This movie was absolutely amazing. It was so emotionally charged. Meryl's performance had me on the verge of tears almost the whole way through. A truly gifted and beautiful woman.

I saw this when it first came out. It was a cold rainy day in Memphis TN. I remember every detail of that day. It comes back to me all the time! I was 3 1. I am now 71. I've seen a lot of movies during my life. This is the finest performance on film in the talking era. ever!!! I think I saw Meryl in a PBS production of The Taming of the S in the 1970 s. am I right? I have lo bed Meryl for years I love her humanity and her humor and her talent and her great beauty. She continues to be smashing to this day! A true genius. And one of the most influential people in my life! And I was taught by a professor from Yale. Thanks Meryl. You are the Best!S

as Meryl Streep is playing Sophie she becomes the most beautiful woman on earth - their portrayal of life fighting pain is magnificent !

I remember thinking in the 1980s, 'what's the big deal about Meryl Streep?' Then I saw Sophie's Choice. It's hard to think of another performance this epic - maybe Vivien Leigh in Gone with the Wind. I was so moved by Streep's character that I couldn't even cry - crying seemed too trite for this story. I think 'numbed' is a better description.

+Dave Glo Absolutely epic! I remember literally forgetting myself, I was so sucked into Meryl Streep's performance. After I watched the movie, I went to the restroom and then looked into the mirror and didn't even recognize myself. That's never happened to me before or since.

This is so beautiful. I have just finished the novel and anyone who has a love for Meryl Streep and the extreme tragedy and sadness for this film must read William Styron's novel.

What can one say about Streep's performance. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's clearly an 11. They don't come any better than this one.

One of the greatest movies ever made. I fell in love with the movie and Meryl Streep when I saw it years ago and still love them both. I recently visited Auchwitz and thought of the pivotal scene as I toured.

I 'm now 65yrs old . My older sister insisted we see this film. We were changed in ways we can't define. This story, the music, and Emily Dickinson... I am a poet, a writer and a survivor of mental illness. My sister and I are so very grateful to have experienced such a great movie . It has changed us . Sincerely Lisa and June.

Meryl is such a talented professional, for all that entails, such as drawing on one's own emotions to realistically portray a certain scene.. but I'm imagining her going home at night and weeping during the filming

not reading the part about "the choice" was a smart decision. it felt organic and real and as an actress, she became invested in the character.

I watched this movie once - and only once - because I could not bare to see her make a decision over which child. It bothered me so that I couldn't stop crying. I have two children and cannot see me making a decision like that. Very Very hard.

I need to read the book. I’m currently in the process of watching every single one of Meryl’s movies..a resolution that I made myself because Meryl’s my favourite actor and indisputably my heroine in both her craft, and self as a beautiful human being. Just finished this one for the second time. Won’t be watching it again for a loooonnngg time, I’ll tell you that! ❤️

The pinnacle of Meryl Streep's career? Probably not, but her unforgettable performance set her on the road to a career which is amongst the most memorable in motion picture history.

I don’t think there will ever be a movie scene as wrenching, horrifying and bewildering as ‘the choice’. Even if you’ve seen it dozens of times there’s no way to steel yourself for that scene.

I finally saw this movie now im 40 and holy s*** what a performance, and those languages she just does without fault. When i was a kid i thought "the choice" was that she went back to nathan to die. I never even got the whole daughter stuff until now. Also for some reason i thought she died of some desease at the end. Maybe coz she looked so sick during the camp scenes. I'm happy i finally understand the story now that i'm "grown" next for me is rewatching Bridges of Madison County....guess i remember that one wrong too

Still...over 40 years later people say Meryl was wonderful but the movie was not. I dont understand those comments at all. Im from Buffalo, Irish catholic and saw this movie in Miami Beach while on vacation. Theatre was packed, i got there late but found a seat after two kind people saw me looking and moved over so i could sit on the aisle. After awhile i could hear wimpers and light crying. As we got through the movie it increased to heartbreaking sobs as i realized i was sitting with a huge Jewish group trying to see this movie. I was so taken in by the sadness and heartbreaking moments i shared with them including the couple who moved over for me. Most i noticed were in their 60s, perhaps lived it and lost people they loved. No movie has ever touched me like Sophie's Choice. 😢

Can anyone please explain to me briefly the scene of the book that Meryl and her co-star wanted to film without being repulsive to the audience? Please tell me, if you may. I have not read the book yet, and I am considering it very carefully if I want to read this. I am really intrigued by the story and especially the film, I am hell impressed by Meryl's performance, but on the other hand I am certain somehow that the book will be more heart-breaking and more overwhelming. It will leave me scars, and imagine that I am very young to have kids.

One of the scenes they didn't want to do, because of taste issues is the part where Nathan wants to piss into Sophie's mouth..it's in the book..and I would agree with that being left out. .unnessessary!

Mike Jenkins Oh, my. I have not read the book, so I had no clue. Can't agree more. It could not have been filmed without being repulsive under no circumstances. I am glad they left it out.

It seems to me we cannot ectively weep enough solemn tears for those lives lost at Auschwitz. Something about the story makes me weep the bitterest tears, and from the inmost part of my heart's sorrow. The abhorrent evil of that "choice" I pray no parent ever has to make again. Never again.

Thank you so much for sharing with me an infamous fragment of the Hitler's Nazi horrendous regimen, via the film. It must have been a painful odyssey it is to recollect such memories and to recount them. The crimes and cruelties committed against my sons and daughters, my fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters hurt me deeply, regardless their ethnicity and nationality. In Isaiah 2: 4, Jehovah God, the Creator and Source of life, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, promises: "He will be judge among the nations and will settle matters in relation to many peoples. They will turn their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning shears. The nations will no longer raise their swords against each other and learn no more to wage war." My immediate neighbors are Jews and I am a Jehovah's Witness. Their hearts are superior than pure gold by far. They are extremely kind. The gentleman takes care of my trash can every Wednesday without my asking him to do so. They are lovely human beings, and they are not in need of the smallest improvement.

Bellissima la frase:" where was God"..." where was man"! Vergogna!!!
