Just picked up a 1968 merc 6hp. Guy I bought it from said it runs a bit when he stayed fuel into the carb. So I figured it a fuel issue. Cleaned the carb it's was pretty dirty. I also hooked up a compression tester. Got 60psi on both cylinders. But she runs good after the carb clean. Good spark 60psi compression.and I guess now I also got fuel.

I can tell this is pure fun for you. And I'm glad I found you.I will probably watch every video you have. But there is something I need to say, so I will. The People that watch and follow you are one, boat owners that would love to learn how to save money buy learning how to do something on there own. Or two , mechanics like my self, I'm a Stihl wrench of 20 years who has bought a boat, and realized this is a lot different than a chainsaw.I watched your 4 hp merc video tonight.loved it, EXCEPT when you decided to fast forward thru the carb rebuild and the fuel pump rebuild, to get to the engine start. That engine start is going to thrill you more than it will ever thrill us. We want to know how to get our own personal engine start thrill. I have watched about five videos, you always start at the bottom. end , you show even on different engines the water pump, the seals and the empellar. So Im feeling like this is somthing i can do, im learning. Repatention is how we learn.you have new viewers every day. thats it.

I have same motor from 1973. When doing a run test in a full rain barrel, I open throttle in neutral, and the exhaust is very grey and smokes a lot. When I adjust the low idle speed using the slotted screw above the carb intake, i got it to idle better and not smoke as much at low throttle. Gas:oil is 50:1 mix, using recommended 2 stroke outboard motor oil. Does one need to adjust the high and low timing screws on the cam which the throttle slides along? or does one just live with it burning lots of oil?

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thanks for the tip. I tried it with fresh fuel and it was as smokey as the regular 2 stroke oil I used before. I guess there might be a problem with the piston rings or something else which results in poor combustion.
