Rickey was a teen idol from a tv show in 50's , 60's and had some hit songs. Later in the 70's he had another hit with "Garden Party" before he tragically died.

Back in the1950's , when I was a kid ,there was a TV show called " Ozzie and Harriet "about a family who were all a real life family . Ozzie and Harriet Nelson were husband and wife. They had two sons who played themself on the show .The older one , whose name I think was David , was a nerdy looking kid with short brown hair who looked like his dad . . Ricky was the younger brother. He was 5 years older than me and was a young teeneager when I first saw the show . Ricky was very good-looking , an Elvis Presley type . He started making records and became a huge favorite of the teenage girls . We got to see him grow into a rock star on the Ozzie and Harriet Show .

The Ozzie and Harriet show was a staple on TV's across America in the 50's and early 60's. The cast was the Nelson family - Ricky's real dad, mom and older brother - Ozzie, Harriet and David. Ricky was the younger brother and was a teenage heart throb - all the teen age girls loved Ricky. The show launched his singing career and he had a few hit songs.

Ricky Nelson is another star in rock n roll history. He was was a teen idol then successfully transitioned into an adult performer. He tells that story in his original classic song “Garden Party” Also recommend “Lonesome Town” so beautifully sad.

Ricky Nelson got his start singing on a television sitcom named Ozzie and Harriet that was in the late 50s and early 60s. The show focused on the daily lives and adventures of an American family and was basically a comedy. I loved your reaction to this song. The music from this era is really special to me.

Rickie was a teen heart throb in the 50s and cut a number catchy hits. He also starred on his parent's hit 50s TV sitcom "Ozzie and Harriet." Memories, guys, thanks for the memories.👍

This song came out 63 years ago. I have fond memories of watching the weekly Ozzie and Harriet (Nelson) TV show (1952- 1966) and watching Ricky and his brother Dave growing up on the show and in the later years Ricky singing one of his new hit songs at the end of the show. The 50's were the best!

Others mentioned about the TV show "Ozzie and Harriet" but failed to mentioned it was about the Nelson family (his family). It starred his actual Father and Mother (Ozzie and Harriet) and his older brother David. I'm 73 and grew up watching it ALL the time.

Written by Gene Pitney, who had a string of hits in the early '60s, including "Only Love Can Break a Heart," "Town Without Pity," and "It Hurts to Be in Love." Pitney was very popular in the UK and, through his association with Phil Spector, observed some recording sessions with The Rolling Stones in London. In fact, he played piano on a few tracks on The Stones' debut album. Ironically, it was the British Invasion that pretty much knocked him off the Top 40 charts, except for his late 1967 hit, "She's a Heartbreaker."

My favorite Ricky Nelson song is Travelin' Man. It is my understanding that the song was originally written for Sam Cooke, but his manager passed on it. Ricky Nelson wanted it and I'm sure glad he did.

My favorite song when I was 10 years old! And it was exactly like that for my family--my mother turned the radio on in the morning and we had this kind of music as background to breakfast and getting started for the day.

Gene Pitney (you should check him out! ) both sang and wrote music. Much of his music came from personal experiences. Since he wrote this one people asked him who Mary Lou was. He looked a bit embarrassed and said he didn't know... it just rhymed with I love you!

James Burton was Ricky's lead guitar player and laterbecame Elvis lead guitar player. You her him play the solo on tis...he had a slick, slippery style, a certain recoginzable sound, and he could played lot faster notes than in this. He's still around, about 84.

Ricky Nelson was an American singer, musician & actor. From age eight he starred alongside his family in the radio & television series "The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet". In 1957, he began a long & successful career as a popular recording artist. He was considered a teen idol & heart throb. He had so many hits such as "Poor Little Fool", "I'm Walkin'", "A Teenager's Romance", "You're My One & Only Love", "Be-Bop Baby", "Believe What You Say", "I Got A Feeling", "It's Late", "Stood Up", "Waitin' In School", "Just A Little Too Much", "Travelin' Man", "Young World", "Lonesome Town" "Never Be Anyone Else But You", "Sweeter Than You", "It's Up To You", "Teen Age Idol", "Garden Party" etc. Sadly Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1985 at the age of 45.

Contemporary of the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and Bill Haley. Rock and Roll was simpler, based both in the blues and country/folk music. Some stayed in this genre like Nelson and the Everlys, and you see some of that in early Paul Simon. Some moved to more rhythm and blues like Elvis, which later evolved into the Motown sound, and some took rock and roll in a different direction, inventing what we now call the standard progressions and riffs, like Chuck Berry and Little Richard and Bo Diddley. Of course there were variations in the early and mid sixties, with beach music, Detroit and Cleveland rock, and the Philadelphia sound to name a few. There were some wonderful producers who created expansive arrangements, and some great musicians and vocalists, from The Animals to the Association to the Stones, but really it was only a handful of groups and individuals who really expanded the realm of contemporary music. Brian Wilson, the Beatles, Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and a few others paved the way for ELP, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis and the progressive rock of the seventies. But still, knowing where it started to break away from country and blue grass in the fifties is an important background, and listening to songs like this, or The Big Bopper, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley and the Comets, Richie Valens, and others is a great foundation for understanding who influenced the Beatles and The Stones.

His father ,Ozzie, would only let him perform on the Ozzie and Harriet show that was popular back then. Ozzie was a big band leader in the 40s so I think he new the pitfalls of the road and was trying to protect him . Ricky didn't need to tour because he made a ton money selling records.

Something to bear in mind about this great music from the '60s and '70s. It was ONLY popular with young people. I would say that folks 35 and up found most of it very distasteful. Which is crazy, when you think how people of all ages can celebrate it now.
