I was a teenager. Merle is one of the greats that you just thought we would have forever - and like many of the others - Johnny, George, Conway, all the way back to Hank - the music he, and they, made will endure forever. RIP Merle.

I have been a fan of Merle's for over 30 years and I had never heard that story about this song. No one could write that song or sing it the way he did if they had not lived it. Thanks for sharing the story.

He's even mentioned in an old Statler Brothers song " Put a cry in your voice like Haggard " and I believe that it was " Nobody wants to be country, They want to go pop " .

Love this song, Merle was an absolute classic. I was planning to see Merle live, I was going to buy a former co-worker (and now really good friend) a high school graduation gift of a ticket for him and myself to catch Merle live. Unfortunately, Merle passed and the concert was obviously cancelled. But it would have definitely been a concert worth catching, just on his legend alone.

I heard someone react to Merle's songs and he made the comment that of course the "people back in the studio" could tweak the sound and make it better and that sort of makes me want to bang my head against the wall because it is not giving the credit to some of these great singers like Haggard and Jones and many other "old" country music singers that they deserve. They were not good because of tweaking in the studio or because of autotune. They were great because they had great voices to start with and then they practiced and practiced and practiced and practiced. I live in Nashville and 15 or so years ago I was lucky enough to get to see Merle live at the Ryman Auditorium and his songs sounded EXACTLY like they did on his records because he was just that good! I would love to tell everyone who is reacting to his songs, PLEASE do not lessen his talent by thinking his sound is because of some electronic enhancement....it wasn't!

A few months ago, I came across “ The Grapes Of Wrath “ on audiobook on KZbin. Read a lot of books, but that one is so finely spoken, blew me away. It’s about refugees from the Dust Bowl who lost their farms in the Depression and went to California. Steinbeck was witness to a lot of it. I saw a little clip where Merle said the government camps were not as Steinbeck portrayed them. He was not amused, not at all. I wish Merle had written an autobiography. I’d love to learn the story of his life. Thanks for posting this.

There is a later version of this song by Don Williams that is very good. He didnt change the song. & he never did time or anything but his sound really fits well with this song. Ok here is a suggestion of a song I just happend to stumble across the other day that I had to send to all my freinds. Some of them probly hate me for forcing my music on them, but I'm ok with that. Johny Cash "The devils right hand".

Hmm just a thought I had while listening, do you think he sang him the song referenced in the second verse with the choir? I think when he was asked to sing, he remembered that event and knew that that certain song held fond memories for his friend, and sang it as a special gift. IDK if that's what happened, I was just thinking about the lyrics

Beautiful, timeless, sometimes words alone just can't do the job. How to describe something valid as both both a universal emotion or a deeply personal experience? Grateful Dead used to cover this tune a long time ago. Achingly soulful. Kind of like Death Don't Have No Mercy. Melancholy, yet undeniably beautiful gut punch.
