Buying the proper foot wear for hiking can be a bit stressful. And with so many options out there I thought I would give you my honest opinion on the Merrell Moab 2 Midrise hiking boots and what to look for when you are out looking for a pair of your own.

Wore moabs on my deployment, solid. You’re 100% on with nothing being “waterproof” the only thing truly waterproof is your skin. Leather is better than synthetic for water resistance however trade offs, venting capabilities etc. Proper socks and insoles makes a world of difference. Great video, so many channels are essentially glorified ads just reading off the spec sheet with a pair of boots never been worn straight out of the box. Having actual experience and some insights I’ve never heard is fantastic.

@T thank you so much for watching! And thank you for your service! Glad I could provide some fresh insight on the subject! I did hike a small section in Virginia with a guy that had leather boots. He had some great points on why he liked them but he had just as many reasons why he didn't. So, personally I'm staying away from leather (for now at least). Haha

Loved your two deer in the background with the turkeys. I love Merrell shoes. Bought my first pair (a set of two) about 6 years ago. I'm still wearing them. But just bought three more pair (all at discounted prices: a pair of Moab 2 Granite Hiking Shoes, a pair of Moab 2 Ventilator Men's Low Top Lace Up Hiking Shoes and a pair of Moab Speed Black Hiking Shoes), because though my older pairs are presently more comfortable (being well broken in), I have used them for work, so are looking worn. I'm also planning to get Moab 2 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots, just to have a pair that have a higher top. But since I live in hot and humid Florida, not really into higher topped shoes or boots...plus I like to be able to just pull on my shoes rather than having to tie and untie my walking wear. The ONLY 'complaint' I would voice with the Merrell's are the fact that the laces - while cool looking and durable - the ones I have, have tended to loosen easier than other laces. But no real big deal. I have had Wolverine and Timberland, and like them both. But prefer the Merrell's.

This is my second pair of the low cut moab shoe. Wear them every day at work, and have done some easy trails with them. Was thinking about trying Ultras, only because everyone recommends them. But not excited about how quick they wear out. Didn't know there was a difference between water proof and gortex. Will check out these moab boots, as well as the keen, because my foot is getting wider, in my old age. Thanks. Hope to see you in Massachusetts for some A.T. trail magic.

I have used Merrells for a lot of years now. I honestly can't even remember for how long, but easily 15 years, most likely more than that... and I never thought about the types like Vent, Waterproof and Gore Tex. You can always learn something new! Along the years, I've tried other brands, but keep getting back to Merrell. By the way, for the first time I ordered the shoe instead of the boot, been wanting to try them out for quite some time, but never opted for the shoe until now. Also, I wear them practically every day.

Great job! I love my waterproof hiking boots (Keen Targhee III mids) only used three pair for 2,193 miles and the third pair is still in use. Lol Plus, unlike those near me with trail runners, my feet were never sore nor was my feet in pain after my thru-hike. You are correct on the drying times...my boots dried pretty fast for a waterproof boot. Also...go with a whole size larger, a half size won’t do it on those steep declines of the AT. Look into getting one pair of waterproof socks (like Seal Skins)...this is for the mornings you get up, your boot is still wet, you can put on the dry waterproof socks into a saturated boot and your feet not only stay dry...the sock will speed up the drying time of your boot. Bonus!

Great review! I have a pair of Merrells that I bought in '08 and only now are they starting to show a wee bit of wear. While I don't hike (thanks to bad knees, hips, and back from 22 years of Army service), I've worn them in Canadian winter, south Texas summer, for yard work, riding and selling Harley-Davidsons, and everything in between. Over the years, they've been the most comfortable boots I own. Only now am I looking at buying a pair of Moab 3 Waterproofs. Thanks for the great review, you've definitely helped me make my decision to pick up another pair. Love your style, keep up the great work and be safe out there!

I’m in a very rainy environment, but also sweat issues… the mesh ontop freaks me out looks like a sponge to collect water… based on this ima go with the “Dry” version (and get some 💦 repellent spray). I have only had my Moab speeds for a couple of days so far, but because I am an RN and work 12h shifts, I am a pretty good judge of shoes. Impressed with the Speed so far and will put them to the test working 48h over the next 5 days. I also ordered the ventilators and will be sending them back...the Speeds are much more comfortable/cushioned and light weight. FYI, I suggest ordering a half to a whole size larger depending on the thickness of socks you plan to wear or to allow for swelling. I wear compression socks every shift to help with swelling and ordered a half size larger. If I planned to wear with thicker socks, I would order a whole size larger.

