I grew up in Edmonton in the '70s and '80s. There was a special time in the early '80s when EVERY boy in my junior high gleefully reenacted Bob and Doug episodes on Monday mornings that we'd watched on Friday night. And then SCTV got Americanized, and something pure, funny and Canadian got spoiled.

Hollywood rides on our backs like a parasite and spoils everything it touches. Real Americans loved the true Canadian culture, our neighbors to the North. SCTV was the funniest thing I ever saw, especially the fake commercials.

Rush is an amazing band, both lyrically and musically. Their drummer, Neil Peart, unfortunately passed away due to illness a few years ago. He was called The Professor because he wrote most of Rush’s lyrics. There is a KZbin video of a drum solo. He did in Frankfurt Germany. That will blow your mind. Rush has some great songs, my favourite is Tom Sawyer. But there are a host of others that are mentioned below. Fantastic band.

@YT_MertCan - Rush was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and deservedly so. Neil Peart was considered one of it not THE best rock drummer of all time and he was usually their lyricist. Losing his wife and daughter tragically he took a year long motorcycle journey and wrote a book about how to deal with grief. A brilliant man. Geddy (Gary) Lee is an absolutely amazing bassist. When he played guitar or keyboards he would play bass with his feet using a synthesizer. Alex Lifeson was an amazing guitarist. Three men produced the sound of a dozen. They had a worldwide following. When inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame Alex's speech consisted of @ 2 minutes of "blah, blah, blah" mocking the banality of acceptance speeches. They were all comical guys. On stage they would have tons of silly props like washing machines and rubber chickens. I'm not a fan of heavy stuff but their virtuosity was magnetic.

Both songs got good air play when released, and both are my playlists. As for Geddy Lee and Rush, they were a Canadian powerhouse group with a library of music that I think you will enjoy exploring. Songs that come to mind for you to start with are, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Subdivisions. Something else you might enjoy from the era of Great White North, and you should watch the documentary of it's production as well as listen to the song is Tears are not Enough by Northern Lights. Rush is often regarded as one of the most talented band of all time. Geddy Lee was consistently regarded as one of if not the best Bassist in Rock and the same can be said for Drummer and Lyricist Neil Peart (pronounced Pea-rt) who was along with Jon Bonham of Led Zeppelin considered the greatest rock drummer ever. All three members of the band were great friends and kept the same lineup from 1975 up until 2020 when Neil Peart died of brain cancer RIP. I recommend you watch the video "Dinner With Rush" which is pretty funny

Geddy Lee was the bassist, kayboardist and lead singer of Ruch - a Canadian ProgRock group that was out at the same time as "Yes" in the '70s and '80s. They used to sneak into "Yes" concerts they were too young to get into. But - in a weird twist of fate - it was Geddy Lee who inducted "Yes" into the R&R Hall of Fame - and took the late Chris Squires' place on stage when they played "Roundabout" at the Awards night. How cool is that ?!?

You won't be sorry!! 🤘😎🤘 (Geddy's amazing vocals are just the tip of the iceberg!) The Rush boys are really more 'anti' rock stars. They are adorably awkward guys with a great sense of humor, who don't take themselves too seriously. (They frequently used the 3 Stooges theme music when coming on stage.) Bob and Doug McKenzie were introduced as characters to mock the Canadian content laws of the country. It's really important that you watch entire episodes of SCTV to fully grasp what is going on in each of these little skits. I can't overstate how important that is. Bob and Doug were introduced because the government of the day complain that the show resemble too closely common shows out of USA, and they needed to be substantially Canadian content in each episode. So, the SCTV creators came up with Bob and Doug, quintessentially Canadian boys just to mock the requirements. They had no idea they would become such iconic characters, arguably the most famous and popular characters in Canadian TV history.

It's funny, because I always say I'm not a Rush fan. Then a song comes on and I always sing along! Neil Peart was known as one of the best drummers of all time, r.i.p. If you haven't seen the movie I Love You Man with Segal and Rudd, it kinda sums up Rush fans ("slappin' the bass"). There are also live concerts to watch from all over the world. The one that sticks in my brain is when they were in Brazil, I think, and had the washers/dryers going behind them!

Getty Lee one of the best vocals in Rock! Rush rules Canadian music. Getty was out of his comfort zone when it came to comedy. However he loved them so much he agreed to do the record.

The 12 days of Christmas (Bob & Doug MacKenzie version), would get played on the radio in Canada (and a bit in the US) around Christmas time as a tradition for quite awhile, (not so much anymore.)

I remember hearing both these songs on the radio when they came out. The xmas one is still played every xmas. Rush has been my favourite band since 1975. They're incredible musicians with a 40 year library of amazing songs. Suggestions for Rush songs: Fly by Night, Lakeside Park, 2112, Something for Nothing, A Passage to Bangkok, Closer to the Heart, Xanadu, La Villa Strangiato, The Spirit of Radio, Freewill, Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, Limelight, Subdivisions, The Analog Kid, Between the Wheels, Manhattan Project, Marathon, Lock and Key, Presto, Available Light, Roll the Bones, Ghost of a Chance, Bravado, Leave that Thing Alone, Nobody's Hero, The Garden. This is just scratching the surface. Be sure to pay attention to the incredibly well written lyrics. Neil Peart, Rush's drummer, was the band's main lyricist. He passed away in January 2020. All the guys in Rush were kind of unusual for rock stars in that they didn't take themselves too seriously. Alex Lifeson, the guitarist, is absolutely hilarious. You should see his guest starring role on an episode of the Canadian show Trailer Park Boys as well. Also, give the movie I Love you, Man a watch with Paul Rudd & Jason Segel.

So pleased you did a video with this one. It's a must-play every year for me. I love the part where they are trying to work out the twelve days.

You should watch or listen to some rush songs. They're an amazing band, incredibly talented all (3?) Of them if i remember correctly. First one i would suggest is "closer to the heart" the amount of tempo changes. And solos in a single song is just amazing to listen to.

Welcome to the hit single part of our record, eh. That it's a great backing track is the crux of the joke; it wouldn't work otherwise. You talked over my favourite line in the song, so you may have missed it. Bob goes, "Guess what? It's over." And Doug says, "Take off, it can't be." And Bob says, "THESE HIT RECORDS ARE SHORT."🤣

Everyone is going to mention "Tom Sawyer" by Rush, it's a great song and a song to introduce into Rush's music. Their masterpiece in my opinion was the album 2112. I always try to mention this song when Rush is mentioned even though it's actually a Max Webster song but all three members of Rush play on it called "Battlescar". I was too young to have seen it but they actually played my High School before they released their first album when John Rutzey was still their drummer. Neill Peart who replaced Rutzey completely changed the sound of Rush, they were more of a rock/blues band (a great song off of their first album is "Working Man") that transformed into a prog rock band and Peart was one of the most highly regarded drummers in the world. I actually got the Great White North album for a Christmas gift when it was popular, I used to love watching SCTV back in the day and it still makes me laugh. At the beginning of each episode they would show a shot of someone throwing a tv out the window from an apartment building.
