Hey Son, can’t tell you how much we appreciate these merc vids! Wouldn’t have much of a clue without them. Curious if you have any insight on a weird goose chase we’ve been on with our 1982 90hp tower of power. It’s been nothing but a headache since getting it.. was really hard getting it to start originally but after we got it going it would start somewhat easily. It currently just about dies every-time it’s in gear. Come to find out it was only running on 3 cylinders. We had spark on cyclinders 1,3, and 5. So we replaced the even cylinders switch box with an oem merc one. Weird thing is once we installed it and tested it on the water the boat was doing pretty much the same thing. Dying under load with anything above 2mph roughly. Checked spark again and we only have spark on cylinders 2,4, and 6 now 😑 extremely confused at this point. It also starts surprisingly easy on 3 cylinders now.. Everything is hooked up correctly to my knowledge. Our triggers and stator tested good per your videos and now I’m completely stumped 🫠. Would greatly appreciate any ideas you might have! Thanks Hans

Switchboxes should be both replaced when one goes bad. Also, be sure the bias wires are connected. Also, you should be able see fuel in brass venturis when you prime the bulb for easier starting and idling (tangs need adjusted if you do not see fuel in the venturis). Son

When I did my 78 80 hp L4, the book was so unclear on where to measure the float height. One had to be redone a couple of times because it poured gas out. Too much bounce on the tang. Finally got it.

Do you have a measurement for the correct float height on that carb?
@stevejackson41362 жыл бұрын
11/16” from the base of carb to bottom edge of float. Hold the carb up to eye level and you will note it is horizontal.

I'm trying to revive a 1977 850 4-cyl that has been stored in a barn for 30 years. Your videos have been a huge help; have replaced stator, trigger, rebuilt fuel pump, impeller, replaced crusty engine wiring, cleaned carbs, replaced needle and seat. Engine runs well at medium to high speed, but idles rough, stalls when going into gear, and chugs/surges at ~ 5 mph. Have tried adjusting mixture screws but it hasn't helped (but I can make it worse). Will probably remove carbs again and check if floats are set correctly (per your "bounce" video). And then will try to get ahold of a timing light to check timing (and Link/Sync)...but was wondering if you thought the reeds might be the problem. What are the symptoms of bad reeds and is there a way to tell if it's the problem without disassembling the engine and removing the crank?

Pump the primer bulb and hit the front venturi (brass n in the middle) with compressed air. Fuel should splash into the carb throat from the main. I like to be able to visually see fuel in the venturi just enough not to leak. But it is difficult with these carbs. As far as reeds, put a piece of paper in front of the carb while it's running. It should be pulling air in, not out, and equally on both. Hope this helps. Son

I have these carbs on my 1978/82 Merc 70hp L3. I have a few questions maybe you could help me with: 1) The main jet is .072", does performance improve if I replace with .086" main jets? 2) The surface of the main jet itself is not smooth and shiny, but rough. Do you feel this jet surface not being smooth makes a difference in top speed RPM? 3) The surface of the plastic venturi in both carb throats is rough, like bumpy. How critical do you feel it is to have the venturi smooth, versus rough?

Hey sir First of all, I am one of your fans, and I also have a Marcury engine 2 stroke (80hp), I think it was Manufactured in the 1980’s, It has not been working for more than 25 years due to electrical faults, and I fixed it by my self at home I would have had a problem with the carburettor It sprays the gasoline instead of sucking it in. When I searched for this problem, it became clear to me that there is a part it's called reed vale My question is, is this spare part available for this model of thesis engines ????

How do you sync these carbs? When I have the black plastic shaft linking the two carbs the butterfly valves don't open at exactly the same time. I linked them together and laid them flat on the bench top and the "top" butterfly valve starts opening before the lower does. I don't see anywhere to adjust this. 🤷♂️
@MerCSonL6 Жыл бұрын
It's on the bottom carb to. The black linkage pivots when you loosen the 8mm bolt.

I saw the comment where you told the guy you would do this video for him. Dude you're amazing, love the channel. Son, what do you think of metal needle and metal seat?? Last two carb rebuilds I've done (1981 johnson 60, and 1982 Merc 80) both had metal needle/seats in the kit. Johnson had no leaks or anything, runs awesome, the Merc is currently being built. Just curious about your thoughts on it!

Question here man. my carbs are very similar to my 1984 60hp Merc that I'm rebuilding. my problem is the main jet plug (OEM # 6199) is broke on one (I over tightened and broke the bolt head off). Ebay, Amazon, and all suppliers I've looked into have no longer have that part. what you think I should do as a work around??

@@MerCSonL6 unfortunately, there's no one out there that I've found yet with the exact carb. Think I could get away with just taking the broken part off and plugging the hole with the right size hex nut?

@MerCSonL62 жыл бұрын
Set the floats lower (when upside down). Just a little so it doesn't suffocate the engine. Also, check your fuel pump. Bulb should stay hard due to the positive and negative pressure from the crankcase. Son