You asked for feedback, so here goes. I've had hiking boots from a variety of companies, including Merrell. Recently I bought four new pairs: New Balance, FILA, Skechers, and Avia. The Avias were only about $25 - by far the least expensive. The others were around $60-65 (I got them on sale, though). Examining them all closely, and comparing and testing them out carefully, the Avias come out on top, which really surprised me. I did add extra insoles with gel heels. I usually like New Balance, but they came in last in this case. I've had other shoes made by Skechers, and they have always been very durable; they consistently exceed expectations. They have many more styles than I was aware of before visiting one of their stores recently. The FILAs are also excellent. I would put them in nearly a tie for first place overall.

Vive Viveka, thank you so much for your insight on some other brands! I've heard lots of good things about FILA. I was considering a pair a few weeks ago but then decided against it (I figured I had enough shoes lol) Everyone has a different need when it comes to footwear. Especially out on trail! I appreciate you sharing your experience and I'm sure others will also! Thank you :) (And high five for getting those kicks on sale!)

@@MandyMooToo Hi I just got my merells! The moab 2 wp and the altalight. I much prefer the altalight as it has better ancle support because its a bit higher. Also altalight outsole is more flatter making it more comfortable to step on ground. It also breathes mich better then the moab2 wp. With moab 2 wp I feel the heat building up and get hot under your feet. With altalight you dont have that heat build up and it feels more comfortable and you can hike longer before removing the shoe to dry it. I haven't done the real world test yet in the trail. But spending a few hours in each boot at home gave me those impressions. I just learned there is a new boot from merelle the moab fast! Uses same outsole as moab 2 but with some new features. Its a shoe that designed for fast hikers and trail conqueror's. I will order that one too to try.

I have had the same pair of Merrell hikers for better than 8 + years. The tags have worn off and I couldn't even tell you what model they are or even the size. But as a person who has foot issues, a neuroma in one foot and general pain in the other, I have to wear special insoles in work boots and street shoes, but the Merrell's are the only shoes I can get away with not wearing the special insoles if need be. They're that good. I am totally sold on Merrell hikers. I am looking at trying the Moab model of boots in the future too. But these that I currently have I believe are majority leather and as long as I don't cinch them down too tight, my feet never hurt, they're very durable, give great traction, all around great boot. Great video.

The boots are color coordinated with the hat ... LOVE IT! Not a bad choice for hiking shoe, more weight than a trail runner, but also more support for your foot bed and ankles. You need to consider water drainage, and I would stay away from Gortex/Waterproof in general (for breathability) ... but they can be advantageous in Winter conditions (i.e. Feb/Mar start date on the AT). That being said, I would think the Vent version fits most of your needs and again is an awesome choice. They're on my list as well. #ROCKSylvania is wating!

I have something around 20 pairs of various hiking type boots (and boot OCD I think) as I obviously love the things & wear them for general daily use and pick up some offers occasionally and also do a little hiking. Some are small size so I keep them for warmer weather and thinner socks and also replace the insoles if needed ( I have a lot of these also) with something thinner like just a thin few mm foot freshener (Kiwi used to do really thin ones but seemed to stop for some reason?) insole if it gives me more room comfort. You lose a bit of shock absorption but usually the mid and outsoles are plenty sufficient in fact sometimes really spongy insoles are not a nice feeling. You could try this with your smaller boots which might help some with your toes bashing off the front of the boots. The deer seem to like you. Nice. BTW I am still trying to work out boots but at least I have a lot to try & can basically throw them away if I don't like them or they wear out quickly with my lifetime stock lol. I don't actually even really have a favourite as after messing with customising the insole and wearing an appropriate sock I find them all comfortable and useful and no single one the ultimate perfect in very way boot. Comfort as in a good fit which you can adjust some is obviously the biggest factor, for me anyway.

