The character of Shylock is meant to be multi dimensional. Some perceive him as a villain, others as villianised. It depends of your person so please don't have a huge argument. It's like one person likes blue another likes red. Jeez. Personally (having studied the play) I think Shylock is isolated and villainised by the Christians, I mean seriously the acts committed against him are horrible. There is more to the play than the scene so I suggest being educated on it before being crude. :)

I personally think that Portia went quite a bit too far in bringing about 'justice' as she calls it. I feel she should have just let him take the 6000 ducats when he said at last he would take them. No point in making him convert to Christianity. It was really the Christians' fault for the way Shylock acted in the first place if you think about it. If they had treated him well, he wouldn't have felt he need to go and attempt to kill Antonio. That's just what I think.

the actor's portrayal of the characters is commendable. On the play, it is my personal opinion that the court should have allowed Shylock his 6000 ducats for many reasons and not have forced him to convert to christianity. firstly, a religion that was the cause of his hate towards Antonio, would seem a fitting revenge but, Antonio had on many occasions berated the old man's religion as well. If not for anything but out of the christian spirit of respect, Shylock should not have been as disrespected as he was. this is my personal opinion thats all

I understand Shylock's hatred and anger towards Antonio and I'll be honest, I don't care for Antonio so much, but Shylock went too far. The best way he could've gotten revenge on Antonio was by proving that he was the better man and not become what Antonio believed he was. He never should've demanded Antonio's flesh in the first place. It was never worth it.Portia gave several chances of mercy and Shylock only cared about getting revenge. So it's not surprising that this would happen. As strange as it may sound, I actually understand why Jessica did what she did. Her world with her father had no place for her and she wanted to be happy with the man she loved and he loved her, and if she was going to be condemned no matter how she chose to live her life, she'd do it while being happy. Her father was too full of hatred and it was another reason why she left him, even though she still loved him. Times were different then. Things should be thought about and seen through the characters during that time period and try to use their own personal situations with themselves for it to make sense.

In my eyes, Antonio is the lesser of two evils and truth be told, I did want to punch Antonio for he said about Jews. Another harsh reality is that the legal system was rigged and NEVER would've been on any Jew's side at that time. That didn't change until YEARS later. From the beginning, the law was never going to support Shylock. He was so hungry for revenge that he didn't see or understand the reality of the situation until it was too late

Well Shakespeare had written this in the Elizabethan era where he was writing for a Christian audience. If this were to take place today, Portia's explanation as to why Antonio should not die (the whole no jot of blood shall flow thing) would be considered in bad law. It is irrelevant and when the bond says pound of flesh it means the blood, tissues, organs, mitochondria, all are included. As for the second part of your question, back then Venice was not a part of Italy but a free city with its own charter and set of laws, it was Venetian law that is an alien ( foreigner;non-Christian) conspired directly or indirectly against as Venetian's life, then half of all his goods and property would be given to the person he conspired against and half to the privy coffer (treasury ) of the state and whether he will face death or not will be decided only by the duke no matter what others say. Hi Inebuolu: To help you understand the plot (or any of Shakespeare's plots) I'd advise you of this- although the wisdom contained in his writings is often massive, and his use of English is unmatched, his plots are RUBBISH! They were made for Elizabethan audiences, and in those days, writers had to be wary of The Church, the monarch, and well as their wealthy patrons, and their plots were often made with an eye to remaining in the favour of the powerful. The plots are usually unbelievable, pure hokum, but they were a vehicle for the actors and the words. The same is true for opera-- fabulous singing, totally unbelievable plots!

As you urge on justice be assured you shall have justice. Upright judge. Learned judge. If you see the whole production and it's commentary you'll note that Pacino says he'd been asked to play Shylock before but refused because he was afraid the thing would be antiSemetic. But he took this role precisely because it showed how the Catholic church treated them. Here it has nothing to do with race or ethnicity. It has to do with using a strict reading of law to exact personal revenge. Portia gives Shylock an even stricter reading. The law allows not a drop of blood so Shylock gets what he deserves.

People argue and argue about the meaning behind this play. Like with all Shakespeare, and plays in general, it is down to interpretation. The Merchant of Venice is a fundamentally racist play. Remember, at Shakespeare's time many people wouldn't even know what a Jew was - the religion was nowhere near its borders. People need to stop going on and on about who is and isn't the villain. There is no 'perfect' character in the play, all have their massive faults - Shylock has his hate, Antonio his pettiness and Jessica her willingness to condemn another person at the behest of man who may or may not be in love with her. They are all floored but some get more than what they deserved and others, like Antonio and Bassanio, don't. But, again, its just my opinion.
