Even without the emotionally-draining roles and all the accurate accents, she is still one of the greatest actors I've ever seen. When you see her (in most of her works), it's as if you're having this invisible camera spying through her life, and you won't think that you're watching an actress uttering scripted dialogue.

She’s so grounded. Ugh love it :) One of the most right field actresses we have working today. Seriously. She is very “all there.” It’s incredibly refreshing to see that in artists. When a person has intelligence, sensibility, logic AND a sort of enigmatic creativity.. that is something you can’t look away from. It makes an artist/individual an anomaly. That’s not just speaking on Streep, but every single artist who represents those qualities. It’s very very refreshing. The simple term: well rounded.

Somehow it's good to hear her say that she wouldn't know what to do if she were charged with teaching acting. I have taught dance, but always felt that it wasn't natural or easy for me, and I felt strangely ashamed of that. I used to figure, if I worked as a dancer for years, I should have the tools to teach it. Her statement validates that not everyone is necessarily meant to, or can do both.

Meryl has still retained her youthfulness. I look at her face and i can see her in the Deer Hunter, which is pretty amazing considering when where in our 70s we normally don't look like our youthful selves. I'm 51 and i would date Meryl in a heartbeat!

She speaks about acting in such a thorough, well thought out and simple way. Trully a plentiful video, despite being short. Her approach is very authentic and easy to understand because she knows what she's doing and how to describe it. I especially loved the part when she paralleled acting with children's make believe and how there's no room (or need) for doubt. That is such great advice. There's billions of people and thus billions of characters to play, thus any way you can play them is correct, as long as you fully commit to it, cos that's the human part that they need to have (100% present).

Well, it was more about the feeling of being afraid of getting it wrong than dwelling on her accents as the standout thing in her work or her projects as a whole. Still a question about accent, but not the kind that minimizes the rest of the work. I love her answer though. It was so creative, intuitive, and introspective.

Who knows why opinions differ, but her statement may have been too harsh and could have been said in a different, more nuanced way when describing have she felt personally on the focus of the accent. She stated that "it is like focusing on one color of a painting." Her sentiment about the viewer or journalist ONLY focusing on the accent when it comes to the performance or movie is an assumption and also approaching the topic too literally. It is something that people are fascinated by and that fascination is not intended to dismiss the rest of thecwork.

@@srldwg I am not claiming to be an actress. Since each part is the sum of a whole, the accent is an important piece to discuss. I understood her analogy. I more think that it is so easy or just comes naturally for her to do accents that it seems boring to her.

I just recently saw one of her older interviews and it made me realize that the way she speaks has significantly changed. In the older one she's very soft and almost sounds like Princess Diana. Here her voice is much louder, her inflections much more heightened and expressive.

We are not alive to get validation from others but to be happy, to feel love and peace. When you are a kid you never worry about doing things wrong, you just are and try to have fun!! But of course comes the worry of being rejected by others, losing your job, having no money to pay for your bills... And ultimately dying. Let's live then!! On one hand, I think the question about the accents is a legitimate question! What I want to know though, is how do you prepare? What is your method? Many great actors have their own methods. And on the other hand, I can see how picking apart one's innate abilities is sort of, reductive, for the actor. It can be a hinderance, for me, at least, to over analyze things. For me, I would go out & try to experience the things they did, until I find something that connects me to that person, and I just feel it. I have to know that I'm connecting to the character. Otherwise your performance is all over the place. You have to have continuity with a character. Meryl likes to play characters that she can immerse herself in & literally become them. They aren't always necessarily strong women, but they are interesting women. Like Karen Silkwood. It's very interesting that she thought acting was silly. It can feel that way. How she overcame that so she could immerse herself in her characters is something I'd like to hear.
