I agree. And tbh, I actually think if Merlin did trust her more and Morgana knew who Merlin was, they could have potentially allied with Morgause. Morgause might have still been the show's antagonist because she (justifiably) believed Uther must die for magic users to be safe and Merlin would always be against that. However, if Morgana was on Merlin's side about that, I think it's possible Morgause could also have been turned good due to her love for her sister.

I can't bring myself to hate Morgana for what she did... There was no one she could trust, no one would tell her the truth, but her sister. It was an easy path for Morgana to turn to dark magic. She saw no other option. Merlin was wrong to listen to Gaius, he should've been honest with Morgana from the start. 😥

The sad part is that Morgana was the one who never should have trusted him. Merlin really didn't ever actually trust her. Not enough to confide in her even when he knew she had magic too. Not enough to help her with her own magic. And not even to speak to her (instead of trying to just murder her) during the attempt on Uther's life in season 2's finale.

Indeed. I cried the first time watching Morgana being poisoned. It was so wrong!! Not to mention that he never told Morgana he had magic too. Morgana would have seen him going through as a loyal servant to Arthur. She would attempt to do the same and probably just wait for Uther’s death. In the episode where Merlin tried to prevent Morgana killing Uther, Morgana still has chance to be good, when she kinda forgiven Uther and decided not to kill him. Makes me wonder how do the great sorcerer decides on others’ fate. Even the druid boy who came to Camelot to kill Uther, name Gilli or something, Merlin showed his power. He even seek Kilgharrah’s help in either to prevent it happen, or no. And surprisingly, Kilgharrah did not decide this for Merlin and things turned out well. It was the Kilgharrah who is so destiny this and destiny that, he said to Merlin that Morgana can never be trusted. It seems so logical how Morgana became so hateful towards his father, which then led to her hating Arthur too. She has literally no one who tell her they have magic, and she sees innocent people being executed day by day. Gaius lied to her and give sleeping potions which never helped. Merlin said he understands Morgana and that he can be trusted, but he never told anything to her and even poisoned her. In the end, Merlin knows that Morgana has turned out so evil is due to him. He said something like “I’m sorry for what you’ve become. This has to end now”. He knows at that point, Morgana is suffering and beyond help. But anyways...it seems like Merlin thought of it this way. “If this is the only way to have Arthur as the greatest king and to see the rise of Albion, then I’m up for it”. But don’t you think that most of the decisions he made never affected him as much as the other people themselves? Sad, sad indeed.

Thing is about Merlin is that this is the character who keeps killing those committing treason behind the back of the king. He doesnt wait for trial and executes people with the excuse of self-defense and “good of the future kingdom”. I love mergana but merlin’s already such a shady character ever since he killed edwin muirden.

I am sick to death of everyone always holding Merlin accountable but never Morgana?!? She is not completely blameless, whatever pain and trauma she suffered she still thought It was fine to do the same to others, it was "good" that women and children were dying because of her. But no. Morgana's a "completely innocent" "victim" who was "made to" chose to kill hundreds of innocent people multiple times over. Seriously? She didn't say "no" when Alvar would "strike down all who serve Uther" no one made her attack Gwen and why did Arthur deserve to be killed all of a sudden when he was only ever a brother to her? And as for Morgause? Morgana is not stupid. She lives in a medieval kingdom at war, she might not have known she'd be the source of a sleeping enchantment but "prepared to bring about his downfall" means casualties who are not Uther. Merlin made a choice, but she'd made hers first.

