I just bought an mx61. And sounds nothing like this video. Is the 88 key version better. Sounding wise ? Im returning the 61
@budgetkeyboardist22 күн бұрын
As far as I know it's the same sound engine with fewer keys. Here's the question: What are you playing the keyboard through? In the video, it's recorded directly into the computer. It sounds different depending on what speakers you play through. The better the speakers, the better it sounds.

You know, you're a little bit all over the place, but I definitely agree with the points in this video. I expected comments on stability, like Logic not crashing when it trips over a 32-bit plugin. It seems like we have a vibrant boutique, 3rd party plugin industry. Should Apple be encouraged to destroy that with their $2.5T? Why not import 3rd party drum kits into drummer? If retro synth doesn't cut it, perhaps throw some business to U-HE (Diva/Hive 2), Synapse Dune etc - or just use your Arturia Collection.
@budgetkeyboardist4 ай бұрын
One, Logic doesn't crash for me. Two, I don't think asking for better synths is a big ask, considering how lacking Retrosynth is. Three... actually, I have no three.
@zargflonk4 ай бұрын
@@budgetkeyboardistNo crashes: You're fortunate. The synth ask is actually huge; 1000's of hours of s/w eng, QA and release management to go from Retro Synth to something like FM8/Hive/Dune. LPX comes with orchestral instruments with a single dynamic layer, basic synths, samplers, drums and extensive effects - it's a phenomenal starter pack. For Apple, it would be enormously more cost effective to acquire one of the 3rd party VST vendors, which might crush other vendors. It is virtually impossible to get funding if your product is deemed to be in competition with FAANG, and what would be the point if Apple bundles such VST's for free. My 2c: Support the boutique 3rd party VSTs - it's worth it to have a vibrant 3rd party VST industry.

I think there is room for both but in some cases software can be better if not more practical than hardware, one example is that I personally use Halion 7 over a Yamaha Motif, Montage or MODX as many of Halion's instrument sounds are based on Motif samples and the other thing I like about software instruments/synths is being able to sequence everything in the box using headphones as there is nearly always audio latancy going through the computer's audio line in. Buying vintage analog hardware synths like a Moog modular, Roland Jupiter, Yamaha CS-80, Yamaha DX7... is definitely out of the question for me because I don't have anywhere to put them but Arturia make really good emulations of these analog classic synths and Dexed sounds really good and proves that even free software synths can sound really good ( do I even really to fritter my money on a Yamaha TX7? No ). I hate it when people act so purist over hardware because that can make me feel pressured into paying over the odds for hardware and also nobody should feel guilty for using freeware plugins or having a tight budget. If I was starting out today I would probably do everything with plugins.

Great review. am considering the MX88 and CK88. Cannot find a side by side review of them together. Both seem equally as good sounding.
@HeathcliffBlair4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the video. A canny selection of both is the best way for me. You don't have to spend a fortune on decent hardware synths these days, and if you catch a sale on Arturia's synth bundle (or any company), you're all set! You could spend considerably less than a grand to get sounds that would have cost hundreds of thousands to produce 25 years ago. Same goes for filmmaking equipment. Amazing times for many artists and their tools right now... provided the rest of the world can keep its shit together. Cheers. 🙂

Reliability of VSTs is on the same level as vintage gear. It's just time. My old VSTs from 2007 doesn't even work anymore (and that's my problem with software, it relies heavily on OS and developer support). If i wanted to have a live show with vintage plugin sound of 2007 i would have no idea how to do it. "Hey anyone do you have old Windows XP laptop?"... You know. But on the road you can always ask a local sound guy "do you have some Yamaha keys in the back?".

I love this take. I mean, I agree and disagree. Yes, I have a 2009 MacBook and it has Reason 5 on it, and it still runs. But no, I wouldn't want to take it on stage - I wouldn't trust my gig to an old computer. OTOH, I don't need old VSTs because there are modern replacements that are superior for the majority of cases. Also, not all old software becomes obsolete. I was using the sampled piano in Logic Pro back in 2005. Now it's almost 20 years later and I still have access to that same piano. But in general, you're right. My Cherry Audio keyboards won't run forever, because the company may eventually fold. But there will likely be better alternatives at that point. But that still proves your point. So yeah, cool take!

Plus, as things stand now - the odd Arturia plug emulation isn't as on-point as some of the others - but every couple of years the emulations get rewritten from the ground up and then the gap shrinks. Hardware sadly is just getting out of reach for many. This last week Korg has made a small digital synth with a 3 octave keyboard with no aftertouch, and it costs almost £1,000!! Seeing as most people use a DAW/computer - software emulations are a no brainer for those with so little space.

On the topic of “bassist” track, why stop there? You would have to type in what cords are being played or what note do you want the bass to play, might as well use that feature for everything. Basically a full-blown backing track arrangement playing like band-in-box for stems of instruments that you’re not that good at playing.
@budgetkeyboardist6 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. What you would need is a track with pitches for the bass to follow... so, like, a keyboard track or a guitar track. Pitch analysis is easy for software. So the software would look at the pitches in the keyboard track and figure out what chords were being played, and then the root of the chord, and generate a bass line. This has probably already been done elsewhere. I think it'd be a neat feature. Whether I'd use it would depend on how good it was.

I did quit Logic to Ableton/Bitwig because of the bugs and bad design decisions in the X version. Logic 9 was fine, X was a dumbed down version.... Here is my features/please fix wishlist: - Cut a region precisely, snap a region precisely ( any other DAW does it, edition is impossible) - Bringing back quicktool with escape (why was this dropped in X?) - Not changing audio in/out automatically when connecting audio cards (I really like loud spikes in my ears) - Having a zoom tool that's actually usable - Bring back the ability to customize color background etc - Allow to change the zoom ration (unusable on small screen) - Stop allowing MIDI notes overlap (no one wants that) - Faster Piano roll edition - Fast plugin search (Ctrl/Cmd + F)

For instance, on STR062 Phase Strings, Assign 1 controls the rate of the phase effect, while Assign 2 controls the magnitude of the phase effect. Check it out! And speaking of Styx, either LD003 or LD004 are great for the "Fooling Yourself" intro, depending on how fat or thin you want the tonality. In fact, "Assign 1" on LD003 really fattens things up.
