to better cope with the introduction of stop/start. On the latest 9g trannys I bet there is another new fluid again! Glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks again for your comments 👍☺️ cheers, Phil

Thanks for the video, I just did the change it and it was very helpful. Some comments: Your measurements are spot on I managed to get about 7.5l in, including the drained torque converter. I didn't have a new torque converter plug so had to reuse the old one. The hex female on it failed at the specified 10nm. Seesm to be made of Mercedes chocolate. Quite annoying but I had to leave it in. Personally I would meaure the level when the sump temperature is a little below 45C - the oil will be hotter than the outside surface of the sump. Great you have a garage lift. I had to use ramps at the front and jack up from the steel transaxle at the rear - fine to do with a bit of softwood and a decent hydraulic jack, followed up by axle stands on the rear jack points (after removing the rubber car jack fittings) . The difficulty without a garage lift is to get it level for the oil level check. I discovered that 'level' on the 4 jack points is not the same as level on a flat road - the car normally slopes down a little towards the front. What Mercedes want is 'level on the 4 jack points' not 'road level'. It makes a significant difference as the drain plug is well forward in the sump, not in the middle. So to get this, adjust the rear jack until the sills between the 2 jack points on each side are level, using a long spirit level. You also need to make sure the car is level across the width as the drain plug is not central. On my new drain plug the copper washer was loose. Of course in my haste it fell off between me picking it up and quickly screwing it in the leaking hole. Lucky I spotted it and re-did it, losing a little more oil. Beware there are, currently, 2 slightly different types of sump and two significantly different types of filter for the 722.9 with red fluid. The newer ''SmartMediaTriple' filter A221 227 01 00 is better than the old one A221 277 01 95 and works with blue and red fluid but it doesn't work with the old sump. I upgraded my sump to be able to use this upgraded filter and my replacement (second hand) sump fitted fine. The new sump is very slightly larger and it won't take the old filter. The old sump won't take the new filter. The only reliable source of info on this is the Mercedes document "722.9 MCT 7G tronic trans_tips_and_tricks.pdf". Google it and look at page 50. I can't tell which filter you fitted as it is a Febi and Febi say both types are Ok and they are not. The new one has only 4 dimples on the undersiude and the old one has 8 or more. The Febi one seems to have none. My experience is it is quite difficult to obtain the old one and no supplier will know of the incompatibility issue. The old rubber torque converter oval plug (A211 2710 180) has been replaced by a rigid plastic one (0009983121), probably because the rubber perishes slightly in ATF fluid. The rigid one fits OK but not snugly, keep the old one if the rubber is still OK. Re. the aluminium bolts, aluminium has a much larger heat/expansion ratio than steel. I would be wary of replacing the specified aluminium one swith steel. To get the oil in I drilled two holes in the cap of one 5l ATF container and fitted a car tyre/bicycle Schrader valve to one and a long plastic tube to the other. I then poked the tube to the bottom of the container and connected the other end to the sump using a cheap adapter. Then I connected a car tyre pump to the schrader valve. It's safe to put up to 10PSI into the container before it bursts (ask me how I know). 5PSI works fine . Then all the oil gets gently transferred into the sump. I used plastic brake hose clamps instead of a on-off valve.

Started to make me worry that I got the wrong fluid. Then you finally said 2010 is when they went to blue fluid. I changed my wifes 2008 clk350 fluid and filter two years ago. I like her car so much, I just got me one too. I can't find my adapter to change the fluid, but I think it might still work for me. The hose on my pump looks like it will fit snug up there, and I may be able to thread the hose onto it. I was just checking a video before starting this. LOL My wifes car is a lower VIN than the one I just got. Hers was taken better care of than this one I just got. Hers had the drain plug for the torque converter, so I expect this one will have it, too. When I did her fluid and filter 2 years ago, the fluid came out black. Two other videos I watched before doing it, they also had the black looking fluid. I wonder if it was ever changed before I bought it? Hers had 153K miles. Mine has 144K miles. I did buy new bolts for hers because two of the new aluminum bolts broke before the torque specs. I hope these don't brake on mine today. I checked the inch pounds coverted from 8 nuten meter, which was 70.81 inch pounds. I was so nervous tightening it. I started at 50 inch pounds and slowly worked my way up. I did get there safely. LOL I only got 4 quarts and about 1/3rd from the pan. I'm going to try to drain the torque converter now. The red Harbor Frieght fluid pump hose threaded on just enough to pump the fluid in.

