Embark on a fascinating journey as we look into the latest archaeological discoveries that are shedding new light on the legendary figure of Merlin in the Scottish Borders. Known mostly as the wise and powerful advisor to King Arthur, recent excavations in the village of Drumelzier reveal a much darker and more complex portrayal of Merlin, painting him not as the grand sorcerer of legend but as a tragic figure imprisoned by a local ruler and ultimately meeting a gruesome end. Could this remote Scottish village be the true resting place of Merlin?
In this video, we explore the incredible findings from the Tinnis Fort excavation, which dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries-the very time period Merlin is believed to have lived. The team from GUARD Archaeology has unearthed fascinating evidence, including a burial-like feature near the supposed site of Merlin’s grave and artifacts from ancient hillforts that suggest the area was a significant seat of power in those centuries. The nearby Thirlestane Barrows also reveal elite burials, offering further context to this compelling story.
With each new discovery, the connection between Merlin and this historic landscape grows stronger, though more research is still needed to fully unravel the truth. Could the legends of Merlin have originated right here in Drumelzier, evolving over the centuries from local folklore into the epic tales we know today? Watch to learn about the ongoing research, the intricate ties between history and legend, and what might lie ahead in the quest to uncover the real story behind one of history’s most enigmatic and enduring figures.

So basically, nothing to do with Merlin. At least tells us what the archaeologists are actually looking for that would be more interesting.

Not at all, this indicates a hill fort with the burial of a man of high status who may have been a wandering Druid , or imprisoned sorcerer of some reputation . The story spreads and is enlarged into myth. Merlin in the Arthurian was “ imprisoned by nymowe’ “ This Merlin may likewise have found a similar emotional connection with and imprisonment. We will never know until the resurrection. In any case it gives me hope of having conversation with him in the future . 😊

Good text, well summarized, good contextualized, but the clickbaith is unnecessary- just state what was found, wgat archeologists assume at this stage, and may be relate to Merlin at the end with a question mark. Facts so far: an fort from ~ 6th BC abd two skeletons from nobles, thats little- what artefacts have been found with them? What can be concluded from this? Etc. Thank you.

A Merlin or Myrridin, was also, as I understand it, a druidic title for a wandering Druid or a druid with a specific mission.

I’m British and I know the legend well but it remains just that - a legend. Historians cannot confirm there ever was a “King Arthur”. If he was alive then he probably led the fight against Saxon invaders but every bit of King Arthur’s court and existence was destroyed by the Saxons if that was the case. It’s still a legend but legends have a habit of having some cornels of truth in them. Who knows maybe it is but then may be not. Arthurian legends will have been embellished as well over the thousands of years it’s been told.

Mythical not fictional. Fiction is made up stories that may be drawn from real life. Myth is real life told in oral rails till very changed from the real story and sometimes added to other mythical stories Johnny Appleseed is a good example in America today

Nobody would love to believe that Merlin existed more than me, but let's be real here, Merlin like, Lancelot, Guinevere, and King Arthur, were fictional characters who symbolized specific roles and heroic archetypes based mostly from mythology. Heck most scholars attribute Merlin to a modern incarnation of the Norse God Odin, the All-Father. This is just like the nonsense that occurs every few years when some clueless knucklehead believes that they have found the remains of Noah's Ark. There was no Noah's Ark, the story of Noah was created by the first Hebrews who came from Babylon and retold an ancient Babylonian story that was already about 8,000 years old when the Old Testament was written. Noah was a character that was invented to be a modern retelling of that disaster story so it could be absorbed and integrated into the Hebrew religion.

@@scottmccloud9029 You are completely delusional if you think that Noah’s Ark ever existed. Like I already stated the legend of Noah’s Ark is 100% based on the real legend of the actual flood that occurred between 6,000 and 8,000 years prior to the first Hebrews who were originally from Babylon and brought with them their legends and incorporated them into the Old Testament. Anything you need to attach a belief to you can guarantee is false. The truth never requires any belief.

Merlin (Welsh: Myrddin, Cornish: Merdhyn, Breton: Merzhin). NOT an Alban but a Briton!! Oh, and he is a mythical character: Merlin is a composite of earlier Welsh tales of Myrddin and Ambrosius, two legendary Briton prophets. He (Merlin) was created by the 12th-century Welsh pseudo-historical author Geoffrey of Monmouth.

Don't know what you intend for this channel. If you want to be serious about archeology the you should link your sources in your description. In this case it looks like you are lifting your information from the Medievalists website or the GUARD website, so if you use what you find there without attribution then that is plagiarism.

It's pronounced like " mirthin withd " , not " murdin wilt " . Myrddin was changed to Merlin by later writers because they thought Continental readers would use the ( wrong ) " murdin " pronunciation , which was too reminiscent of the French " merde " .

Drumelzier, strange name for Britain, I wonder its origins. Not in the Scottish Borders but well north of them.

The Wikipedia article on the village explains the name. The letter Z in Scots names usually comes from an earlier letter "Yogh." Drum was earlier on Dun or Dum and could be Gaelic for castle. The second part may refer to King Meldred.

"Merlin" was a title. The Druids word of "shaman" or "high priest".. Merlin was the shaman pope. There were many men who bore the title of a Merlin which is why, he is able to come back when England is in need.. consider a prophecy replacing the word with pope - there's still a pope but not THE pope who sat on the throne when the prophecy was spoken.

The area that features in this video was where the Goddodin were, and they like the people in Wales were ancient Britons The Gododdin were a Brittonic people who originated in the Hen Ogledd, or Old North, of north-eastern Britannia. This area is now known as southeast Scotland and northeast England. The Gododdin are best known as the subject of the Welsh poem Y Gododdin, which is considered one of the oldest poems in Scotland. I have read somewhere that the Southern Brits (current day Wales)people had the Red Dragon banner and the Green dragon Banner would have been used by the Brits in the North.

This is possible. Arthurs dad was an invading king of England. Arthurs mom had her husband killed in battle. She was only queen by marriage. To protect Arthur, a noble took him to his father's homeland. The Bear. Arthur was raised there. But after his mom sabotaged the new king, he fled across the water to find his son. Arthur went back to England, but made his capital in today's Germany. After he fell in battle, his body was taken back to England. Merlin could have been Scottish. . Arthurs country still uses the Bear on their flag today. He was king of the wits.. Oh, Lance was the son of the dead English king, and his sister. Lance, or Tristan, was inbred. He had a Trist, with Arthur's Viking wife. . Arthurs mom knew, if she gives birth to a son, his wife will be queen. She couldn't stand the thought. . I found Camelot. Lance changed his name to Lancelot claiming he was the true king. Camelot, and Lancelot, are just to close in spelling. Lance's armor was made with shimmering copper, and turned green. . Tristan was 8 feet tall. The Giant Knight. Arthur was very big. But only stood to Lance's armpit. . After lance and Arthur fought, lance vowed to forever serve Arthur, the most fare King. . Rest in peace, Giant. Sincerely, Ingred. The main ingredient.
