The Red Balloon (French: Le Ballon rouge) is a 1956 fantasy short film directed by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse.[1]
The thirty-four minute short, which follows the adventures of a young boy who one day finds a sentient, mute, red balloon, was filmed in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris, France.
It won numerous awards, including an Oscar for Lamorisse for writing the best original screenplay in 1956 and the Palme d'Or for short films at Cannes. The film also became popular with children and educators.
Lamorisse used his children as actors in the film. His son, Pascal Lamorisse, plays Pascal in the main role, and his daughter Sabine portrays a little girl.

I always loved this song. Now that I see it with this video, it kind of gets to me in a different way. My mom died after battling poor health for a long time. At her funeral, I had bought some balloons to let go at her service. They had been in my car for awhile and when I let em' go, they all sank, except the one I got with a smiley face. I watched the balloon til it was so high I couldn't see it anymore. And the smiley face never turned away. Beautiful song.

Definitely by far and away the most underrated band since time began.The best gift I ever received was in 1998 when my son introduced me to the magic that is Mercury Rev.

For me that title would go to the band The Church but I definitely agree that Mercury Rev was brilliant and vastly unappreciated, unacknowledged and underrated. As I understand it part of the problem is they had a consistent reputation with falling apart during live performances largely due in fact to the singer's propensity for getting drunk on stage consistently. And if you are unfamiliar with or only know of a couple songs by The Church I would full heartedly recommend you check out a variety of their work as each album tends to have a feel of it's own. One of the things that makes them stick out is how they cover a wide range of songs and music styles from Pink Floyd like psychedelic rock to slower even ballad or nursery like rock songs to straight up rock tunes. This song and video was a favorite of my friend Jill Simonsen. I couldn't help but notice the strange and eerie coincidence that this video was posted on the same date that she died, March 10, 2011. And her work often featured balloons floating in this way. RIP Jill

This song brings so out so many emotions when i first heard it. It makes me feel like a kid and feeling free. It brings up memories of my mom and how she comforted me and my siblings when we fell in life but was always there to pick us up. It also makes me feel sad that she is no longer with us but as song ramps up, it leaves me with great memories of my life with a awesome mom. I miss you every day mom. shaxan I don't recall now. But it was an interview where he was talking about new groups and someone asked him what he thought of modern music. he was sort of saying that the good stuff isn't mainstream anymore you have to sort of look for it.

yep, I remember him saying that, but don't actually recall any band names being uttered. anyway, it's quite pertinent, i think that David Bowie would take notice of such band as Mercury Rev. I googled and found out that in 2001 Bowie had a live chat with the members of Mercury Rev through the BowieNet web site. There are several places on the web that one can read a transcript of that chat.

Acabo el día con un tema descubierto este mismo año, y eso que es de 1998. Aunque conozco a este grupo de palabra apenas había escuchado unos pocos temas en mi vida. Lo de "Holes" me dejó flipado y además sucedió en KZbin, lo que me impactó sobremanera gracias a las imágenes de "Le ballon rouge", película francesa de 1956 cuyos comentarios (en inglés) en el propio enlace que seguidamente comparto ayudan a situarla. Me quedé flipado, pues la conexión entre la selección de imágenes junto a este tema de Mercury Rev es fantástica. Ciertamente la canción me maravilló, la clave para incluirla en esta lista, pero debo decir (por una vez en mi selección) que las imágenes son fundamentales, magníficas y preciosas, con esa estética genial y real de hace más de medio siglo.
