This song is a tribute to his sister who had moved to Australia but came back for his 13th birthday and gave him his first guitar. She went out dancing that night which she loved doing and died on the dance floor.

His sister Rene was 31 years old and living in Canada with an allegedly abusive husband. She visited London just in time for Ray's 13th birthday and she went to the Lyceum Ballroom for a night of dancing (her favorite activity). Due to a bout with rheumatic fever as a child, she had a weak heart and died of a heart attack on the dancefloor that very evening. Ray has said that he wanted to return to the gentler story songs they had done before their phase of arena rock in the late '70 and early '80s.

Ray Davies wrote this for his beloved sister. Such a beautiful tribute. There were such days in England, Europe and the USA.

One of the Kinks later hits in the 80’s. A classic song in tribute to his beloved sister who passed away. Great tune that always takes me back to the early 80’s, which is funny since it in itself is a callback to a much earlier time.

They tore down the roller skating rink when i was like 13. It was the first place i ever held a girl's hand. It was one of those "childhood died" moments.

Hearing this wonderful couples reactions to a song i particularly love and their own reminiscing about their own similar experiences i find so heartwarming. I never truly knew the sad background to the song, because it's such an up tempo ,vibrant piece of work. From the get go you get swept up with it's happy go lucky vibe. It's always , but always a brilliant ,positive experience listening to their interpretations. Life affirming in fact isn't an exaggeration

🇬🇧 This band had hits in the 60's 70's & 80's (this one is from the 80's). Which, btw is great to dance to. 💃🕺🎼🎶🫂

Hi Andrei and Dominika, another great review of a great song. Sir Ray Davies, is a wonderful songwriter and a great social historian. Although he and his brother Dave, founder members of The Kinks, are four or five years older than me and my brother, their experiences parallel ours. His music is very much the soundtrack of our lives, he just expresses it so much better than we could. I also saw your review of Mary Wells, My Guy, I bought this when it came out, if I remember correctly, it was on the Mercury, label with in tiny writing, A Tamla Motown Production. This was the first time I remember seeing those words on a record label, although I bought many more over the years. Your reactions to one-another, over this song said everything about why people love you, because you so obviously love one-another, please don't ever change. Mark from London.

The "pally" is the local term for the Palace. The two brother, of The Kinks Ray and Dave had three sisters -so this is autobiographical. Their north London neighborhood, Mussel Hill, and The Alexandra Palace, a large royal building, with a ballroom, and the BBC set up radio and tv broadcast from their in the 1950's60's. The Aly Pally burned in an accident, in early 89's -since rebuilt. The dancehall Pally we see is in central London, and has been used in a number of films and TV to show the party life of the 1960's.

I'm loving your reactions to The Kinks. Easily the most underrated and underappreciated of all those great UK bands that came out of the 1960's. "Shangri-La" and "Waterloo Sunset" are a couple of genuine masterpieces of theirs from 1969 and 1967 respectively.

The dance club is still in my hometown. I’m in my 60s but I can remember watching the adults getting dressed up to go dancing and all the events. As a young woman I went and having the experience of men asking for my hand to dance. We wore dresses that had movement so you looked better than we were, but the older couples were astoundingly good dancers.

A fantastic song and video from the MTV golden era. I've always thought that the guitar at the start is the guitar his sister gave him. Can't say for sure, but it's a nice thought. ☮🤎🎶

It's so strange that these nostalgic songs from the 80's or 90's, singing about what happened 20 years ago, are now twice that far away in time today. I try not to think about it!

Another great number with a 'Dancing' theme from the Kinks is: "Don't Forget to Dance".. Used to dance to it in the living room with my wife. It's a slower number.... I think it would be great to see you two dance around to a song such as that one! ;-)

Rays tongue in cheek lyrical style was always the kicker for me. Though this song lyrically is upbeat, and happy, the fact it’s a tribute to his sister dying makes it all the more genuine. Sunny Afternoon Dedicated Follower of Fashion Well Respected Man Lola Waterloo Sunset Do them all, do the lyric videos, you’ll see Ray Davies at his lyrical best.

My parents were born in the 30s. I remember my mum and auntie telling me about how they used to sneak out of their bedroom window to go dancing. The building they used to go to was still standing when I was a kid but it was derelict. It was torn down and apartments built on it.
