For those who don't know Melissa is a fictional character created by Mercyful Fate. She is a central figure in the band's debut album *Melissa* (1983). In the album's narrative, Melissa is portrayed as a young woman who was condemned and executed as a witch, and her spirit plays a significant role in several of the songs. In the title track, "Melissa," the band's vocalist, King Diamond, expresses grief and sorrow over her death, suggesting a deep emotional connection between the narrator and Melissa. The album's lyrics are filled with dark themes, including witchcraft and the supernatural, and Melissa's character embodies these elements. Melissa is a recurring theme in Mercyful Fate's music, and her tragic story adds to the band's mystique and eerie atmosphere.

@Manectric7 I have been a King Diamond/Mercyful Fate fan since I was a teenager and I am 35 now. And both his solo stuff and his stuff with MF are definitely Black Metal. KD/MF are definitely the bands that struck the mold for the whole "Black Metal" scene. I think you are absolutely right in your assesment of them!! =)

Mercyful Fate are considered to be part of the first wave of black metal which doesn't really make them black metal it really means that they influenced the later black metal bands other first wave black metal bands are venom, hellhammer, and Celtic frost

@WingDiamond yeah, but the lyrics are absolutely black metal... I haven't heard any power metal bands who don't speak about good and evil, love and justice... Mercyful fate's lyrics are a lot... darker to be called a power/classic metal band, same goes for king diamond ... that's just my opinion, I might be wrong

Look at the guitar work, Hank Shermann was the power force behind Mercyful Fate. I know that Metallica and King remained good friends for years, and years but Hank in my opinion is a far more skilled guitarist than Kirk. Kirk is blazing fast but I think kirk patterned alot of his stuff after Hank. Great video none the less. thanks for the up.

No , it's old black metal, not norwegian-panzerfaust-artillery, if that's what you got in mind. People from the early hour like me, remember 82/83 and MF's tracks being aired on BBC R1, on Friday nights by the late Tommy Vance. That sound WAS early classic (and melodic, if you wish...) Black Metal. I hate strict genre definitions probably as much as you do, but just because Hank Shermann's guitar licks were beautiful and the King's vocal pitches high, I ain't gonna start calling it Power wtf...

I wouldn't necessarily call KD/MF "Black Metal". Mercyful Fate is more classic/power metal and King Diamond (band) is melodic speed/thrash.
