I Ran the Hell out of it for 10 years but like an idiot I let it get away. I am looking for another one or a good roller (maybe not quite as rough as yours!!) I didn't have any doubts of the engine being salvageable, it was just a question of how long it sat with moisture inside. Looks like you got to this one in the nick of time! Obviously, the smart thing to do would be to just yank the drivetrain and any other salvageable components, then scrap the burned hulk that was the body. Perhaps if you were ambitious, you could find another Comet with rusted out floors and use this car for donor metal. Yet I'll admit, it'll be really cool to see this car drive under its own power one last time. Looking forward to that video.
@GTSW1FT Жыл бұрын
Why not look at doing a tube chassis and bolting the he old body on to it?
@foxyloon Жыл бұрын
@@GTSW1FT Why? The metallurgy has been compromised to the point that the car will rot away within the span of five years, if that. The only real fix is to cut away the heat damaged metal and replace it outright. Simply welding in a roll cage to drive it around a handful of times before the body fully falls apart would be a wasted effort.

I worked at Hertz rent a car in the 70's. The 70 and 71 Maverick and Comets with 302s were fun cars. (I go there after the Shelby days) Super light weight. Also, the Fairmonts with 302s were peppy. Much lower HP than the early 70s but light cars. That made them fun to drive. Love the videos, Keep them coming!

Hello From Mark In Kentucky. Several years ago, My mother purchased a 1972 Ford Maverick with the 302 2bbl carburetor and with a C4 automatic transmission from our local Ford dealership The car was a bright Canary yellow with a brown vinyl roof and Ford hubcaps that had like a matching Canary yellow area painted on each of the them. That car was an absolute pain to change the spark plugs on as I remember and the front suspension was horrendous to try to keep in proper alignment. I wound up with the Maverick after my mother ran the engine low on coolant in which the engine always had a slight misfire. A friend of mine had a 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle that was pretty awesome until I ran him with the Maverick and whipped him pretty badly. FYI; I wanted to let you know that Reverend David and Ole Man on the KZbin channel @RevStoration had a red and white Mercury Comet that had the 302 with the manual transmission that is probably the same as your car other than the engine being the original 302 like the one in my Maverick. That engine in your Comet ran really well considering what it had been through with all of that heat. I have watched several of your videos and really enjoyed your approach in getting the engines running again. You and Your Dad make an incredible team by the way.
