I was at their first American Tour, for don’t break the oath, in San Antonio, Texas. They were supposed to open for Exciter and Motörhead but they were mobbed at the Mall in an Autograph Session. Exciter HAD to open..and they were pissed!!! Mercyful Fate was second and then Motörhead!!.,,,1983🤘🤘🤘

From what I remember, an old friend commented on King's vocals which he said could hit the sixth or eighth octave. And they better not put King or Fate into the R&RHOF. That place is horrendous. How dare King be alongside singers and bands that are included but not a single rock song. Never put King Diamond/Merciful Fate under the same roof with people like Michael Jackson, Madonna, even rap artists.

You should probably check out Relentless by the band Pentagram for more heavy hitting riffs like this. Pentagram is an American cross between Mercyful fate and Black Sabbath. But they have been around almost just as long as Sabbath!

I got turned on to this album by a friend back in 1984. It's still my favorite Mercyful Fate album. I used to like putting this on when I was driving and I remember when my son was little, he was in the back in his car seat kicking his feet and laughing. What really makes Mercyful Fate stand out is their unrivalled musicianship! I.e very many of their solo's is not over-dubbed, but rather each guitarist plucking the same notes, Beautiful, haunting, and it has that eerie darkness that i later understood was "the black metal feeling" 😊

Melissa is the debut studio album by Danish heavy metal band Mercyful Fate, released on this day 10/30/83. It was the first album released by Roadrunner Records. This was also the first Mercyful Fate effort to get an official release in the United States through Megaforce Records, as the self-titled EP was a highly sought after import, and the BBC sessions were only available on bootleg tapes. Melissa has been identified as one of the earliest examples of extreme metal, and is often considered to be a major influence on the then-developing thrash metal, black metal and death metal genres.

My problem with this is that they needed to spend more time working out the songs. Better arrangements, more time to fine-tune the leads, to determine how King should sing each part (he has like 5 different voices), etc. The sound quality could have been better too. With that said, it's still one of the best metal albums ever released. I also really like In The Shadows, and consider it a perfect album.

I completely agree. Don't break the Oath is exceptional as well, but Melissa just has the edge. I like the production on Melissa better, as well. Oath is more metallic & treble heavy, Melissa is slightly warmer.
