MESA/Boogie

4 жыл бұрын

This 2nd Chapter of MESA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration finds Founder and President Randall Smith sharing his perspective on the impact of his landmark discovery, the cascading High Gain preamp and the contribution the MARK I became to guitar amplification. Throughout, numerous Guitar Greats reflect on their first encounter with this game-changing and pivotal MARK I’s performance. Randall also shares the passion that drove him on to continuing refinement throughout the MARK II’s evolution during the 1980s.
In this series of short videos, Randall and iconic guitarists look back and touch on the things that first drew them to the “Family” and share what the amplifiers have done for their playing and their music. From the early inspiration and beginnings in the late '60s and early ‘70s, through the “Big 80s” and Guitar-Culture sea change of the 90s, up through the new Millennium and today, Randall and his team of fiercely passionate “band mates” as he calls them, have contributed every major feature found on modern amplifiers and a universe of iconic Tone to the sound of the electric guitar, changing it forever more.
From inventing the pivotal High Gain Preamp in the first Mark i's, to Footswitchable Modes and Effects Loops in the Mark II's, to Multi-Channel/Multi-Mode Preamps in the Mark III's, IV's and V's and Dual Rectifiers, to the several patented tunable Tube power, wiring and operating class configurations found throughout, the innovation and pioneering spirit has remained at the forefront of the small Northern California Company’s ethic.
Enjoy this up close and personal look into the history of MESA/Boogie with Randall and company highlighting points along a 50-year journey that would lead to MESA's cult status leaving an indelible mark on the sound of amplified guitar and modern music.

However, James did not play a IIC+, he played a IIC++, which is why we still hope someday we will get the real deal artist series tribute amp for the man that has influenced more metal guitarists than anyone else on the planet. It would sell INCREDIBLY well. Please Mesa! Please! Take all that knowledge that Mike B, uses to mod the countless IIC’s and IIC+ circuits mailed in to you guys, and give the world a gift!!!

James has moved from his Boogie amps some time ago. Nowadays it's all AxeFx live and Diezel VH4 in the studio and it's also a reason why I don't like his sound anymore - when he was playing through the Mesa stuff his tone was unmatched from Puppets all through the years ending up with Load / ReLoad era. For Garage inc. he used Wizard amps, good amps with a big price tag.
@Hadouken5150
@Hadouken5150 2 ай бұрын
@@coldbastard6859I don’t think it’s the Diezel sound that you don’t like. He doesn’t boost his amps anymore, that’s the issue. If he put a TS in front of one of those Diezels it would sound amazing. But I agree the IIC+ is the signature Hetfield tone we all know and love. Mesa needs needs to do a true IIC+ reissue of a Hetfield IIC+ signature model. Something one those lines. I’d buy it today if they did.
@coldbastard6859
@coldbastard6859 2 ай бұрын
@@Hadouken5150 I never claimed he boosted his amps and the only time he did boost them was during the Kill'em All/ Ride The Lightning era. And yeah, I don't like the tone of VH4 cause it has way too much low end and way too bloated mids. AxeFx also sounds fake especially when they plug it into that Solid State power section. The real problem with the Mesa amps (especially the mark series) is that they're built for studios and not the road. And repairing them is any techs nightmare, they should do just a reissue of C+ with point-to-point construction - that way they'd be the most sought after amps ever.

So how are you liking it? I still remember the day I got my Mark V 25. Walked into Jams Music for a set of strings. Laughed at the mini head sitting on the counter that was being dusted off before being put on a 2x12. The store owner told me how good it was and I didn't believe him. It took all of 5 seconds to realize I was walking out of the store with a bigger credit card bill than a set of strings.

4:05 I had the same experience with the Mark IV in '91 (but not at the Mesa factory lol). My buddy called me from a mutual friends house and says "you gotta hear this amp Mike just got, it's killer, you're going to want one". "I'll come check it out, but I can't afford something like that right now" I said. I knew two things IMMEDIATELY upon hearing it and playing through it.....I was going to order one.....and I would probably end up divorced. I used to have the Nomad. Not only did they seem to be made with military specs, like with the quality of the switches and such, but the tone was massive in your face and would move air as much clean as dirty. I'm getting on in years now and I don't think I could handle the blunt trauma that a Mesa MK series at least dishes out anymore. I'm a fender guy now.

