Mercury Retrograde: What it Means in Astrology Explained

In episode 276 astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo joins the show to talk about Mercury retrograde and what it means in astrology.
Mercury retrograde periods occur when the planet Mercury begins moving backwards in the zodiac for about three weeks every few months.
Astrologers generally associate Mercury retrograde periods with miscommunication, delays, technological snafus, and other issues in the areas associated with Mercury.
During the course of the show we talk about the significations of Mercury, the astronomy of Mercury retrograde periods, shadow periods, and share some stories about how we have seen these periods manifest in the past.
Astrologers have been talking about Mercury retrograde a lot recently since one is happening in the three weeks leading up to election day in the US on November 3, and it seemed timely to talk about the phenomenon in general, as well as how it might relate to the election.

Bahahaha..... It's all funny and optimistic to me UNTIL Chris says "I know people with mercury station opposition's with uranus at 10 in scorpio (me) 3rd house....and Jessica chimes in on saturn (at 10 in leo) 12th house. 🔥🔥🔥pretty sure it's a "nod" ... Something in Vedic is HUGE with those three now too, activated in 8th house 🌈.... Where my aries sun and Venus hang out too. However. 2019 was pretty bad, I've done alot of my Saturn, with RESPECT and head nodded to Pluto, so I think I'm pretty go with the flow at this point, if the ship flips I'll just relax and float till I reach shore. ... If it seems all that bad I did email Jessica's podcast during the SAD BONER that was this weekend. If my chart is an utter destruction and mess, it will make an interesting topic for her podcast. I will update you if I don't die😆💖other than that my meditations have had some walk ons lately... Lost my laptop in the previous one and phone broke (irrepairable now) in the first one this year sigh Last year, the last Mercury rx had the family who runs the largest bus transit company on the island I live in feud over who manages the company... all bus trips cancelled... now there are court orders for some of the siblings... and part of the company culled off significant parts of their brand

Re: Chiron - it's so weird to me that English speakers have to pronounce things the way we do...because it's a Greek word - Χείρων - and the 'chi' is pronounced more like 'key', but with more of a soft guttural 'ch/h' sound. I got cocky and ordered a laptop a few days before Mercury stationing retrograde, thinking surely it'll arrive before the station. Well it arrived after the station, one of the hard drives wasn't showing up in the system, so I called to let them know, and they told me to email them the issue. I did, but nothing happened for another week, so I called again, and my email had gone into their spam folder. Now after the cazimi the delivery guy picked it up to so they can look at it. I was upset for maybe a whole hour and then just accepted that this is what i signed up for by being unpatient and ordering when I did. Great episode, I wasn't familiar with Jessica, she's really fun and I learned a lot!

Yayyy!!! I might be wrong with this but Jessica is the only guest who's opened her greeting with an acknowledgement of Chris' staggeringly prolific output with TAP... which is only proper. I'm finishing 4 languishing essays during this Mercury Rx transit through my 6th, so I'm really enjoying this - inasmuch as it's possible to "enjoy" this slog through the backlog. At the beginning of this Rx I had weird trouble with passwords and warped speeds of communication (not just things slowing down but some things sped up to the point of hastiness, increasing missed signals).

Fun is having a natal Mercury retrograde in the 12th trying to figure out what that means with stated tabloid/sensational astrology. Having that in conjunction with Saturn, I’m the friend you talk to for several hours not saying much and then have a 15 page essay response the next day. Mercury retrogrades don’t personally effect me and are sometimes backwards. With the later part of the episode, I do wonder how much the Neptune pisces mixed with a Mercury retrograde impacted these specific retrogrades because there’s been so much emphasis on gaslighting during the pisces transit where part of being gaslit isn’t knowing you were where there’s an insane amount of confusion where no one knows what’s fact or fiction. This period in history is going to be so much fun to sort through. 😆 I’ve been watching The Leftovers every weekend (took a slight break because season 1 is so draining) and it’s SOOOO much like now it’s weird. I’ve been sorting through these episodes getting ready for a great reset where I’ll own nothing and like it… no, I’m introspective on the post Pluto 4th transit and how to properly/happily redirect energy creatively. With the UN paranoid great reset thing; it’s amusing because I’ve read it and have seen conspiracy theorists read it and didn’t find that to be the context. I thought about just looking up charts with a Mercury R in 12th ruler, but figured it was a waste of time so I’m looking at astrologers charts on these episodes to see how they interact with my own chart to pinpoint narrowed down interpretations. So far the only thing of note is Tarnas may have a nodal conjunction/opposition possibly out of sign which may be why she seems familiar. Zig zagging nodes, but I have noticed just by impact of music it flips to the Pisces south. I have an out of balance chart towards the west where there’s more emphasis on the north node so pulling to the south in the 7th is very noticeable. Delerium and frontline assembly are the same band, just yin/yang. The node pull example is.. front line assembly - Neologic Spasm (north) to Delerium - Just A Dream. Pretty much the same song but completely different. I’m curious with the planet episodes if the energy felt is a chart dynamic by guest. Why not experiment. I have no idea what nodal reversal would even mean, but I’m not surprised because pisces is in my 7th and I’m coming across a lot of random people with nodal connections; all related to astrology. I think Maynard James Keenan is a Mercury retrograde and he has that infamously weird vocal delivery and hardcore fans due to being introspective. Forgotten comment: costar app trouble with spirituality is mostly Neptune square Neptune which is actually interesting because of the opposition to MC. Last, the merc conjunct Saturn is probably why I prefer these shows because it takes astrology seriously instead of falling into new age-isms. Was a fun episode

