Yes you can. You just have to make sure you write which part of the resistor that is shared between I_1 and I_2 is positive and negative and apply it to get the proper equation.

Explanation about why a source voltage is taken negative is not adequate. Also you have not mentioned about moving direction. Basic concepts about why positive voltage and negative voltage should have been mentioned. Otherwise this just becomes a blid mathematical technique.

If it was setup to equal 0, then it would be -10 and the second would be 50. Since he skipped that step and already added 10 from both sides in the first equation and subtracted 50 from both sides in the second equation. So, he is right in how he did it.