Apologies, yes, you're right. To build the refill kit in the diagram at 13:46, you need the following parts: M12x1.5 (male thread) to 6mm ID (internal diameter) hose - Hosetail 0.5m Length of 6mm ID hose 2 x ¼” BSP (male thread) to 6mm ID hose - Hosetails Mini ball valve with ¼” BSP female threads on both sides 0.5L capacity Hand operated / Syringe type pump 4x 7-9mm ID hose clamps PTFE tape - apply to all threaded joints Sorry, I don't have the links for them all but they are readily available on Ebay and you can use the images in the diagram to make sure they are the right one. I chose a different valve for the kit because the one I used in the video is from my engineering days and is an expensive item for something that will only be used once or twice... Hope that helps! Thanks, Phil

Great video mate, followed your instructions, the job wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, bit of a pain doing it on the drive with axle stands due to limited space when working on the car. Also experienced the aluminium bolts snapping, they should provide steel bolts as standard with the kit. Again just wanted to say a big thank you.

Amazing vid,I wish I could do this,I have a 2000 E320 Wagon transmission is starting to have problems when cold, I have to let my wagon warm up 30 to 45 minutes before driving it after that works amazing,smooth and strong gears,I don't even feel the gears,but cold it doesn't work well,I'm starting to get really worried it's all I have to put food on the table, I live in USA and here you take it to a mechanic and then you have no transmission they will brake it,I don't trust anyone,same at the dealer they will brake it so they can charge you more ! I did spark plugs coils and wires myself, I have to get the tools parts and corage, Study this Videos well to do it myself otherwise Mechanics will destroy my wagon!Amazing thanks for your time!.

I’m a recently retired rocket scientist and I’ve been an automotive DIY’er since I was 12 years old. This gentleman’s video is the best available. I do have comments though. 1. Instead of going to steel bolts on the pan first try lowering g your torque setting a bit. Your wrench’s torque could be off. 2. After filled, it appeared to be leaking quite a bit of fluid when you pulled the drain/fill mechanism. Shouldn’t we wait until the drop stops? I’m other words, it appears that you didn’t let all of the excess fluid drain out with the transmission at temperature.

Hi, thanks very much for your kind comments! I get worried when highly qualified people view and comment on my videos! lol! but here we go... 1. Yes, you are correct, the torque rating was right at the bottom of what my torque wrench can do and I suspect it's accuracy wasn't good enough at the bottom of it's range. However, I couldn't set the wrench for a lower torque. I actually have enough experience to tighten these by hand and have had more success that way but it's a very difficult concept to show others. 2. As you do the final adjustment with the engine and transmission running, at 20:22 in the video. I find that fluid that is dropping into the pan also manages to drop straight down the drain plug when the valve is open. Therefore, I'm not sure the drain would ever completely stop and there is a risk that you drain away too much. Hence, I drain off the excess until it becomes just a trickle and leave it at that. Cheers, Phil
@leservin4420
@leservin4420 7 ай бұрын
I did the job yesterday and I believe that the top off procedure shown in this video is correct. With regard to my comment about waiting until the drip completely stops, I believe the video is correct because the transmission fluid is sloshing around and it’s clear by observing the flow rate when draining excess when the level is at the top of the plastic plug in the pan. My concern about waiting until there is no fluid at all is that the level would be well below the plastic tube due to the sloshing. Also, the plastic tube to oil pan interface isn’t necessary a perfect seal and could drip some. The fluid isn’t that hot so in my opinion the valve isn’t needed. Know the volume you took out and put that back in plus what the gentleman in the video says. Follow the instructions in the video and simply drain it out when it gets up to temperature.

For about $13 USD, I bought a 2 gallon garden pump sprayer from Harbor Freight. I put in a $2 tire valve so I could use my air compressor instead of pumping. I use the plastic wand, but you could easily adapt it to a hose It holds 25psi easily, and pushes the 2 gallons out in less than a minute I think.
