Extended highlights of the First Division fixture between Wolves and Liverpool at Molineux on 2nd March 1968.
Wolves, under the guidance of manager Ronnie Allen, had gained promotion to the First Division the previous season but had struggled upon their return. By the time Liverpool arrived at Molineux on 2nd March 1968, Wolves hadn't registered a win in eight matches and were a worrying 18th in the league.
For the match against Liverpool, before a Molineux attendance of 33,207, full-back Derek Parkin was making his home debut and would subsequently set the record for the most all-time appearances in a 14 year career for Wolves. In addition to Parkin, manager Ronnie Allen had further set the foundations of the successful Wolves side of the early 1970s through the previous signings of Mike Bailey, Frank Munro and Derek Dougan. Another astute Allen signing, midfielder Kenny Hibbitt, was signed the following season.
Liverpool, who finished 3rd in Division One at the conclusion of the 1967-68 season, included in their team future Wolves captain Emlyn Hughes while Wolves, who ultimately finished a lowly 17th position in the First Division, had in their side the mercurial talent of Peter Knowles. Some eighteen months later, following a match against Nottingham Forest at Molineux on 6th September 1969 and with full England cap beckoning, Knowles sensationally quit football at the age of just 23 to become a Jehovah's Witness.
Originally broadcast by BBC Match of the Day with commentary provided by Kenneth Wolstenholme.

33000, no way. Every stand was full. The North and South Bank were picked. The South Bank held over 30000 then. There were easily between 45000 and 48000 there.

Some seriously tough tackling gives a flavour of what it used to be like.

Myrose - Absolutely - especially Chris Lawlor nearly killing Mike Wagstaffe at about 23.44, with Kenneth Wolstenhome in apparent surprise saying 'that hurt him', and no suggestion of a booking ! Still, in the midst of all the kicking, there's NONE of the 'arms around' stuff which I can't stand in modern football.

My dad told me about watching Peter Knowles, said he was fantastic, would have gone on to be better than John Richards.

Huxley - I reckon your Dad was absolutely right - Peter would have played for England too I think.

He was an immense talent. He had the football world at his feet, but gave it up at 23. What a waste

Great clip, thanks!! Mike Bailey - very underrated player (except, I presume, by Wolves fans) Don't think Tommy Lawrence had one of his better games in a Liverpool shirt here. Only one of these 22 players I don't remember is Woodfield of Wolves.

He was a loyal servant of the club and played 250 games but eventually fell out with the management and moved on to Watford..

Interesting to see Wolves number 8 ,Alun Evans, playing against Liverpool. I thought the only time he played against the Reds prior to becoming aLiverpoll player was in the Anfield game when he waltzed past Yeats to score a brilliant goal. On the basis of that performance Bill Shankley paid a fortune for him ( £100,000 I think.) The dearest teenager in English football at the time.. Sadly he failed to reach any sort of standard and was moved on.

Alun Evans had a lot of problems with his back. Might have had something to do with his not reaching his obvious potential