I'm the therapist and analyzer for everyone in my life. My Mercury & Sun are in different signs & houses so I can have a hard time being understood when verbalizing thoughts, but Venus is in ♒ with Mercury in the other side of my MC, I'm really good at expressing myself through writing, and with my hands and face (and through arts). Mercury is square Jupiter & Mars in my 12 house near AC. I actually have some severe physical medical conditions that are taking their hold in my 30s, and I have a VERY real fear that my Venus&Mercury 9th house Aquarius, esp with the very mental Gem rising Virgo moon & Mars square, that one day in the future I'll rely on technology completely to be able to communicate and to exist in the physical world. Um...like Stephen Hawking...try not to think about that, but this brain does what it wants🤷🏼‍♀️😮‍💨

The story about the car purchase made me wonder if I bought mine during Mercury retrograde, so I had to look it up. Yep, sure did, lol. Mercury was retrograde from 08-26 November 2012. I bought a car on 16 November, but the whole thing was kind of screwy. The dealership called me a week plus later saying that they could no longer finance me because my credit had disappeared, and I needed to return the car. Turns out that because my car had been paid off for so long, and I had no credit cards or anything else, my credit had reset due to the lack of activity. It was there when they checked my credit that first day but disappeared before financing could go through. I ended up actually being really thankful that happened because I had been regretting the purchase, and I ended up buying a car on 26 November (literally the same hour or so Mercury went direct) that was way cheaper, way better interest, and way more loaded. Edit: Hilariously, I just looked it up, and I was in a 5th house profection year -- which is Gemini. Also, fun fact -- my other Mercury-ruled house is the 8th (loans!). Go Mercury!

This Mercury retrograde has been lovely for me so far: within the last twenty-four hours I received inheritance money and was newly enrolled, unexpectedly, as a beneficiary of government funds from a country I previously lived and worked in. My natal moon is in Leo at 3 degrees and in the 8th house so squared by both Mercury and Uranus in Taurus. My natal Venus is in Libra.

I am wondering, although you are talking about transits - I have Mercury Rx in 3rd Leo in my natal chart, therefore does that mean my life will be full of these frustrations? I must admit although I think I communicate clearly with my siblings, close friends I sometimes feel I am speaking a different language! As a child I struggled with Dyslexia too although I am fine now. During this Rx I have experienced tec problems, delays with communications. My mercury retrograde of note in association with houses. My Amazon delivery was delivered incorrectly, so I had to request a refund, which was granted by Amazon. Then the seller asked for a reason, which meant the seller was now out of their payment. Mercury was in my 8th house in Scorpio opposing Uranus in my 2nd house in Leo.

I'm questioning this because my moms husband has a natal Mercury retrograde and she thinks he's immune but he bought a new bicycle with a motor right in the shadow period (natal Mercury in Scorpio in the 5th right around the degree it went rx) of the retrograde and guess what? As I predicted, it broke down and the motor doesn't work. 😑 so his 5th house new hobby transportation idea broke. He's certainly not immune it seems. He definitely has issues with expressing himself any time of the year... 🤣 one of the most passive aggressive people I ever met.

Wow! A client who I recently did a reading for asked if I knew about Jessica Lanyadoo and I didn't, but obviously I do now. I'll have to watch more of this later on. I have to agree with Chris about the relationship between the close proximity of Mercury and the Sun. Mercury does seem to be the go between when it comes to the way the energies of the Sun and Mercury communicate. I feel the same holds true with the relationship between the Sun and Moon. I’m a Mercury in Taurus at 0 degrees and square Aquarius Mars and I never shut up! I’m also Aquarius moon square sun and I have Uranus conjunct my Libra ASC, so I totally get Aquarius/uranian energy. @@Geinrendour What degree is your Mercury? Do you find that your Taurus Mercury gives you a memory like an Elephant? My friends think I’m a freak. I remember what people were wearing, on dates/times/places etc which occurred 30 plus years ago. I remember minute details, just like it happened an hour ago. However, when it comes to learning something, it takes a while for the penny to drop! I can’t follow instructions in terms of how to build something and if I read instructions, I read the first few lines and last few lines and then wonder why I don’t get it. I struggle to keep up with my mind as it feels like it’s on Speed. My mind never switches off and I’m constantly trying to catch up on what is going on in my head. I think that is the Aries influence with my Mercury at 0 Taurus degrees. I type extremely fast too. I’ve tried to meditate but I just can’t empty my mind. It drives me insane at times. Xx

