Excellent and informative video! From one Creator to another, well done! (I'm watching the entire series) This step has got me spooked a little. I had to replace my gimbal bearing in the summer of 2021. At that time the U-joints were OK, despite being soaked in salt water after the bellows failure that led to the gimbal bearing breakdown. In hindsight, should have replaced them then, as this season a noticeable change happened in the form of some growling vibration when turning or trimming, so off came the leg again for inspection. Bellows and gimbal are OK, no water, but there was gear oil that had got past the gear case and into the bellows. Not much, only down to the add line in the reservoir so maybe a 1/2 quart or less. So I took it apart, got the cross and bearings apart and one of the 8 U-joint bearings was destroyed. The other 7 were still greased and functioning. One of the O-rings that seal the shaft through the gimbal was chewed away, (I assume from the vibration?) the other intact. So upon dis-assembling (with the help of your video), I also noticed that the final part (ring) before the bearing retainer and after the large O-ring was not there from a previous repair prior to my owning the boat. Then watched this video and with the process to assemble needing the special tools (the big retainer wrench and the inch-pound torque wrench) that I don't have (but managed thus far without) are not worth it for me to purchase as a one-off, and I'll book a time at our Marine Mechanic to re-assemble the leg for me. After all that back-story, is there any reason that I would not re-use my bearings, sleeves, gears and shafts if they show no wear, and just replace the oil seal, o-rings, pre-load washer, etc, rather than all new parts as you did?

As I understand it then, with the old style slip fit bearing, all I need to do is replace the washer (and seals, o-ring, etc.) and torque to 80 ft.-lbs? No need to do the rolling torque with precision inch-pounds wrench? Mines an Alpha one, gen 2

@@theinternetelectrician We are happy to help, by referencing your exact serial number service manual, it’s extremely likely that’s 100% spot on…between 80-90ft lbs We went with the new gear and bearing set which required the rolling resistance. 😎👍🧰

We have talked to others that say that equivocates to roughly 70ft pounds however we have not fact checked that. Following your service manual is best. Please keep us posted on your project.

Thanks for watching, by chance do you have your serial number service manual? We don’t want to give you a number that ends up not being right…we haven’t serviced a Gen 2 in awhile however if we remember correctly, it’s the same. It’s best to double check your service manual though. 👍🧰
