You have the patience of a saint when you continue to answer nicely on the 37th question about where you buy your parts from. C'mon people. read the comments, then ask if it isn't already answered! By the way, you probably figured out that the little square bolt that holds down the shift shaft seal is a 13/64ths. Have you ever seen one of these 70's Mercs that runs counter clockwise? My 1972 Merc 40 4 HP does. Impeller vanes have to face the other way.

I have a 1980 Mercury "Gnat" model 40 (4hp). I've had it on the water, it'll fire right up, run solid for about 10 mins then die as if its running out of gas. After two pulls, it'll fire right up and run for another 10 mins then die as if running out of gas. I can repeat this all afternoon. I have a new external tank (yes vent is open), new fuel hoses to the motor, new primer bulb, the carburetor has been removed & rebuilt, all new fuel lines put in. It was suggested to me that the motor may be getting too hot causing the motor to shut down. it spits water, but my next move is to replace the impeller/water pump. also suggested to replace coil. Any ideas as to what may be causing this condition? Maybe the fuel pump? Thanks, BW

It would be an awesome video as so many people have problems with it. My problem is in reverse the sharft is engaging both ways clock wise and ccw. Lower section can fit very tight. Proceed with caution. There are two holes. One at the top and one at the bottom. You pump in from the bottom till it comes out the top.

Choke to kill it.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina thank you so much. I am so glad and grateful I came across your video. I plan on using as a guide to try to extend the life of my little motor. I runs, but last oil change water in the lower oil. I am planning on a replacing gaskets, impeller, and clean carburetor, new plug. do you have any other suggestions. You can't even buy a new 25" small motor right now. Again thank you so much.

Nice video.. I have the same motor.. A bit newer perhaps.. marked 4.5 .. Replaced the leaky fuel line with the factory part and no start.. Gonna take a look for kinks when the weather gets better... Any idea how long you cut that fuel hose? +++

Where do you order your parts and where do you find the part numbers? I just got a Merc 6 hp 1966 and I’m having fuel delivery problems too. I think it’s just the connector to the motor but can’t find where to get a new one?

So much for taking engines to “certified” marine mechanics! Exactly my experience from the past! They couldn’t fix it but I did for $2……..

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina .. also, just helped a buddy with his Suzuki 2.5 four stroke. Not running properly, hard to start, after just paying an engine service center hundreds of dollars to service carburetor. The carburetor was full of crap, the float valve was stuck closed, the idle jets totally plugged, the carb had not been opened! Incredibly, the engine is sold without a fuel filter! It now has an in-line filter! Amazing!

Great video! I know this is a Merc video, but I have a 76 Johnson 9.9 that won’t pump water out of the exhaust relief. I replaced the water pump and thermostat, and the head stays cool. Any suggestions on where to start looking first for any blockages?
@AceCombat68424 жыл бұрын
So if head stays cold I would check the pisser pipe and elbow. Blow some compressed air up it while the motor is running. About 20psi. Spiders and wasps love to build nests in there.

You did a very good job on bringing the motor back to life. I have a motor just like that with fuel problems, having problem getting the fuel pump rebuild kit. Great job you did, do you do it for a living?

Hi my friend from RMD Creations channel, thanks for all the info I'm wondering if we can turn a Johnson 9.9 into a 15 ? Thank you.

If I come across the right parts for the right years I certainly will. 15 hp carbs are hard to come by

You certinally can I turned my 8hp Johnny into a 15 she pures like a pussy cat and certinally noticed the difference but here in aus parts are easier to find I will admit I've paid to have outboard wreckers in other states post me parts if they where hard to find anyways good luck with it

@@64samsky I've done a 9.9 Johnny but it's the same engine as the evinrude but that's for year models 1974 - 1992 if you'd like I can try find my notes an put in detail what I did should still have them in the shed xD you might need to double check with parts you need as you most likely need different parts but the processe should be pretty much the same anyway good luck with it there great little engines when you take care of them
