Good comparison with the MIDI-switching! While I like the Rectifier a bit more than you do, I really like your approach to not sugarcoat your opinion! Would be great if others also started to be a bit more honest!

The rectifiers had the gain knob acting in parallel with the bass knob. That's why it becomes "flubby" when pushing the gain or the bass too much. The manual says when you push the gain up, you may turn the bass down. The treble knob acts in the 3rd tube gain stage section, and it acts as a "range master" treble booster, and the presence is the actual "high" treble control. I don't know why mesa boogie uses the same control names for diferent controls. I confess, i'm a rectifier user and is my favorite amp of all, but, is hard to deal with it. The secret is, set all the controls close to "12' o clock" and use less gain and bass as possible, and NEVER use the master volume below 3 and above 6.

Thanks for pointing this out. I remember having the exact same experience with a Dual Recto that I tried out in a music store years ago. Seemed pretty clear to me that something was very wrong but with such simple and familiar controls, I just couldn't see where I was going wrong. Rolling off so much bass is not an obvious thing for anyone. It wasn't until years later that someone pointed out this out to me and the circuit itself behaves VERY differently than a Marshall or whatnot. While I never owned a Recto, I've owned a few Boogies thru the years (Studio Preamp, Quad Preamp and now Mark Five 25). The interaction between controls is part of why Boogies get a bad rap with some people. The Quad was just insane LOL! Can be frustrating if you just want to plug in and play. Reading a manual for an experienced player might feel like a waste of time but at least Boogie prints this sort of thing very clearly in their manuals. I know the internet keeps Euge busy with so many requests - and there would probably be things more exciting than a re-roll on this one - but I'd be very interested to hear the difference in a proper recording environment like Euge has. Either way, still a cool vid - thanks to both of you.

@@dylangadwa3119 Yeah, this is very annoying and everybody do the same mistakes when tweaking every mesa amp for the first time. Even the mark series, that has the PRE GAIN in the "tone stack" panel, but it's not, and the real tone stack is the Graphic EQ. The tone stack panel just shape the guitar tone before the preamp section, and then, the graphic EQ acts as the real tone stack after the preamp section before the power amp. Very confusing. Today I'm very familiar with mesa's amps, a fanboy actually, but, the first time i played in a single rectifier i thought, "where is that chuggy, and nasty tone, i've been listening all my entire life in metal albums?". The same for the first time a played in a jcm800 i thought "why it doesn't sound like zakk wylde?"

Personally I love how a rectifier sounds so massive and 3 dimensional. This gives me. A lot to work with, using a boost and EQ. With that, I can get anything I want. Run the right TS, Fortin boost or any boost and you can get the bass super tight. Not a problem for me. But, mine is also modified to be extra clear. So I know that plays a part.

Great video man. Learned a lot from you about amps and tone. Now, I’m getting better at understanding tone, and can better implement/dial a tone that is in my head. Thanks much and keep doing what you’re doing. I did actually end up buying the 20Watt JCM800 and SD1, partly because of you, and didn’t regret it at all, awesome mean amp! And I am a big thrash metal fan! Though, with JB pickup instead of EMG 81, I needed another 3-6dB boost that I got with MXR 10 band Eq in the front, for certain metal styles that is, like groove metal, and worked perfectly. Keep it up, man!

I have JCM 800, and a 1987x and jtm 45 amp that I can blend the 2 Plexi types so have the ability for stellar tones but I really like the footprint and portability of the mark v. I find that too much gain at a certain point reduces punch, and makes the amp spongy fizzy and saggy sounding. So if you have the gain all the way up, and you want more punch, just try reducing the gain. I use ultra high gain for lead sounds when I want mega sustain, but for crunchy fast rhythms on a low string, too much gain doesn’t help the punch.

I've always been curious of the Mark V 90w head until the mark v 25 became my dream amp after seeing Petrucci demoing it. Maybe the mark v 25 sounds better in you studio but on youtube through my pc speakers, the rectoverb 25 sounds fuller. On the contrary, once the Soldano SLO30 is available in Australia, that will be my main priority.

I have had two rectifiers in two differend occasions and I wanted to like them so much, but I couldn’t get rid of the fizzy top end. I heard it always when playing with the band. With Marshalls that fizz doesn’t exist and also they have the kick and edge I’m looking for in my sound. Good demo, MKV seems interesting, but maybe too complicated for my taste.

See if you could get a 90W Mark V instead of the toy 25w! More of a punch in your face ;-) Its all in the power amps! Thats the difference! Great collection of amps there! I agree. I don't like Recto's either. I never did. They are too boomy, and they do sound muffled. Like there is a blanket in front of the speakers. Again, I gotta say... if you can get your hands on a Boogie JP-2C amp... that is the best thing MESA makes. ( I like Pete Thorn too. Fantastic player, and he knows his gear. He can make anything sound great, so you gotta be careful with his gear reviews! ) PS - I liked your intro song! Your soloing is always so clean. Hej Euge. The Recto-Verb has got a choke, maybe that’s the reason why it sounds softer and react a little bit later to the guitar playing. If this choke does make the sound smoother and filters out the high end, I don’t know. The mini rectifier has not that choke and the sound is more direct in your face. Try that one for a comparison. This is a great point. I've had an ROV25 with two 1x12 mini Recto cabs for a few years. I recently played a Mini Rec and found that it had a slight "rasp" and "snarl" to it that the ROV25 seems to smooth out. Not that this is a bad thing....you just need to put an All-Pedal Slammurai in front of it to get that snarl replaced if needed.

