Do Not Look Down is my favourite song from Meshuggah's new album Koloss. It's a very groovy, heavy piece and really enjoyable to play. With this cover I really wanted to play Tomas's performance note for note. There are so many well placed accents and crashes throughout the entire song and I did my best not to miss any of them. It was very easy to play my own fills and add my own crashes but again I wanted to play exactly what I heard. I set up another set of hats under the ride to solely play open in the various sections so I could bounce around on the main hats with my foot to really sit in the groove. This made the kick pattern slightly harder as it was then to be played all on the right foot.
Hope you all enjoy as much as I have! Feel free to contact me on facebook with any questions.
Cheers Troy Wright

Just start doing it, it's the best way to keep in time and count where you actually are in a track. It's a constant natural click and should be something you work towards with most music you play.

It's a pleasure and a joy to watch you play man! You groove to these complex rythms with such ease. I'm a guitar player, and your videos have helped me alot to grasp the rythmic concepts of many Meshuggah songs. "Do Not Look Down", is hands down the grooviest song of the past decade, and one of my favourite 'shuggah tracks in a long time even though I do rate the vast majority of their stuff highly. I would love to see you play something from Catch 33. Maybe "In Death is Death" and "In Death is Life" as one track?

Don't let the 'metal' tag confuse you, the genius of Meshuggah can be heard from 3:08 to 3:55. Killer groove, killer riff and nothing fancy from Fredrik, just the perfect notes (guitar solo, sort of) complimenting the entire thing. One of my favorite M tunes.

The fact that you keep doing 8th notes with your left foot through the whole song is quite amazing. I don't know why I pointed that out, but it's just a sign that you have an amazing control over your body while playing the drums.

I watch you for like 3 years now and man I'm still amazed for your work you've done into your drumming. You're one of those drummers who does have the sound in the hands-groove-drums.. I should call it "You are the drums" :D I've always enjoyed the fact that you're keeping the groove with the hi hat.... that's like... Holy cow it's just amazing. Great job as always! you are correct, in an interview the members said they improvise a lot of live performances, the thing is, however, 4/4 is the better option because when written down it more clearly shows the rhythmic nuances they implement in their music. for example, in "break those bones whose sinews gave it motion" you could write in 11/8 but it is much more interesting to think of as 4/4 because that highlights the rhythmic "dissonance" as the groove shifts through the phrases.

serious? i hope you've seen all his videos and teachings. He is a great drummer for his age, and he's making quite the name for himself in the drum world honestly. Very precise and creative drummer, and he knows his shit well. Keep up the good work Troy, I love seeing your video's and teachings and enjoy your enthusiasm in teaching people, and I LOVE how you show something that can help us less accomplished drummers achieve the beat you are teaching (i.e. your bleed-meshuggah vid).

I'm not knocking Troy, but I've found that if you break this down and take out all the cymbal embellishments, this is actually one of the easiest Meshuggah drum parts to learn once you've memorized the song. However, Troy kept constant quarter notes on the hi-hat the entire time, and used cymbal embellishments. So, excellent cover as always, dude.

Yeah right, it's one of these Meshuggah songs that are more "groove efficient", to quote Tomas, than their other more physically or/and concentration demanding tracks. But in the end they kick ass whatever they do, hah! 57 days to go till we step into The Violent Sleep of Reason.
