Glad to see a new video, as always I find the information provided very interesting and useful. This video is especially interesting because I now own a BW with three Merc 350 Verados. I think the steering actuators were upgraded but I'll check. Thanks for the video.

You should invest the power box for your van you can plug into the pump side of the driver and one wire comes off with alligator clip to positive then you can turn pump on and off manually with out starting engine makes diagnosing them easy and bleeding them from new a most. That’s if you don’t already have one. I’m sure your shop has one.. your dealership down there you work for has actually been a great help on getting some of the parts mercury had on back order for the steering pumps on a Boston whaler up here in Maryland I work on. Replaced all three actuators last year to new style then the pumps started going bad this year… has all new now hopefully customer will get some enjoyment out of it now.! Great video by the way!
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
Thank you and yes we have one. It actually doesn't work on the new style pumps. You have to bleed them thru the software on G3(Mercury). It is useful when replacing components when you have to bleed the system. Just glad it was a simple fix. 😊

Wow, what a helpful video! The steering system started throwing codes and said to return to port. Even though my Mercs are under warranty I hesitate to take the boat in for warranty service. My boat is in a sling behind the house and it takes two weeks for any warranty service company to have a look and analyze an issue. I have to haul it out and take it to them. After watching the video I decided to swap the two activate harnesses and now I have steering with no codes. Twin 400 L6SC Verados with 15 hours on a Seafox 328 Commander. Now I have to figure out why port engine turns 6650 RPM and the starboard turns 6100 RPM at full throttle. The Merc performance bulletin says i should be around 6800 RPM. I notified the dealer and took it to them and left it for two months, their lead technician said I need to have my props polished. If any one could guide me to some check points regarding engine performance it would be appreciated.

Good thing the actual pump itself didn't fail. Because its not like you can simply buy a new one and replace it like a normal manufacturer would allow you to do. Oh no, not with Mercury. They no longer make this pump version. The "new version" that replaces it has to be retrofitted into the existing system, and of course half of the parts you need to retrofit it are back-ordered.
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
You are correct. They have to be upgraded and it takes a few different new style harnesses. 🤔
@alexbernal49886 ай бұрын
For those with no money to waste. The pump has two thick wires black and red with a fuse. Check for 12v on those. Then the pump has another harness. The one he replaces in this video with 3 wires. Black, purple and white. The purple is +12v and it’s the only one needed to activate the pump. Use a voltimeter or test light to check for power on the purple wire before buying the harness.
@JustinLeeMarine6 ай бұрын
That is correct. Thank you 😊
@raidel88156 ай бұрын
Thank you for this! I checked the purple wire and it doesn’t have any power, I followed it to the engine and no power either, any idea what it could be?
@alexbernal49886 ай бұрын
@@raidel8815 The motor has to be running before you test for 12v at the purple wire. Your name makes me think on a Cuban guy. If you are. Ponle un chucho en la pizarra para alimentar la bomba de steering directo a través del cable morado. . De esta manera si tienes un bajo voltage debido a mala batería o alternador puedes apagar la bomba y llegar a casa.

before i retired this year we replaced about 4 of the new actuators for internal leaks into the rack area,, not bad really , alot better than the 1st gen.

Hello Justin, great video! I have watched a few of your videos and very informative. I have a question…I am considering buying a boat with a new 400R L6. I know Merc has now switched to the V10, but would you recommend the L6 as a new purchase or would you recommend staying away from the L6 and going to the new v10? Curious what your thoughts are on this. Thanks!
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
Thank you and I would not hesitate to buy a new L6 Verado. They are good motors. The V10 is still pretty new and could potentially have some problems to sort out. The Verado has been around a long time and they have sorted out all the beginning issues. 😊

... ... My power steering pump works then it stops, then it works again for a while then stops. Sometimes if I turn the engine off, then restart, it works for a while then stops, then works again. I have not really seen a pattern for it stopping and starting. If you have that part number,I would appreciate it. I am going to search for it now. Thank you, Jeff
@JustinLeeMarine10 ай бұрын
You are going to need to go to a Mercury dealer. There are 4 parts needed to upgrade to the new version C. There is also a parts TSM showing what parts you will need. They should be able to print it.

@@JustinLeeMarine... Are you saying the entire pump needs to be changed because of a possible electrical issue? Change to this? Almost $1000.00 ... Mercury Outboard 8M0199048 Power Steering Pump Gen C STD
@JustinLeeMarine10 ай бұрын
Depending on what the problem is but if it's shutting down randomly it's usually the pump. The first versions were known to overheat and shut down. You can run it and if it shuts down on you check if the lines next to the pump are getting hot. This will tell you it's overheating. If you have to replace it you will have to update it to gen C. The new pumps don't overheat anymore.

@@JustinLeeMarine ... ... 5/13/2024- UPDATE- I replaced the $70.00 (US) short harness. No improvement. I still do not know what the problem is. A week ago it worked fine all day. Friday, 5/10/2024 it worked for most of the day then stopped working. ... I will do your suggestion here, "You can run it and if it shuts down on you check if the lines next to the pump are getting hot. This will tell you it's overheating." Frustrating to say the least. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. Jeff

I know some of my auto mechanic buddies use "all data" on repairs. Is there anything like that in the marine world?
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
I have never heard of it in the marine field. You only get wiring diagrams and manuals from the specific manufacturer. It makes it more difficult because every component is a different brand. The fun of the marine field. If you hear of anything like it I would be interested in checking it out. 😊

Can the new generation steering cylinders be put on older generation engines? My 2016 cylinders need to be replaced.
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
Yes. You can put the new one in for sure. You just need a dealer to program the new ones. It also has to be a joystick boat.

Seems like Mercury engines have more problems than Yamaha.?
@rayjansen6712 Жыл бұрын
Prefer Yamaha....
@JustinLeeMarine Жыл бұрын
I agree with certain applications but Mercury is ahead of all of them now. Yamaha is very good and reliable but Mercury has V12 and V10 motors now that blow away Yamaha in performance and how loud they are. The torque is what you need for boats and Mercury has figured that out.
