I was starting college fresh out of school in 86 as a punk, but on hearing Fatal Portrait on a mate's Walkman on the bus to college one morning I changed direction in an instant - I was an INSTANT King Diamond (and Mercyful Mate soon after) fan and I've never looked back. Andy LaRocque was THE reason for me to ditch keys and synths and try my hand at guitar, and that's where I stuck my guns to for all the years that intervened, until I suffered a number of strokes in 2013. But every now and then I blast this out and pick up my Jem or VMNT and try to join in, and it doesn't matter if I fuck up occasionally anymore, I just loved to hear this EPIC album one more time,and love to know the love for King Diamond is still going strong out there. FYI, The Family Ghost and The Black Horseman were always my favourites to play 😊

I listen to Metal since 1988 when i was a little boy but i somehow missed King Diamond. As a Thrash-Teenager his singing always sounded too opera like for me back then. And now since last November 2022 almost 35 years later i tried it again. Man.... it blew me away like a tornado !! On the one hand i'm a little embarrassed that it took me so long to recognize this unique quality on the other hand i'm glad to have discovered it after all. With the predominantly mediocre stuff that's been released nowadays, it has something for itseelf to rediscover such a top-class metal "brand new". I feel like I've struck on gold \m/

Me too, but I was listening to this in 1989 to 1990 my senior year (I am 52 years old now) when it was new. I remember when I first heard this stuff; blew my socks off. Then I went on the deep dark (evil) rabbit hole after this man's work. I found Mercyful Fate and Black Rose and Brats. Then I got to listen to his voice before it was prefected to complete bliss to my ears. With Andy on guitar and King's voice, I was in my own world; just like today. I just finished playing along to Abigil on this anniversry of the album. Still take me back to that special place in my heart and mind. My friend Joe opened me up to Iron Madien, Motorhead, Danzig, Slayer, King Diamond, Manowar, etc.. I was an AC/DC fan through and through; but this ..... I just don't have words for it. It is the reason I still keep going; Spirits in Black till the end.....

One of the greatest metal "concept" albums in the history of music. Around the age of 24 I remember playing nearly this entire album with a bunch of other musicians from New York. Of course, we had no singer. Those who said they could do it usually just did some horrible falsetto that sounded more like Edith Bunker than King, but it was still just as fun because all these riffs and beats are great!! And it still holds up today, just like all great music..
@SavageAudits2 жыл бұрын
Wow! You guys learned all of these arrangements? Impressive!
@stevenj27172 жыл бұрын
It was tough! Especially at 24. I was lucky because the other guitarist, drummer and bassist were quite good and we worked closely together to try to figure everything out as correct as possible. There were a couple of solos we didn't play note for note, but it was all close enough that nobody ever noticed. I think my most favorite song to play was "the black horsemen" with that beautiful twelve string intro, and that riff behind when king sings "The pain of labor was so strong that Miriam died! Her final seeing was a pair of yellow eyes!" And also the two guitars behind "Now we're finally alone, Miriam. Abigail is here to stay..." Great utilization of two guitarists. Great orchestration. Great vocal and guitar harmonies. It still holds up all these years later.. And it was a fantastic learning experience for me. I know some people don't care for his voice but it's heavy metal horror opera!! And I think kings voice couldn't be more perfect for what they were creating. I can't hear anyone else singing these tracks, just like I can't imagine anyone but Geddy singing for Rush.

Uno de los mejores discos de la historia, es tremendo de principio a fin, y el mejor disco de King Diamond en toda su carrera contando Mercyful Fate

I remember waiting for this to come out, it came out 2 days before my 19th birthday. I can still recall that first listening and being blown away. it was a huge step up from Fatal Portrait. The guitar playing is amazing and the story went full album, and KD was in his prime! What a time to be alive!

Or just doesn't like it. It's too bombastic and reverb drenched for my taste. It's the reason I don't really like Iron Maiden. I didn't dislike it because I'm sure it's well made but it's not everyone's thing.

Them/Conspiracy as they are the same story for me. But Abigail is almost as brilliant. King Diamond never made a subpar album in his entire career be it with Mercyful Fate or King Diamond. The 90s and 2000s albums are excellent as well. I LOVE Time and House of God.

My step daughter named her daughter Abigail three months into her pregnancy. The kid never made it. She had to deliver her dead. We all had a funeral at the hospital. The staff at the hospital was more than charitable and even a few of the nurses cried. I cant imagine what its like to carry your dead child inside you or the grief she felt having done so. Fucked up. Every time I play this album for a brief moment I wonder if her spirit is with her mom.

This was my first taste of King Diamond. They used to have metal shows at this club "Pulse" every couple weeks in the summer. SO I would go to every one. Had never heard of King DIamnd. Was totally blown away with the show. Got a pick from Andy(managed to get one from him on Them and COnsipiracy as well). Hooked ever since.

Mercyful Fate and King Diamond made the most complex heavy metal back in those days. This album is insanely good and very progressive in my perception. The work of the guitars and drums is top notch and the bass is present the majority of the time. At the first listen I didn't comprehend this album that well, but with a few more listens it did grow in me.