It's not that people are blind to Morgana's actions later in the show but that she was treated poorly by Merlin and Gaius when she was still completely innocent. The poisoning was disproportionate and Gaius comments that she had chosen her gifts for evil, were utterly out of place. She had not chosen to use magic at all and it was never clear she knew what she was doing at all beyond plotting Uther's death. When Morgana interacted with Alvar she DID express concern that others would be harmed in deposing Uther but his answer was correct. Uther had to be overthrown in order to secure safety for those with magic. Morgana was not privy to what the viewer saw of Alvar in being ruthless. I don't even know why the writers themselves thought to paint Alvar and in turn magic as always, always bad because Merlin was allegedly supposed to be bringing it back to Albion. How was that ever going to happen when we were continuously bombarded with users of magic who never did good? In the case of Morgause and the sleeping spell Morgana was a pawn. In the episode, she is seen as distressed and genuinely confused by what is happening around her. Blame the writers for never giving Morgana agency. At no time does she actively do something against anybody but Uther and she's not really given the chance to choose much more than some allegiance with zero details of what she agreed to. Merlin on the other hand is seen to actively choose to poison her because the dragon says so and without finding any other way or telling her what he knows or attempting another solution. Merlin only sees the small picture when it comes to Uther. He thinks only of Arthur and not the countless deaths Uther has and will take. It was the same in regards to Gwen's father's death. Merlin saved Uther because Gwen said it wouldn't bring her father back but what about other people's fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers? Morgana recalls that Gorlois (her father as far as she knew at that point) died because of Uther, she has seen Uther kill many, and she sees the bigger picture that Uther will continue to kill innocents. After the poisoning though the writers give no reasons for the things you wonder about - why did Morgana go after Arthur? Gwen? The writers do not answer, they did not give the character motivation. It leaves it open to interpretation that Morgause manipulated her for a year or even put a spell on her or any other number of possible reasons including that she was just evil all along. Or perhaps she hated Merlin after the poisoning and everyone he loved because she felt so betrayed. The sympathy towards Morgana is frustration really that the writers do a poor job of her transformation and motivations. Merlin's motivations are flimsy in comparison to any other time he is faced with murdering someone innocent. People can not help but feel sympathy for a character that demonstrated more courage for justice and more goodness than Gwen or Arthur up until that point, BUT who was left all alone and then betrayed by the only person in a position to help her! Her later actions shouldn't be excused but they are forever connected to at least three times when Merlin might have helped her take a different path by revealing his magic to her (or at least telling her of the Albion prophecy and making her believe in Arthur)

@@Miluielle And let's just say that if it had been the other way around and Merlin had been the one who wasn't helped by Gaius and made that choice to help Morgausse 'without realising what he was really doing?' Let's say that Morgana ended up poisoning him to save the kingdom, would he have come back the way that she did? Answer is No. Because he would have changed his mind when he saw the people being hurt and try to stop it. Even after all he had been through. Because when I comes down to it, Morgana chose to become who she is and yes, part of that was from the pain of not having anyone and from being 'betrayed'. It does not justify it. I'm not saying that Merlin's decisions didn't contribute to her becoming evil. But it was ultimately what she chose to be. Here's the hypothetical scenario that no one ever seems to think about: Merlin tells Morgana in season 2 that he has magic. Morgausse shows up. Alvar shows up. Morgana is still overcome by her (justifiable) anger towards Uther, and when Merlin tries to reason with her that it's not worth hurting others, she responds with "how many of our kind have they allowed to die?" Morgana STILL makes her choice. Merlin poisons her before the Knights of medir kill Arthur and then Uther and then the kingdom falls into chaos and civil war and everyone starves or gets killed by contenders for the throne, invading armies, etc... Magic is back in the realm but never accepted or welcomed by any normal people who still fear it and blame it. They're just overlords or pariahs (We all know Morgause doesn't care about the common people at all, she only wants her own power, she won't help anyone with it) So after Morgana comes back, she tells Morgause of the threat that Merlin, "a traitor to his kind" is to their trying to kill the Pendragon's he serves and they kill him. Albion = Dead. And None of you have got any proof that that isn't EXACTLY what would have happened if Merlin had told and trusted Morgana. Because no one forced her to go about her cause in entirely the wrong way. You do not gain acceptance by killing people.

PREACH! I still do NOT know what was so bad about Morgause's plan in season 2. It literally was made so that ONLY Uther would be killed or otherwise harmed in the plot to kill Uther. She literally did a whole sleep spell so that no one else would get in the way/have to be taken out.
