Wow, I saw this film and can't believe it's been 8 years since then. What a delight to see this panel interview. Many years ago someone sent me a link to the YTs of Florence Foster Jenkins singing, and of course I was on the floor laughing although I didn't know the story behind her, um, performances, and of her life. This really was wonderful. THANKS!

I was happy when Meryl mentioned she is lucky to have the chance because a lot of actors don't even get the chance because it's so true. It's not just talent that gets you the part, it's also connections or luck or just looking the part the best more than anybody else. And if you're not an American or white it's even harder.

Sadly, it’s also about syphilis she got from her husband. In advanced stages it gives the feeling of grandiosity. She was a prodigy pianist who couldn’t play after an accident.

Key to understanding Florence is syphilis she contracted from her husband at very young age. In advanced stages it gives a feeling of grandiosity (can be confused with Narcissistic Personality Disorder according to Sam Vaknin). That's why she hasn’t seen anything wrong with her singing. Also, she was a prodigy piano player, have had sound education in music. Singing and music was more part of life then today. This movie showed nicely atmosphere of appreciation for music, art in her social circles, popularity of amateur theater groups. I was introduced to Florence's singing 20 years ago by music teacher as something laughable for classical music lovers (not like P.D.Q. Bach). 'Love story' was a very good angle here. People around her were polite but also knew her long enough to love and support her. I love scene in the lift when Simon Helberg's character finally laughs. His joy of getting well paid job, and even more relief after witnessing surreal situation. He is an excellent comedian. Because singing, music is so often gone from early stages of our life (first thousand days from conception are crucial) we have so many poor American Idol auditions and people brainwashed into following really bad music. Also, we have an epidemic of narcissistic behaviors. Among Millennials NPD is three times more prevalent. And line between class act and kitsch can be very thin (or blurred by mediocre 'artists'). When music is present at home you may have children like son of composer Rick Beato, boy with perfect pitch or Jackie Evancho, Amira Willhagen, Angelina Jordan. BTW Andrzej Wajda used the same 'technique' with his actors. He has had access to the best one because of his communist connections, allegiance. And they were doing his job, like setting the scenes. He took away stage, limelight, resources, Oscar (see: allegiance) from much more talented people.

This interviewer talks too much. She has 3 eloquent actors who undoubtedly could speak for hours minimally prompted, but it seems she is much too conscious about appearing informed & intelligent. Ironically, she speaks about the director getting out of the way of the performers. She could have taken a hint from that technique.

An Intelligent delightful interview that I enjoyed very much. Particularly honest about the director and their own reaction to not being over directed and the vulnerability of the actor: waiting for the crushing that is not what I'm after type direction, never coming from the director but still being insecure enough to expect it. To me it shows the real lack of arrogance in this talented trio. A truly delightful film full of warmth and understanding. I am also glad the court scene was taken out. I feel it would have set an unfair premise on Hugh Grants character. Was he wasn't he a gold digger? I might change my mind about that several times but at the end of the day we will never know and I do not personally think worth the distraction from a very well done and extremely enjoyable film. Do not politisise everything. It was wrong to politisise the ending

Ms Insdorf needs to learn the art of interviewing. Ask your question, then shut up and let the guests answer. She should remember that humans have two ears and only one mouth, they should be used in that order. That lady is far too interested in her own voice. Compare this interview with one hosted by Graham Norton about the same subject and with both Hugh and Meryl.

I agree with the people who say that the interviewer should just shut up and let the guests speak. She also surprised me enormously with a couple of her pronunciations: she has obviously gone to a great deal of trouble to make her speech sound educated, to the verge of preciousness, and yet she says “singer” with a hard “g”; and as, I assume a film critic, she really ought to know that “Laundrette” has only two syllables.

MrMaxxRo -> That's probably true today because the nurturing of art is done in places like NYC and LA/SF which are also centers of Leftism. From the 20s through the 60s there were many conservative artists in LA. Many would say that the Left is destroying the arts. The art center in LA has a huge sculpture of a dog peeing on the art building which says a lot about the art within. Many artists that don't conform to the Leftist orthodoxy are ostracized. This will change because the Left ultimately "eats its own" - they battle each other for dominance and they end up giving awards to each other for crap. It's the history of the Left.