Still watching the video, but... Have had a rev F since the 90s... not a lead amp, but does great rhythm with 808 or TS-9 style pedal. You really need that mid hump, I know plenty do use the SD-1 with it, but I think it's not the best choice. Still, it's a different beast than a 800, and that's a good thing. Lot's of great recordings made with both. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the mark or rectos with EL-84s, although I do like those tubes in my Subway Blues and Blue Angel Mesas. I would love to hear what you could do if you got your hands on a MKIIC+ As always, great stuff.

I use both the Mark V emulation and Rectifier in Line 6 Helix, I genuinely think the rectifier sounds really good when you dial the bass right down. I have it at zero or one. Same as the Mark V. I also push with a tube screamer. Great demo video though. At the end of the day, the mix tracked sounds great.
@samerbata
@samerbata 2 жыл бұрын
@@hardyharhar2261 haha I love Devo. The way I think about it; when it's being mixed you apply low/hi pass filters or eq the bass frequencies out a tad, so for Mesa amps which have a lot of bass (to my ears) I just dial it at zero and work from there. I just find this way I don't need to add much presence and I can let the mids and treble stand out. Do I know what am talking about, I don't think so, but it sounds good to my ears. I may have convinced myself that this the way 😂. I did actually watch a video with Phil X not long ago and he mentioned that he dials the bass back on Marshall amps. It's all about what you like to hear I suppose. 😊

There are few amps that I dislike more than Recto’s….I just don’t like that sound…That little Mark 25 is killer though..love that thing….awesome little amp..I really like the crunch channel and the C+mode….

I find some of the rectifier complaints here and in the comments confusing. I've owned a multi-watt dual for over a year and it's the brightest and meanest amp I have ever played. I've played 5150's, 6505's, a good number of Marshall heads, and the Dual just has this overwhelming amount of high end content that most amps can't match unless their presence controls are dimed. Maybe this might be exclusive to the 3 channels since those are the only rectifiers I have experience with. I still find it weird to hear a rectifier having "a blanket over it" with just how bright they can be especially on the modern mode. Though your rectifier tone also sounds very weird and no like a normal tone I hear in other videos. it sounds more dark and crunchy and rough.

Being that I like Metallica, I always thought that the Mesa Rectifier was the way. But, I don’t like it that much. I think the Mark V is better for that tone. Personally, I got really impressed of the BlueGuitar. After listening to all your comparisons, I feel the Amp1 sounds the best. I only play at home, so considering getting the BluGuitar Amp1.

I never understood the "Metallica = Rectifier", because it wasn't until Load/reload that they started using recs : Black album is all the way IIC+ and Mark IV, and I'm talking about studio use.

I dont't get the idea of "dialing the mids basically off" to achieve the "in your face sound". It's a bit counterproductive in my opinion. I run my dual rec with mids at 1 or 2 o'clock with the bass at 8 o'clock. Tons of uncontrolled bass frequencies on these amps. Presence and treble at 2 o'clock. Boosted with a boss SD-1 there's no blanket in front of the amp. I still prefer the mark V but the rectifier is a crazy agressive amp. Tone is totally subjective but I feel what you say with these settings.

I think with the Recto, you have to really put the mic toward the center of the cone, and as mentioned, keep the Bass low, otherwise its way too farty…

The recto eq is rather counter intuitive… the extreme bass and treble settings actually makes the sound less punchy. Think of it like this, all the power is used to produce the bass, then the treble, and there’s nothing left for the mids. To bring out the best tones, keep the bass low (I.e. around 9 o clock), then bring up the treble around 1 o clock, and mids to taste. The gain also should not be more than 2 o clock. If more gain is required, boost with a pedal.

The EL34s on my EVH 5150III stopped working for whatever reason, I sent it back to the store so they can fix it and meanwhile they let me take one amp home while they fix my EVH, I took the Rectoverb 25 just to test it.... its sounds weird, I can't make it sit in the mix properly, it has weird frequencies, the mids are not there, the punch is not there, everything sounds like a big flat mass of sound... the high end is weird, everything sounds out of place... the clean is beautiful tho.

I don’t like the 25 or 35 watt Mesas. You need 50 or 100 watts, because of the larger iron and power tubes mostly.

@@EugeValovirta230V and with very good attenuators like the Iron Man II or even your oxbox the advantage of the smaller amp is reduced. You can still get 95% or more of the big amps tone now which comes from the big power tubes and transformers but at reduced volumes. Of course nothing like pushing real speakers though

I feel like Rectos lack that high end sizzle, what you might dial in with treble/presence on a Marshall. I tried two Rectos, a Roadster and a Roadking 2. Even with EL34s in British mode, they just couldn’t bring that “burning” quality that Marshalls do so well. I play a Plexi now. Problem solved
