😔 And sadly he turned his back on the generous God. Gave his life to Satan. He was very open about it. I grew up on Sammy, and it broke my heart to see him preach Satan and hang out with Anton Levay.

You can also tell how much Fred Astaire influenced Sammy. And how much Astaire was influenced by the great black soft-shoe dancers that came before him. The story of dance is the story of influence -- of learning from the teachers and artists who preceded you.

Sammy Davis Jr. was known as "Mr. Entertainment." He always gave you 100% whenever he performed. He was really something special. His father was an actor, dancer and musician too back in the 30's and 40's. He played a bit role in the "Benny Goodman Story" movie.

Sammy Davis Jr. was an American singer, dancer, actor, comedian, film producer & television director. He was also part of the famous "Rat Pack", led by his friend Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop & Peter Lawford. He appeared in many movies, television & performed in Las Vegas. Sammy had some great songs such as "Hey There", "Something’s Gotta Give", "That’s Entertainment", "Me & My Shadow", I've Gotta Be Me", "The Candy Man", "Mr. Bojangles", "Birth Of The Blues" etc.

According to Wikipedia and other sources, this song is not based on the original Bojangles, but someone Jerry Jeff Walker met who used the same nickname . That Bojangles was white. The original Bojangles was not a chronic jailbird, and didn’t own a dog.

Just the history of Sammy is great. He started in Vaudeville as a child and had to wear blackface to preform. I think it was when Frank and Sammy tried to enter a Vegas hotel and they said Sammy had to come in thru the back. Frank said he would not work for them again so they changed the rules.

I am a GenX-er and my generation was blessed to be born in a time when most of the "greats" of entertainment were still alive and doing their thing. Sammy was one. I remember this song as well as "Candy Man" though both came out by him in the early 70's, I do recall seeing him on variety shows singing those songs. He of course was part of the legendary "Rat Pack" . Peter Lawford passed in the early 1980's. Sammy, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, in the 1990's and Joey Bishop, in the late 2000's.

The man who Sammy Davis is singing about is a man who was called Bo Jangles and was best known for his dance routines in movies with Shirley Temple back in the 1930s, his actual name was Bill Robinson born in 1878 and died in 1949 of heart failure. The band "The Nitty Gritty Dirty Band" has a version of this song, which is the one I heard first, the one here with Sammy I remember as well, it was cool to see it again. I had the pleasure and honor of opening for a week for Sam at the Latin Casino in New Jersey in the fall of 1968. He was amazing on so many levels. I was 18 and was a last minute replacement for his regular opening act Hines, Hines And Dad (Gregory & Maurice Hines and their father), referred to him by his fellow Rat Packer and my friend Joey Bishop. This song is indeed about Bill Bojangles Robinson. Although he was the highest paid black entertainer of his time he died penniless and destitute. His funeral was paid for by Ed Sullivan. Evan though he was paid the highest wages for black performers, the money he made was pennies on the dollar compared to his white counterparts. So he really didn't make any money at all . But he was loved by the industry and well respected !!!

@@tonygourdine512 This song is not about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson never spent one second in any jail. This song is about a down and out white man. The song was written by a white man. During that time, white and Black men would not have shared a jail cell in New Orleans, it would have been against the law to put them in the same cell together. Bill "Bojangles" was a highly paid star of stage and film, he was never down and out, nor was he a drunk who would have been in a drunk tank in some local jail. He certainly didn't dance for drinks and tips.

This was a true story about one of the greatest hoofers ( Tap dancers ) of All Time Bill " Bojangles" Robinson. Bojangles was one of the first Black entertainers to make it in show business at first in the vaudeville circuit and then in the movies with his most famous movie being with Shirley Temple ! Sammy was a young man when he met Bojangles with his father and uncle ( the Bill Masten Trio ) during those vaudeville days. Sammy Davis Jr is the greatest entertainers to ever live !!! He was also one of the greatest Hoofers to ever dance as well. He played several instruments including the drums. He was Michael Jackson before Michael Jackson. In fact Michael adored the ground Sammy walked on. Icon is too weak a word for him. A stage General !!!!!

I am proud and lucky enough to be a Golden Key holder to his private grave site in Forest Lawn. In the 60th anniversary special they did for him when he danced with Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson sang a song called Because of You that he wrote just for Sammy about how it was because of him, he was who he was.

Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was a real dancer in the 1930s. He performed in, I think 6 Shirley Temple movies. He taught Shirley Temple to dance. He was the first to dance up and down stairs. He and Shirley Temple (who was an 8 years old at the time) did a dance duet up and down stairs in one movie, I believe The Littlest Colonel 1935. Sammy Davis, Jr. is one of Americas treasures. He could sing, dance, and act. One of the Rat Pack which included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Frank, Sammy and Dean were the best entertainers of the group. The song was written by Jerry Walker in 1965 inspired by the story told to him by a New Orleans street performer who spent time in jail for public intoxication. He met a homeless man who borrowed Bojangles name while in the jail to cover his identity. The actor/dance Bill Bojangles Robinson was a black man. This name borrower was white but also a dancer. The story told in the song is true. This song was significant to Sammy Davis Jr because he had feared becoming like the Bojangles of the song.

Sammy is one of the best ever. If I may make a suggestion on a song performed by Sammy his version of "Old Man River" is incredibly powerful & will get many emotions out of you.

Written by Jerry Jeff Walker, who I saw perform this song in 1969 or 70... but Sammy Davis does the best performance.

Huge talent...singer, dancer, actor, comedian, Sammy did it all. In an interview he said he was the only one-eyed black Jew in show-business. Everyone loved Sammy.

I am 72 years old and used to watch him on TV, he always was one of my favorite entertainers. They used to call him "Mr Entertainer." He always finished his performances with the song "Mr Bojangles!" In case you don:know, the song was about the great entertainer, Bo (William) Jangles Robinson.💞 RIP to the both of them.

He was the best over all performer of the 20th century. Besides singing, he was a fantastic dancer, played many different instruments, could do stand-up, and was a superb actor. He died in 1990.

Little story about Sammy. He was the God father to the girl across the street from me. He would come to see her in North Philly to see her on her birthday. Never missed a year. Never too busy. ❤️❤️ Sammy Davis Jr.

First of all, let me say that I greatly enjoy watching your reactions! I loved watching you two discover KC and the Sunshine Band. That music always makes me want to dance. Now to the subject at hand, Sammy Davis Jr. I was fortunate to see him perform live in Orlando around 1975. It was the greatest performance that I have ever seen. He was absolutely amazing! I've seen a lot of great concerts from Elton John to Dianna Ross to the Doobie Brothers to the Guess Who to Lynyrd Skynyrd to ... Sammy was in a league of his own when it came to command of that stage. I treasure that memory.