@@louisebrookes6713 My Taurus Mercury is at 21 degrees. Funny that you mention elephant memory. I have memories of myself as a baby looking stuff up from my cradle and lots of very early memories but I have an awful short memory for names, for example. I learn from readings, but it's hard to. Mostly I'm good and I actual learn things by somewhat practising it, which I find very Taurus Mercury. Also, although it varies, I am good by learning through hearing. Like with a class, for example. I am very good attention to details, however. Details are sort of everything for me in general and on my work. I don't know if that is my MC on Virgo (ruled by Taurus Mercury conjunct my Taurus Venus) or perhaps I get lucky seeing and connection things up because I have a Virgo Jupiter.

What could happen, a few decades from now, when us old folks have traveled to the Bardo states? Will our children be able to READ the actual Declaration of Independence? Will they depend on 'officials' translating ideals to digital? I treasure Project Hindsight, and those passionate scholars who toiled to bring lost wisdom to light. One question I would appreciate an answer to, is this.... Why does Mercury RX always bite my arse... badly!? I honestly do not get it! As I say, my Natal mercury is in my Taurus 8th. Mercury rules my empty 9th Gemini and my 12th Virgo. My Pluto is at 27 Virgo and trine my 8th Taurus Saturn/sun conjunction! I just don’t get why Mercury RX is always such an arsehole to me! I’d say anything touching Mercury in 8th could be affecting Sun/Saturn. (They’re all in Taurus you wrote). And anything in Scorpio is opposing your Taurus house planets. And if you were born at night then your Saturn and Sun are out of sect and can have a heavier hand. What planets are in the 5th and 11th house? If any planets there then they are squaring. Try approaching it like Chris- have patience, don’t be in a rush, give yourself extra time to do things during those times. And always double check things (especially emails and texts before you send them to the wrong person). Ha ha ! PS- I have Aquarius moon too and I love it!! It’s conjunct my Mercury (out of sign so in Hellenistic astrology, might not count). It’s part of what makes us interesting. 😁

@@tinareynolds2938 Hi Tina, I’m a day chart. In my Aquarius 5th, I have Mars (out of sect) at 6 Aquarius square my 0 degree Mercury in my 8th Taurus house. I have my 5th Aquarius Moon at 23 degrees and square my Taurus Saturn/Sun conjunction at 25 & 26 Taurus. I don’t have any planets in Scorpio. Maybe it’s that out of sect Natal Mars squaring my mercury which is the problem. But surely It should be more to do with which sign/house T Mercury is travelling through, which would have an affect? 🤔

@Louise - Yes! You probably know more Astrology than me for sure. I just wondered if the past few retrogrades have been hitting things that touched your 8th house somehow. like February’s was in Aquarius so it squares your 8th house planets by whole sign aspects. and June 19th was in Gemini so that hit Mercury as it’s the ruler of Gemini. Depending on where your Venus is, maybe this Libra one (and into Scorpio) could have an affect. Ironically, I have Mercury at 0° too and it sextiles my Mars! Maybe that’s why we want to take action by talking. But mine is also square Neptune in 12th house so I don’t even know what that is. Ha ha. I’m really just learning all of this so I don’t know. I have Pluto at 26° Were in the same generation. I think we’re sort of lucky that the Capricorn cluster is at least trining our natal Pluto. Hopefully...hang in there. Mercury is your friend - even when it seems like he/she isn’t! 😆

Language is the bridge between us--words and the structure they're placed in are the way that we are able to communicate what's inside our heads (and even process it, hence why researchers are interested in the way people who speak different languages also think differently, thus communicate differently, etc.). Mercury is exactly this.

Uh. Not all young astrologers agree with astrology meme culture and simplification of astrology. I love the traditional form of astrology. The way its truly meant to be learned, understood and taught. I wish and hope to find an experienced teacher that is well grounded in astrology. I also love to mix astrology with biblical accounts and spirituality. I have a lot of hard aspects in my chart, barely any positive ones with a mercury rx in natal and Saturn overtakes my chart... And this is a sign to me that i have a lot to learn and im being pushed to do so.