First heard of Boogie amps reading about Dream Theater, right about the time I started playing guitar. Then in correspondence with Tool’s management, found that Adam Jones used a Rectifier as part of his sound. Mesa has been a part of my tonal consciousness ever since. I am an unapologetic Mesa fanboy. I have a pipe dream of starting a Mesa Mark series and hi-gain Recto collection once my kids are out of school. And yes, even including a Stilletto (such a different but awesome take on the Rectifier lineage - don’t know why there’s so much bad energy from the community about that line). Top it off with a Triple Crown 😁 Good stuff, well-designed and assembled. It truly is the “Spirit of Art in Technology”. So good. Oh, and I’d love to see a revisit of a TriAxis style preamp, but with two parallel sections - 1 with the signature Mark series tones, and one with all the Recto/TC tones - pumping into a dual mono block power amp, with each side optimized for the respective tonal farms. But maybe with a slightly less 80s interface. Yeah I know that would probably cost $6-7k to tuck all that in together, and the switching logic might initiate SkyNet and achieve sentience, but hey, I can dream, right?

Then I lucked out and bought a King Snake which I use to this day in the studio and live.A grrrreat amp.BTW, I hook it up via a cabclone into a Universal Audio 6176 into the Apollo Quad system....now my sound quest concerning tube amps is over....

Whitesnake 87 written and played by "John Sykes" on a Mark IIC + head. Blue Murder album with John Sykes, same Mesa boogie amp. That Whitesnake 87 tone is iconic, still of night - that first finger slide off the e string to hold that G hord and that tone, so full, tight, aggressive and the pinch harmonics. Anthrax album state of euphoria and Persistence of time, that heavy low end fat Mesa crunch. Way before Bogner, deizel, and all the other current boutique amps, the Boogies were delivering the tone.

I bought a Mark III in 1988 not knowing any other artists were using it. The main reason why I chose Mesa is, my guitar teacher said "Marshall is good, but if u want to really shine, get a Mesa Boogie" 😊

CC has used either Keeley modded Metal Zone or Maxon overdrives to further boost their Recto heads. It's more Maxon these days, you could use a Ibanez turbo tubescreamer to get a similar tone (well, same circuit basically).

Yeah saw Kill Switch Engage w Anthrax and KSE's tone was outta this world. Not sure if Anthrax uses Boogies or not. Don't remember if I saw their amps. But Scott Ian's tone was dry.

I own Mesa products. I'm lucky to have lived twenty minutes away. I've had many friends that have worked for them over the years and some still do. I have had for twenty + years a Triaxis into a Strategy 400 Stereo. I have a Mark III top cab with 200 watt Black Shadows in it and a Marshall A with Celestion PE185S speakers in it. It handles all the wattage and sounds incredible. It's built like a tank and it's stupid loud ! Mesa, Go Big or Go Home !!!

I took a chance and ordered a new mark2b. You had to pay for it before they built it. It finally arrived and I could not believe when I fired it up. I own it today. Never bought another amp.

bryan m I can't speak for every one but 7 yrs ago I was bidding on a used Mesa amp on EBay. I called the toll free # to ask about the amp. Got the greatest response I really didn't expect. Answered all my questions very politely. I lost the bid on that amp in the last seconds. Went and bought another amp, a Boogie S O B, . And called them again because I wasn't even sure what it was. Again secretary put on with a tech, Tienan, is his name. And he told me so much about my amp and so convinced me it's a good deal. Now a got a wood and wicker, 60/100, E V 12L speaker, gorgeous amp that probably worth 3 times what I paid. They basically talked me into buying a used amp so they didn't make any money off my deal,so I totally disagree with your opinion. They have taken care of any needs I ever asked about. Great company. Thank you Mr Smith cause quality starts at the top.

For anyone looking to buy a Mesa but having limited funds (like me), I recommend you look for a DC-5. They can still be had for $500-$700 used. I also like it because it is a straight forward two channel amp without all the bells and whistles of the Mark IV. I have played both and the DC-5 was much easier for me to dial in. I get many compliments on my tone. If you want three channels, just use a tube screamer type pedal in front. The amp has enough gain for me by itself. I have owned the DC-3 and DC-2, but I like the extra head room of the DC-5. I played in a band with another guitarist who had a 100 watt Marshall JVM with 2x12 cab and my amp kept up no problem.
