Merkur 37C Slant Safety Razor: The Perfect Shave for Sensitive Skin?

The Merkur 37C slant safety razor is similar to the Merkur 34C HD but there is a difference in aggression with there being a slant or bent to it. The blade gap is greater on one end of this safety razor making it slice through hair easier. A slant safety razor makes it more aggressive on your skin and some people think it's better for sensitive skin? In my opinion, I don't think so. I think there are better mild razors for sensitive skin, like the Leaf shave twig or Henson AL-13 safety razors. Even the Merkur 34c is mild on your face. Thanks for sharing! It's definitely a step up from a Merkur 34C. I have a hard time detailing with it around my nose and lips. One end is very aggressive and the other is mild. On a more flat surface where I'm not detailing, it definitely is one good razor.

I have sensitive skin and I've often heard that slant razors are better for sensitive skin. I bought a RazoRock German Slant 37, but it was a big disappointment: it irritated my skin with any blade and nicked myself with even the most gentle strokes. I gave it to a friend for whom even the Gillette Fusion 5 is too aggressive (he gets rashes even with a brand new cartridge), to see if he has better luck. A few days later he happily told me "Dude, this is the best razor I've ever tried!". No nicks, no cuts, no irritation, even though the guy is a novice DE shaver and has really bad skin. So I feel like we can't make a general statement that this or that razor/blade/cream is the best for a particular job, because there can be huge differences between two faces.

I had a similar experience with the Rex Konsul Slant. I put it down for a while because of all the blood loss. I will pick it up again and try some new blades and see if I can get it to work for me.

I will push back on one thing: I have very sensitive skin, and the Rockwell 6C has been incredible. Several shaves in and no issues whatsoever. Also, Stefanski has to put up next season. Full offseason with Deshaun and a new, and hopefully better, DC. Next season is a watershed for us. Go Browns!

Just my experience, the Gillette Nacet just doesn’t cut it ( no pun intended). Right now my 2 go to blades are Gillette Super Thins and Wilkinson Sword Classic (Germany not Gillette). I only have 4 razors and these blades pair awesome with all of them. You could say I’m having the time (shave) of my life. Thanks for your contribution to the shave community 💈

I'm a head shaver new to double edge. I like what you said about the twig. I think I'm going to try that. Bought a van der hagen but used it twice and went back to cartridge. Very sensitive skin here.

Hey man , if nothing else helps , try cold water head shave. I have very sensitive skin and also shaving my head daily and was having real problems with razor bumps but after everything failed i tried cold shave (basically the opposite of what people usually do when they try to open pores with warm water and make hair more soft) go as cold as you can endure so you close your pores and stiffen your hair. I know it sounds wrong but it's worth to try if nothing else helps. Razor goes little bit slower since hair is stiffer but end result is great , as long as you can endure cold water on your head. I have coarse facial hair and quite sensitive skin, and own a 37C and Henson AL13. For me, the AL13 is my primary driver, and the 37C is for “heavy lifting” roles. I use the 37C for stubble that is too heavy for the AL13 to effectively cut through. I make the first pass with the 37C, and then use the AL13 for secondary passes. This method works well for me, but otherwise, the 37C is much too aggressive to be a daily driver on my skin. For reference, I use Astra Superior Platinums, Gillette Platinums, and Gillette Permasharps.

I found the Parker semi-slant to be aggressive enough for me. It just takes some experience to get acquainted with its use. I use Feather blades in my Parker semi-slant. Nice close clean shave as long as I am not in a hurry.

I'm not sure how you are getting nicks with this razor. I have used this razor for over a year and it is one of my top tier razors. It is one of the most smooth and efficient razors for my sensitive skin. I love most of my slants like the Rex Konsul and IKON X3. The Rex Konsul is expensive, but it is the most well made adjustable razor. In my book the Merkur 37c is a champ.

I just read your post, and the funny thing is, I just realized the other day how vital foam thickness is to achieving a great shave. For the longest time, I was under the impression that a more watery foam would reduce the blad friction and produce a better shave. Boy was I wrong! A thick shaving foam creates a nice cushion for the blade to drive through. Live, learn, and pass it on!

NIce vid, which blade did you use? I like slants, have many , but maybe this is the "gold standard"? I got my first scalp "biopsy" with it w a Gillette green blade....1/2x1/2".....bled a lot. It was my fault, I pressed and I have a small bump in the skull there. Have used maybe once or twice since then for the head....., face is just fine. I still wonder if slants are any better..... I doubt it....

Gillette Nacet blade. The 37c is more aggressive than the 34C. They are two different razors, and quite frankly, I don't see a advantage using a slant razor.

No it’s not. The top cap is twisted so there is always a very aggressive side of the razor that you have No control over. Major flaw in a slant razor. Which doesn’t detail well around your month. When I have a goatee, it doesn’t bother me at all but detailing around your lips is terrifying. Extra careful the 37C. It does have a great price point. Pick one up, if you don’t like it return it. 👍 keep us posted

I was a rockwell user but I don't know, just didn't do it for me. Switched to the merkur 37c with a perma sharp and never went back. I have super sensitive skin, so I look for a one pass shave that is super efficient and the merkur 37c with a perma sharp is just the perfect combo for me

It's actually the way the razor is designed. Light gap and blade exposure are two separate things. The design of the Razor is a key factor when determining blade feel.

I think a lot has to do with the soap as well as the razor. I cannot have the same shave out of Arko Hydrate which is a silicated cream - a very difference experience than pure soap such as Tabac.

I got really disappointed with duller blades like Personna, Wilkinson and Gillette Nacet after sticking exclusively to Feathers, Kai and Muehle for several months on my Muehle Rocca de razor. I guess it is easier to shave with duller blades, but it doesn't slide as effortlessly. Regarding this slant (i have 39C), I think that I am doing something wrong when going against the grain (angle). I cut myself way too often on the neck when attempting the baby-smooth shave with it.

I agree. Lots of people think Gillette Nacet blades are sharp. For me, there mild plus for sharpness. As for this Slant, it didn’t skip on my neck where a 34c with a Nacet skips all over my face. I won’t use it anymore in the Merkur 34c because it’s doesn’t work well for my skin and hair type. Thanks for sharing 👍

Personna Med Prep/Lab Blue are sharper than Mühle blades and Kai. Feathers are only the sharpest on the first shave after that they drop extremely fast. So that's really weird. Wilkinson also has several blades and with the Gillette Wilkinson Sword China ones being the sharpest they have a quite wide range.

The Merkur 37c has too much blade exposure to be good for sensitive skin. There are better slants for this purpose like the Parker Semislant. But it is good for thick hair, always gave me a really close shave that lasted for the longest time. But with my sensitive skin and thick hair I had always problems with him, even though the R41 gives me the best shaves 🤷🏼‍♂️ Just one tip that helped me a lot. You need a lather that is a lot more moist. The water will be absorbed by your hair and they will cut a lot easier, much more glide and protection. It helped my shaves and skin then anything else, besides maybe to moisturize my face more often. A video on KZbin helped me a lot. If I find it I'll drop the link under this comment.
