Who was ready for a falsetto screaming undertaker with a bone cross microphone? You guys were. You've been screaming yourselves for King Diamond, specifically "Sleepless Nights". I, on the other hand, was not. What a fascinating experience you set me up for, one that chilled me to my bones. Thank you!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to King Diamond for the very first time, performing "Sleepless Nights” Live at the Fillmore.

King Diamond's voice is better than ever, I would say that he hasn't sounded this good since the first era of Mercyful Fate. I remember that even in "Abigail in Concert" album his voice didn't sound with this power and clarity. In some interview I heard that after he had to have heart surgery, he also had to quit smoking, which undoubtedly affected his voice in an evident way.

It's very hard for some people to get behind King Diamond because it seems like its all over the place for most people.. but if you understand that 96% of his albums are portrayed as stories and he uses all his ranges to enact to the characters then people would have a much better understanding and appreciation for his talent. And yes, Andy LaRoche (sorry if spelled wrong) is one of the best classical guitarist in the metal industry. If you did enjoy listening to him, I would HIGHLY recommend listening to the entire "Them" Album.

King Diamond puts on a phenomenal stage show. I saw him on his Fatal Portrait tour in Long Beach California in 1986. The moshpit turned into a riot and they cancelled the show after 45 minutes of his set. One of 3 opening acts was Exodus. I was tripping on LSD. (No more of that foolishness, my mind expanded enough). My friends and I drove 666 miles in 11 hours (seriously) to get there and the car broke down when we got there. We blew through Vegas at about 120 mph about midnight. The only concert I've seen that even approached his theatrical greatness was Alice Cooper 2 years later. Good times.

Diamond Bangers Assemble! The King is finally here! YASSSSSS! I can expire happy now. Blessed with a multitude of voices, timbres, dynamics, shadings, The Insane Dane is Horror Metal personified. He may draw from Alice Cooper, but his heart is Uriah Heep's David Byron (who he named his son after). I draw so much vocal inspiration from this man, it's not funny. Reinforced head voice? A defining leader. "Pretty" head voice (like here and also on "A Visit From the Dead" off of Conspiracy )? You got it. Rough baritone vocal? Check. Growls? Oh yeah. Gurgles, shrieks, bellows, caterwauls? All concert long. Adore, adore, adore. He's been singing these for decades, he was 59 years old here, surviving a triple bypass operation and a herniated disc before that. They are so ingrained in his brain, vocal tract and muscle memory, he could probably sing them with laryngitis. Let's not forget the band; they smoke on the entirety of Songs From the Dead's video, whose production and mixing is basically unparalleled in the King Diamond canon. You can hear everything with clarity, even King's wife Livia, who has accompanied as background layering since, man, '03? In the mid-to-late 80s, King was on fire, creating classics with Mercyful Fate and then his own band, one after another. If you play the entirety of this concert, you will end with the entirety of the Abigail album, played as close to perfection as possible. King is meticulous with his writing, arrangements and production, true state-of-the-art gothic metal, and Abigail stands as one of the three best offerings metal ever produced, any performer, any year, any sub-genre, along with Entombed's Left Hand Path, and whatever you think is best. My faves? Black Horsemen, The Family Ghost, A Mansion In Darkness, Arrival, Melissa (Mercyful Fate), A Visit From the Dead. If this appeals to you, check out albums Abigail, Conspiracy, Them, Fatal Portrait, The Eye, The Puppet Master.

Loved The King since 1982. Gigged with him a couple times, and saw him live a few more. Ever since he left Mercyful Fate & went solo, most all of his LPs are tales written like novels, most of which are inspired by Edgar Allen Poe. And he acts out the tales on stage. A sight to behold. HIs studio works are even more amazing. His voice is like an instrument, overdubbing notes like 4 times in harmony. I never expected one thing: In person he's so damn short.

From heaviness, to dynamics, darkness, beauty, ballads, an art form. The riffs, vocals, melodies, harmonies, orchestral elements, and overall great song structures with purpose and a chorus. Absolutely, Nevermore would be great for this channel. This Godless Endeavor is my personal favorite, and I think C.B.F. would be perfect for a vocal review. Sadly I couldn't find a good live performance.

Agreed, 100% but go back to Sanctuary for his real power. He started to (sadly) drop off with Nevermore (but was still an amazing talent)

I am so fascinated to see your take on King Diamond. While it can be argued that he does not have a great voice in the classic sense, if you want to talk about being uniquely expressive and owning an original sound, he does that like, well, a King! A career spanning nearly five decades, multiple classic albums to his name, able to put on a killer show at the age of 60 after triple bypass surgery; if RJD is metal's Freddie Mercury, then King Diamond is metal's Vincent Price. Let every night be Halloween, the witches Eye will shine Let Amon still belong to them and Missy's feeling fine Let Abigail rise once again, let Grandma's teapot sing The Black Horsemen ride . . . Long Live The King

I would agree that his vocal expression is quite entrancing, though his falsetto is not for everyone.

@@TheCharismaticVoice I love his work. I think it's the atmosphere. It's like a musical updating of 50's and 60's pulp horror. As always, much respect for your open-mindedness; it never stops being amazing.

Yeah, sure. King is one of that singers, who are 100% recognizable whatever they are singing.

You can't do just one song. You have to do an album. I choose "Them". The story telling is awesome and their albums link together

When you dig deeper you'll learn that King is truly telling a story. He's performing like an audiobook... he does the voices for all the characters, thus the falsetto, the growls, the clean notes, the dirty. He's like the best storytelling/stageshow musicians (Alice Cooper?) but on steroids. And the guys he has playing instruments are always some of the most talented in metal. I used to tell everyone, "once you get past the voice, the music is awesome!" King Diamond still is as good today as back in Mercyful Fate.

The spiders lullabye album was my introduction to King at 13-14. I immediately fell in love with the aesthetics, particularly the harpsichord/cembalo intros. Criminally underrated.

A fun fact about King. He actually started out as a guitarist, but started singing in the second band he was in called Black Rose. He never had a lesson at all, but he picked it up quickly.
