Mercury 6 on an Underpowered Mac

Cherry Audio's Mercury-6 is a great plugin, but it kept crashing on my 5 year old Mac! Find out why, and what I did to make it work. I LOVE this synth!!!

That's weird, I'm on a base model 2013 i5 imac and never had any issues with the demo. I cant remember if it times out but maybe thats why. But I feel your pain. I hit the CPU ceiling very easily. Other times I can get a good hour session on maschine mk3, maschine2, using multiple instruments, vsts, FX plugins, maschine groups, the lot before it might or might not quit on me. Save, save, save the project throughout. And it's save save save for a better mac for me too. Appreciating the budget perspective. I'm only 2 years into a home studio setup and learning the ropes. I set out to do it as inexpensively as possible without sacrificing too much in the way of quality. These virtual synths get me way closer to the sound of vintage analog synths than I could ever have hoped for, or expected for the outlay of money. My awe is reserved for those who have invested in the vintage hardware, must feel very rewarding to own. But by the same token, I set myself limits because I cant rightly afford to allow myself to fall into a neverending pit of gear acquisition. Or at least, I have enough other things to take care of. I justify my setup further by enjoying its minimalist footprint. A different kind of aesthetically pleasing. Keep sharing your budget finds and thanks for the content.

I think it has to do with the chords that are played and the patch that was used. I could play single note bass lines on it all day. The issue was with big huge patches and me playing 8 note chords leading into other 8 note chords. I ended up buying an M1 Mac Mini for $445 and that solved the problem. :)

For any Reaper fans watching this video in the future, guess what? When I played an 8 voice Big Poly Synth patch on Mercury-6 in Logic Pro, it crashed Logic. When I did the same thing in Reaper, there was no crash. I kept playing for five minutes and then gave up - it wasn't going to crash. I prefer Logic for what I do, but when people say that Reaper is more CPU efficient, they're right. Reaper is also more efficient than MainStage, which isn't a DAW. This same test crashed MainStage.

Follow up - actually, I was able to crash Reaper later. But it doesn't crash as easily as Logic in this scenario.
