Melissa and Don't Break the Oath albums are easily amongst the most ripped off (and of course influential) albums in metal history. If you don't believe, go ask Metallica. And don't be fooled by the sound in the albums, it might straight off sound like typical heavy metal but they're referred to as being one of the earliest black metal bands along with Celtic Frost (let's add Hellhammer too) and Venom, mostly due to the lyrical themes in their songs. In a sense yes, this song (Evil) put the real evil in metal when it came out back in 1983.

Funny story about Hellhammer. My friend and I met "Tom G Warrior" at a Celtic Frost show in Portland, OR around 1985 (the show was them, Running wild and Voivod) and he was a REALLY nice guy and chatted with us for about a half hour. As we were talking some dude came up and said "You guys are great, you sound a lot like this other band I really like called Hellhammer!" When the guy said that Tom turned to Gary and I with a big grin and said "Hellhammer? Who the hell is Hellhammer??" the guy said, oh dude, I didn't mean anything and disappeared.. Lol! it was a good laugh since the guy didn't know that Hellhammer was Tom's previous band.

Back in Mercyful Fate days 81-84 they were pretty Much THE Metal band highly satanic lyrics for the Time and King himself was very active Within Anton Laveys Church of satan, their lyrics was for the Time so satanic that they clearly fell Into The genre 1st wave Black Metal/Heavy Metal mostly in retrospect musically there was very accomplished musicians playing their own brand Of straight up Heavy Metal in Those early days we had Heavy Metal and Speed Metal even Than Thrash was Born it didn’t say Thrash bands but speed Metal bands, genres wasn’t the jungle of subgenres and sub sub genres of today. The album name actually comes from the name of a human skull, which King Diamond acquired somehow back then and it was said, that it belonged to a witch named Melissa, who was burned alive. I saw the King back in 2014 and at the end of one song he went straight into this and the place went completely mental. Afterwards he just looked at the audience, hung his head low for a second, and went "You're not going to let me get away with playing only ONE Mercyful Fate song are you?" To which we all collectively shouted "NO!" And he went into Come To The Sabbath. Come To The Sabbath and The Lady In Black are my two favorite Fate songs and either is my recommendation.

My favorite tune of theirs, I think. That first verse truly epitomizes dark metal: I was born in the cemetery Under the sign of the moon Raised from my grave, by the dead. And I was made a mercenary Oh in the legions of Hell And now I'm king of pain, I'm insane! It took me a while to come around to King Diamond fandom, his singing specifically, but musically he's always crafted solid heavy metal.

@ The Adventures Of TNT: When you want to "start" with MERCYFUL FATE, then take the songs "Doomed By The Living Dead" or "A Corpse Without Soul" from the EP (1982).The first album "Melissa" (she was a fictive witch, so it is not the name of a former girlfriend) came out in 1983. Yes, "Evil" is on this album, but if you ask me, this track does not belong to the great songs of "Melissa". I prefer "Into The Coven", "Satan's Fall" and "Curse Of The Pharaohs". Their best album in my opinion is "Don't Break The Oath" (1984) with superior songs like "Come To The Sabbath", "Welcome Princess Of Hell", "The Oath", "A Dangerous Meeting" and "Gypsy". Btw., "Abigail" is also not a name of a former girlfriend. Abigail was a real person. She was the mother of a girl, which (the girl) died on July 7, 1777.

Mercyful Fate was one of the pioneers of progressive metal, and King himself was heavily influenced by bands like Rush, Thin Lizzy, BOC, Uriah Heep, in addition to Alice Cooper and Judas Priest. Interestingly, the opening riff to "Satan's Fall," also on the Melissa album, was lifted from Scorpions' "Polar Nights," found on that band's record, "Virgin Killer" (released in 1976) as sort of an Easter egg.

Nice vid man. A couple of notes... About Rob Halford taking possible influence from King Diamond, its definitely the other way around because you can hear Rob's falsetto on Judas Priest songs like "dreamer deceiver" and "Victim of Changes" which are from '76 while Mercyful Fate started in the early 80's. and Judas Priest has in general been a huge influence on Mercyful Fate's sound which you could hear more once you get more acquainted with both bands. Also Melissa comes from the name of a real human skull king had (tho idk the full story with that or with the name Abigail) And I would reccomend going chronologically from Mercyful Fate to King Diamond as the best route

This was a brain melting hybrid of new wave of British heavy metal style riffing, mixed with way more Progressive elements and extended musicality. Mercyful Fate worthy act to beat in terms of advanced musicianship in the metal genre brother. At least within the underground metal scene anyway. You can hear in the production that it's not quite metal yet in so much as it is got a hard rock kind of sound to the guitars they had not really figured out the super crunch yet. That transition comes with Metallica and Kill em All. Really one of the first times the super over driven palm-muted guitar crunch. They were still struggling here from an engineering standpoint with diamonds voice here. There is a lot of layers of Reverb And Delay etcetera etcetera that kind of make it sound murky, but it does have a overall vibe to it that is pretty damn spooky. This is considered Proto Black Metal by the way, largely because of the predominance of occult and satanic lyrics. I'm sure someone else's probably touched on this already in the comments, but Halford proceeded King Diamond and was an influence on diamond.

Rob halford has been singing in a falsetto voice since the 70’s. Mercyful Fate we’re highly influenced by 70’s era Judas Priest. 6:20 Rob sang like that since 73/74 but used it occasionally then. since 76 he used it more often and sang more raw in 79-83 period but still sang very high. later he sang more high up continiously like he did in 76-79. Check Judas priest - SInner, exciter, victem of changes, dissident aggressor, screaming for vengeance, deceiver, devils child ect. all before 1983. Other great songs: A Dangerous Meeting, Witches Dance (there's an official video), The Bell Witch, Egypt (those two are from their 90ies comeback album). Oooooh, early Mercyful Fate! BOLD move for the uninitiated! I listened to them since 1984, and never really grasped the lyrics so was unaware what King was saying in most songs, lol. Then I got hold of the lyrics (thanks internet), and let's just say I got a little shook, haha. Some pretty DARK stuff! And I had already been listening to it for several years, lol. I sorted it that while King is a self-proclaimed "Satanist", his beliefs/views are more in reference to the philosophy put forth by Anton Szandor LaVey, and King does NOT engage in any of the insidious black mass blood sacrifice stuff that he sings about on the early MF albums. That's my resolve, that's how I reconcile everything, please don't pull at those threads. :-) All that aside, enjoy the KD/MF odyssey!

That was (and still is) an awsome LP. Classic heavy metal with a twist. But I find it ridiculous to call it Black Metal ... because this is theatre with "horror music" in the spirit of Black Sabbath (although much more contemporary "NWOBHM" sounding). Black Metal is something else. A more naked approach to the barbed wire of life. Whereas King Diamond is the Phantom of the Opera. Closer to Power Metal than Black Metal (and I feel quite confident that he himself will agree).
