What is really interesting to me , I read an interview with the accompanying pianist for THIS performance. Eva asked him to to do " a little something " in the middle of the song ... he was very nervous as it was UNREHEARSED ! I'd say he did a wonderful little improv. there ... don't you ?! Such musicianship ; BOTH of them !

Over the Rainbow was written by Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg in 1939 for the film The Wizard of OZ. Where Eva excelled was her interpretations of many genres of music. Jazz, folk, country, blues and standards they were all treated to her wonderful artistry.

My mother loved Eva Cassidy and introduced us to her. My mom died of pancreatic cancer in 2003, and she passed with Eva's voice sending her on. At her memorial service we played I Know You By Heart and How Can I Keep From Singing by Eva, both incredible songs. Even after all this time, Eva can bring me to tears. She was truly one of a kind. How she arranged her songs was genius. The emotions she poured into her songs, and her voice...yes, it's as if she opened her heart and welcomed us inside. She has too many beautiful songs to list, but Somewhere Over the Rainbow will take your breath away. If you want to see her blues side, try Blues in the Night, it will blow your headphones off. Love your reactions, thanks so much. ❤

I absolutely LOVE to see your reactions to the enormous talent of Eva Cassidy. Please look up "Fields of Gold" and "Time After Time." On "Autumn Leaves" her pianist, Lenny Williams, said that he was worried that his solo would be, in his words, "painting a moustache on the Mona Lisa." Eva's performances are so incredible because there's no cutting and pasting, no auto-tune, no ego trips or anything of the sort. She was quite simply the most incredible naturally gifted singer of the 20th century,.

"Autumn Leaves" is a beautiful and melancholic song that speaks to the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of change. The lyrics describe the falling leaves of autumn, which symbolize the passing of time and the loss of things that we hold dear.

With Eva, the purity of her voice and her impeccable control is just the beginning. She uses those tools in service of her interpretation of the song, in order to express the feelings of sadness and loss. She sings straight from her heart - in fact she missed out getting a contract with a major label when she refused to sing anything she couldn't connect to emotionally. She said, "I won't sing any of that pop crap." Autumn Leaves is an old jazz standard, often done in an up-tempo swing style. When I first heard Eva sing it I realized I had never before heard the song as it was really meant to be performed. Once you've heard this version, the bouncy cheerful versions sound so empty of feeling. Your reactions caught the important thing perfectly: when you hear her you feel as if you're seeing into her soul. (And it's worth pointing out that just before she went on stage her pianist asked her what key she would be playing it in and she let him know it was a half-tone higher than usual, which meant that that perfect piano interlude was improvised in a key the pianist usually didn't play it in.)

The Wikipedia article titled Autumn Leaves says, "The original lyrics were written by Jacques Prévert in French, and the English lyrics were by Johnny Mercer." Beautiful words sung beautifully by an all time great vocalist. Music by József Kozma, a Hungarian born French composer (1905-1969). The song was released in 1946.

I consider that song by her extra special because, out of all the songs she could have chosen,it was “What a Wonderful World” that Eva chose as the last song she would sing in public at the benefit gathering of friends and family just weeks before she passed away. She was so sick by then that she had to be helped up on stage. I’m sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.💔

You truly truly MUST react to Eva's live performance of Over the Rainbow. While every performance of Eva's is amazing, Over the Rainbow is, in my opinion (and in the opinion of many) to be the ultimate. Perhaps because it is such an iconic and widely-known song, yet she managed to make it entirely her own. Also because she brings a heartbreaking, poignant feeling to it that no other singer has evoked. Here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKPHaYmhqblrrrssi=ZEcHLnOa0rzS13hx

i think you are on the right lines Andre, but i believe its from the opposite view point. this is the only small crowd she performed in front of and her only concert, in January 1996, she had just regained the strength to pursue her singing career, after fighting off skin cancer, albeit still unpopular and struggling. I think the songs she has chosen like fields of gold, over the rainbow, autumn leaves, nightbird etc are all song from a point of view of facing death and loss right in the face, this is her singing for strength and telling those close to her, she's ok with it. subsequently failing to a reoccurrence of cancer in September of 1996 and passed away in November 1996. still relatively unknown, all her 10 million record sales have been posthumous. she truly is a remarkable soul and like most beautiful artists, Van Gogh being another, are never apricated during their lifetimes.
