@harlanginsberg72695 ай бұрын
This is based on an actual event The story is a manager went into an after hours bar and picked up a hot looking girl he danced with her all night but as morning approached he noticed a 5 o'clock shadow on "her" face. Other explanation say it was a roadie or an actual Kinks member but whoever it really was it happened to someone. The Kinks You Really Got Me changed rock history. Their song Waterloo Sunset is ranked number 14 on Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Kinks were very popular among the gay community at the time as they wrote several pro gay songs. For the 1970s the topic of this song was risque a topic to be tackling and this song managed to pull it off wonderfully by never really saying Lola was a gay man and not a woman.

Ray Davies is the genius of this very influential band.
@brucster99b25 ай бұрын
Love it when people react to this song, and watching their faces when they get to the punch line. I'm pretty sure I read that this was a true story involving one of the band's roadies. When the band performed this on "Top Of The Pops", a British T.V. pop show, they had to change the coca-cola to cherry cola due to copyright issues.
@richardscratcher60755 ай бұрын
The change of lyrics was not because of copyright but because it would be seen as advertising Coca Cola, which is not allowed by the BBC. Ray Davies was forced to make a 6,000-mile (9,700 km) round-trip flight from New York to London and back on June 3, 1970, interrupting the band's American tour, to change those words.
@way2deep1005 ай бұрын
Not a copyright issue; Coca Cola would have been delighted. Another comment has already explained that the change was actually because the BBC, a non-commercial TV/radio network, did not permit advertising, product placement or anything which could be construed as promoting a specific brand or commercial enterprise. So I'll add another example of this. When Mott the Hoople's cover of David Bowie's 'All the Young Dudes' became popular, they had to issue a new version with the line: "Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks" (Marks and Sparks being a widely accepted affectionate slang term for popular UK retailer Marks & Spencer) replaced with: "Wendy's stealing clothes from unlocked cars" in order for it to be played on BBC radio stations and on what was the UK's most influential pop music TV show.
@brucster99b25 ай бұрын
@@way2deep100 I get the message guys... my mistake. The Mott situation is interesting, regarding getting airplay. Did they change the lyrics on the 45 release then? Or was there a separate version used just for airplay, and was there actually a physical release?
@alanoakley32425 ай бұрын
@@brucster99b2 I never bought it but whenever I heard it at parties etc. I heard "Marks & Sparks", so it is entirely likely that the BBC were sent copies of the version which complied with their broadcast regulations while the 'genuine' article was in the stores. I'm sure the argument would have gone: "Marks & Sparks is not the store's actual name" but, at the time, a 45's commercial success in the UK was pretty much contingent on the BBC playing it, so artists tended to fall in line even against their better judgement.
@brucster99b25 ай бұрын
@@alanoakley3242 I was thinking the same thing. If you're from the U.K., you'd know what Marks & Sparks is a reference to, but someone in the States would probably be a little perplexed, as not grasping the meaning of it.

I love watching your reactions, this song has been a favourite of mine for well over 50 years. Of course as a 12 year old it took a long while to decipher it, the way the lyrics introduce more and more doubt about Lola as the story unfolds.
