Merseyrail history. A trip on the Liverpool Manchester railway in 1830

Before the Liverpool Manchester Railway was opened actress Fanny Kemble, Was given a preview ride by George Stephenson. This is her account of that trip. The way she describes the line & the locomotives gives an insite to the way people thought in those times

Thanks for an excellent video covering Fanny Kemble's anthropomorphic description of her journey. My 1970's comedy brain struggled to keep in couple of double entendre's during the narration.

Cheers she had a unique way of describing her journey. Then again she had no other form of reference. I just wish she had a different name, it does have some unfortunate double meanings to today's minds

I've been waiting for another episode with baited breath and my god did you deliver it tonight. What charm and lightness of touch to describe a steam engine, it's utterly seductive. What a fascinating woman she must have been, and she appreciated older guys too......I love your unique angle (on a subject I did for my CSE History) and it sets the whole scene alive full of fascination, exhilaration, emotion and passion. She did have a lovely way of describing the locomotives, she could be described as a early railway enthusiast, one of many millions that would follow right through to this day

She was an accomplished actress and writer. He family had a theatrical background & she naturally followed the family tradition. Her acting was highly acclaimed throughout her life. She later settled in America were she married a plantation owner. She was disgusted by the treatment of the plantations slaves and eventually divorced her husband due to his attitude to the slaves, & his infidelity. She went on to fight for abolishing of slavery. And later returned to England & resumed acting. This is just a snapshot of her life. There has been films about her, though mostly concentrating on her fight to abolish slavery
