I had a '69 back in late '70's. Great little car. Joined the navy in 1980; gave the car to my older sister. She was driving it on the freeway in Tulsa & it caught on fire n burned to the ground. That was a great little car.

I was the bug shop around here in early 80s, my family has great stories around bugs,we have lots of them in buildings that need restored but life gets in the way. Last year my wife died from complications from an accident that happened 40 years ago, last summer I saw a bug on Facebook and bought it and spent a couple of months doing mechanicals on it and have been driving the wheels off it, nothing brings back good memories like a bug.

I’ve got a 72 bug convertible still original grandpa bought it new he loved bugs , runs great no rust and has 73,000 miles , I got it in 1988 after his death, , I love bringing it out and driving it the looks I get

I want to cry every time I see you working on all the older VW stuff here in Canada the older stuff is few and far between especially the kit cars that were made with them like the Manx still regret not buying a 52 mg kit that was a VW base when I was 16.

Merlin I noticed you struggling with bleeding the VW brakes. I would recommend a couple tricks I use in the field. 1st, an air actuated bleeder, Mityvac is the brand I use and it's been a life saver for automotive and marine for fluid extracting and brakes / clutch bleeding. 2nd, I had trouble bleeding a chopper with apes on a long springer front end. Used a syringe / section of hose to inject fluid into the caliper to force the air up. Hope that helps.

Man hobo freight has a air self bleeder that works second to none. Just hook the end over the fitting on the caliper, crack it open and hit the air nozzle. When done sucking fluid just close the fitting and hit the next side. It is so easy to use and it's only $35

I always pulled the tank and cleaned the filter in the bottom of the tank. A bug with 1600 will run right at 20 miles on what is in the line when the filter is plug.

My 1971 Super Beetle was from FL. I'm from the Northeast. It was literally rust free and had non working AC. Vent pod was mounted under the dash. Not sure if that was a dealer option or not. Compressor had been removed. I can only image how much HP that was robbing when in use.

I always wanted a VW so when I got the chance I got a clean (stock) 65 Bug. I sourced out a VW shop in Peoria AZ, gave them a ton of $$ for a 1915 (New everything HI Po), Dual webers (I got empi crap) pro street trans, 12V, updated brakes, ect.. ect....... The best of everything. The car never ran for shit. I had it towed back 6 times for it not running. I gave up. I Cut my losses, and sold it for 1/2 what I had invested. Funny part is I had asked A lot of VW members what shop to stay away from they all said this was a great shop, for parts. ZERO of them would have their cars worked on there as I learned afterwards. Thanks VW members and that Shop.

In the late 60’s my dad would buy bugs for 25-50 bucks, fix them up and sell them for 200. Hot fudge sundae’s that night. He would of loved VW Wednesday in Havasu

Love old VWs, had a sandrail i built myself and Dune buggy my father in law brought back to Michigan from California, still have the buggy but sold the rail, couldnt hardly get my old bucket in and out of it any more, Vdubs are the only vehicle you can repair trail side with a just a leatherman tool.

I had a 63 Sedan and we put a 1800 with dual carbs on it and at one time moved 15" speaker from a Curtis Mathis Stereo to use like a Sub Woofer, guess if I was to own another first choice would be a Karman Ghia although building a Herbie might be fun

Truthfully...I can't think of a better place to have a car meet than at In N Out Burger! Not only cool cars but great food!. Thank you Merlin for taking this journey and bringing us along. Lots of nice older VW's there. They sure are gems. Back in the 60's...they were just cars that got great fuel mileage...but we didn't need it back then. I had 4x4's and gas was cheap and plentiful...till the gas shortage...and that started the change. Thanks again Merlin.

I grew up in So.Cal. my brother and I used to paint Bugs in our garage and had fun doing it and learning about the VW movement as people put it. My brother built a Bug with of course a really nice paint job and all of the new parts we bought at a VW shop in Azusa California and the parts that were restored from the Pomona fair grounds Auto swap meet. everyone has a bug story my brother built his bug and was on his way to work and some trucker almost took him off the face of the earth His car was cherry and it was junk in one day on its maiden voyage as he was side swiped in the Rain on the 605 frwy. It took him another couple of months to fix and sell it He never built another one. take care.

Man that was great. Loved it. I wish I had known you when my daughter had her VW. She got stuck so many times when it wouldn’t start. Had it in a VW shop and they never figured it out. One of her friends from school said they had someone that could fix it. Well they took it and we never saw it again! Paid $4,000 for it. My ex husband said we paid for a $4,000 painful job! Thanks Merlin. Really enjoyed the video
