My tiny mind is blown. I made my first ever Ohio Star block as a practice yesterday as I’m a new quilter and oh my goodness, I was so mentally drained by all the places it could (and did 😂) have an ‘accuracy fail’ - I even managed to sew one side with the points facing the wrong way and my stitches were so tiny I had a real time of it with my seam ripper too . I will continue to strive for perfection but this video has given m hope that just sometimes, wonky is better than perfect! Amazing - now to watch it again and again as there is a lot to take in in this one!!! ❤

I love the quilt. I rejoice in your skill. I want to copy how you do things. However, you go so fast that my poor brain was unable to comprehend the concepts. Have mercy on us! You have a great command of quilting. I am going to watch this again and again and if it kills me, I am going to get it one day. I will play it, back it up, play it again. Whew! I'm in for it. Keep it up though....this is greatness ....I'm just not there yet.
@merrymabelmarket Жыл бұрын
Make just ONE block and you will "get" it. That will give you a reference point to understand the "sreamlined" part. Cut out 9 background 2.5 inch blocks. ONE start center 2.5 inch block. AND THEN....Make the wonky triangle start points. Pause the DVD. It's honestly simple. Just make one yourself while pausing through the first part of the steps and you will get it.

LOVE IT! When I was in second grade for some reason the teacher let is draw stars on the chalkboard. I hadn't learned where you make the angles that cross over each other as most adults would do. Nor did I just cross many lines as a very small child might do. I think I drew the outline of the star so they were very wonky. These blocks would make a great addition to your Run, Run, Reindeer pattern. The baby you made quilt is simply gorgeous.

I really enjoy how you showed the entire process of chain sewing. I try to sew as much as I can without cutting threads and many times that means feeding through parts of the block, clipping the first sections so that I can join the last piece of the unit. Great illustration of block units stored in the small container. That makes it sew easy to sit down for 10 mins and get some sewing accomplished, even if it’s only two more blocks.

Make ONE block. Cut out the 8 background squares. The center square the color of the star. Sew the points (triangles) on the four point blocks. Lay them out and sew them together. ONCE you have made one block. I bet the rest of it will magically make sense. Best wishes to you!!
@nancyarchibald9095 Жыл бұрын
@MerryMabelMarket I sure hope so. Thx for the quick run down. You're right, if I make ONE Block, the rest should fall into place. I enjoy chain piecing whenever possible. I just bought the wonky star pattern from MSQC, so with both, I should be able to catch on. Thanks for sharing your process. I'm more inclined to coordinate colors and make it look scrappy, but follow a color scheme. I have several "Bee themed" prints in Grey's and Yellows. I'm excited to try it! ☺️ 🐝

I do go fast. But because of the beauty of KZbin... you can do it. Cut out a center (2.5 inches), and then cut the backgrounds (8 - 2.5 inch blocks). Follow along with the sewing process ONE step at a time. (Hit the pause button.) Pretty soon you will have a block and will know how fun this block is!

Do you not trim away the excess fabric from the 2.5 inch squares once the star points are sewed on. I did a practice block and I’m not sure I like that extra thickness or in the scheme of things it doesn’t matter. It’s a cute block but I must admit it’s out of my comfort zone so I’m thinking before I tackle a quilt I would try a wall hanging. I’m intrigued by the process
@merrymabelmarket Жыл бұрын
I have trimmed away the extra fabric after trimming in my past. However, I no longer do that. I feel like it stabilizes the block to keep the original square on. (No bias.) So - I never trim them now. It might be a problem (the thickness) if you are handquilting. Machine quilting it will zoom right over it.
@lizschwartz7447 Жыл бұрын
@@merrymabelmarket thank you for responding. I’ll do that with not trimming the excess. Star blocks is something i love but the traditional way I had problems with. I would just love to make it into a king size for my bed. Thanks for sharing!
@deleanabadger4037 Жыл бұрын
I need measurements! The blocks look like five inch squares, but how wide and how long are the strips of star fabric?
@merrymabelmarket Жыл бұрын
To make the 9 patch.... you need 2.5 inch squares. The center square is of course the star color. As for the strips to sew into points? Just use scraps. FOR SURE a 2.5 inch strip would work. One strip will make at least two. (Depends on how you sew or conserve fabric.) Have fun!!