Bought Merrell Accentor 3 gortex walking shoes , hoping they would last 6/9 months of walking 8/10 miles of countryside walking a day. Great grippy soles ,thou after 1 MONTH They let the water in when it was raining and the fabric started to peel. Exchanged for another pair, and once again, when it rains, my feet get damp. My heavy Meindl ex German army boots are still going strong , keep my feet dry and i would imagine i will still be wearing them in 3 years time.

I have worn many pairs of Merrells out to the point of holes in the bottoms. I have since switched to Keens Targhee vents. I find Merrells quality has dropped drastically since they were bought out by Wolverine.

I hate when companies loose quality when they change hands like that :( I'm not sure when Wolverine bought them out. But maybe I have pre-Wolverine Merrells! 😱🙊 we can only hope haha

I am looking for boots to replace my crap Timberlands (soles coming unglued). Been looking at the Moab 3 and the Targhee III. Targhee III were uncomfortable, so going to try the Moab's. But in researching all of this, I heard the exact same thing about the Keen Targhee III... quality has gone way downhill over last couple years and the boots come undone fairly easily after 6 months or so of use. Are the Moab's holding up so far?

I have the same boots, but I do have a question since I am assuming that you have hiked longer than me. How many miles before buying new?
@MandyMooToo
@MandyMooToo 3 жыл бұрын
I've heard between 500-1000 miles depending on the usage and the condition they are in from the terrain you choose to hike in. My first pair had about 50miles on them and then one rolled into a fire pit 🔥 lol I wish there was a hard and fast rule for that. But I do know quality boots will take care of you if you take care of them :) (and Vibram soles seem to last forever haha ) I found an article that shows you the signs to watch for when it comes to replacing your boots. I'll do a video on it for you Christy Johnson :) but incase you need the info sooner here is the article: www.sierra.com/blog/hiking/replace-hiking-boots-trail-shoes/

My only complaint over the years is that the TC5 Vibram they use on Moabs is not nearly as grippy as the newer shoes out there with Vibram Megagrip. Moabs are durable for sure, but on wet logs and roots and smooth surfaces the Moab just doesnt have grip.

What kind of people do you hang with that they freak out on what you wear? Nice boots, good moab description, had merrels in the past, never moab model. See a good deal on a light grey reflective moab 3.

good thing they don't have 12.5 apparently no one has 12.5 anymore so i'm forced to use 13s - i have thin as feet for being tall and i guess 13 fit fine going by the thumb thing. so that's cool. ty :) - love the microphone!

Thank you so much for watching! My base layer is an athletic shirt from Walmart. I believe it was a danskin. And my outer layer is a 250 Merino Wool Shirt. Which would be considered a base layer in colder weather. I filmed this on a nice fall day and used it as a sweater. :)

I just got my first pair of Merrill ‘s. I’m not happy with them I got the Roam mid rise. What I find is that it goes up my shin way too far and causes pain when I walk and I only wore them to the store today. So I think I’m gonna give these Moab‘s waterproof a shot. I don’t think they look as though they go higher up the shin but more just over the ankle bone. Would you say that’s correct?

Hey DLynn Rochelle! Yes, these only cover the ankle. And I love that because I enjoy the ankle support when I'm on trail. Especially going down hill in rocky terrain.

3 Years? You probably have progressed quite a bit since then. As for that toe sizing do this. Put your toe to the front of the boot then try and put two fingers behind your heel. If you can, you got room for the toe at the front. To help keep your feet dry and keep out debris add gaitors.

I've had that happen to me before during a sale. Actually it was when I bought the boots in this video. I asked the store for a "rain check" and I was able to come back later and buy my size at the sale price.

@@MandyMooToo I wear 13 extra wide so I was just excited to find my size it's very hard to find my size in shops usually only online and once you get up to teh bigger sizes they vary wildly by brand in terms of sizing -.-

I've had dirt and pebbles sneak their way into both types of boots for me. But I dont have the issue when I remember to bring (and wear) my gaiters. Because the dirt is coming into the boot from the top.

Yes it goes through. I wore my Merrell vents in a desert and by the end of a day my sock was covered in dust and I could feel the accumulation in my shoe. But besides this one very particular location I have never had an issue with dust in shoe
