Merweville, Karoo Western Cape

Merweville is a town located in Beaufort West Municipality, Western Cape. Village 45 km north-west of Prince Albert Road and 130 km south-east of Beaufort West. It was established on the farm Vanderbylskraal in 1904 and administered by a village management board from 1921.Named after the Reverend P van der Merwe (1860-1940), minister at Beaufort West of the Dutch Reformed Church, and chairman of the church council which established the town.
The town is an isolated community that maintains an old-world charm, about 150 km from Beaufort West. The surrounding region has been likened to that of Nevada or Arizona. It was one of the few towns or villages in the province not to be serviced by a sealed highway until the 40 km stretch of gravel road from the N1 was tarred in 2015.

I just wish when people do documentaries about Merweville our town that they would come to our side of the town across the river because Merweville doesn't just of one part there is more to Merweville than just the "front part"!

We tried desperately to get hold of anyone who wanted to participate. We also asked around town and in the one day we were there this is who we found. It would help alot if there was a place that had records of people and info of the town available. We note your comment and thoughts and really sorry we never got to meet you.

Wonderlike dorpie. Hier woon nog regte egte boeremense. My swaer boer in die distrik. Nie aldag maklik nie, maar hier kan mense saamstaan soos min!! Hou ook elke jaar n kerkbazaar wat ondersteun word uit alle oorde. Moenie net deurry nie, bly oor en geniet die gasvryheid.

My neighbour from Cape Town was a widow. Tannie Annien and her late husband Dolf were both teachers in Merweville many many moons ago. She told me after school one neighbouring mom would prepare lunch (like a stack of pancakes) for all of the children after school, that they did in turn every day of the week. That was so amazing to hear that people cared so much about each other.
