Ive been playing for 20 years and ZZ Top's "Just Got Paid" is still one of my favorite things to play. The intro riff is just plain old fun. It's good for practicing alternate picking as well.

Yo, you're actually playing really well considering it's not been long since you've started. I'd recommend Deception from TesseracT, the breakdown riff is the best, and it's not a hard song overall, just the timing and stuff. The verse is 2 4 2 2 (x2) 2 2 4 2 (x2) 2 (2 | 4) 2 2 (x2) (((The (2 | 4) means the first repetition goes 2 2 2 2 (((((same pattern as the beginning of the riff but with a 2 instead of a 4))))) and the second is (2 4 2 2)))) 2 2 4 2 (x2) And then you repeat. I recommend you to read these patterns while listening to the song slowed down a bit. If you don't get what I mean then sorry lol

I find the song to be really badass, especially the first half and that atmospheric slow part that just makes me feel like I'm on top of a hill watching a city on fire. And even though the chugging end with Jens vocals is sick, I feel as if there's missing a climax, a change, or a breakdown. Something like taking up the speed like that part in "ObZen" would've done the trick. But I would've been cool with them doing the same thing as they did with Straws Pulled At Random to this song with that slow atmospheric bit.

Hey Drew! I had the same feelings listening to it for the first time. Now I'm on my 18th replaying of this track and slowly yet suddenly started to really get into it. I believe that we will have similar experience. Also checkout and try to analyze the rapping of vocals, lyrics . Jens truly is unbelievable for his age! His voice even gets stronger and angrier :D As you listen to it, your mind collects the structures and patterns, then automatically combines it together and you shake with the shape of the song.

So my thoughts: instead of a guitar solo we got this kind of atmospheric part you can say , which itself sounds absolutely great and the transition into and out of that part sound just right to me, however it felt a little off not having a guitar solo or something like that in a song that heavy and groovy. feels a little like Born in Dissonance without guitar solo yea just...off. not much else negative i can say tho. insane rythmical arrangement (no surprise, its meshuggah afterall), really nice riffs+vocals and the atmospheric part sounds really good even though it might have not been the optimal choice for this song but hey, noone can be perfect not even meshuggah even though theyre really close to it^^ for me its a solid 8/10

Im certain y'know this anyway lad, but when getting the easier riffs down, keep playing along to a metronome. I made an arse of my practicing so many times by trying again and again to play something like Master of Puppets without slowing it down, and working it up pace by pace. Its like running, or weight training. You need to be at a good tempo thats relaxed and cool with you, then add more tempo when you feel ready to practice the riff a bit faster. Master of Puppets is like, the "Holy Grail" of the Downstroke practice. I actually gave myself a form of tendonitis akin to tennis elbow trying too hard to practice and play it faster than I could each night one time! 😂😂😂😂 I felt like a right aul' muppet, and had to go back and tackle it slower.

I feel like this will be a born of dissonance type song for this album. Little underwhelming at first but after the album drops it’ll become one of those groovy hits that you just keep playing in your head at work. The drums as always change the feel just enough throughout to make you go “wait a minute what?”

I'm also intrigued by how these new tracks carry traces of their earlier music. I swear this one makes me think of Combustion at times. The Abysmal Eye had hints of Catch-33 and Obzen's best vibes. You know what other influence I just realized? The more melodic brutality of Gojira. I knew it reminded me of something.

I agree that the climatic moment was a little underwhelming but maybe this track's purpose is to be an interlude to something bigger and better. 🤷 The first half of this song was my favourite and indeed kicks ass and will be great live. Overall I would give this song 8.1/10 whereas The Abysmal Eye was like 8.6/10. These singles have been solid so far but I think the upcoming album will probably have a bunch of amazing vintage Meshuggah tracks in store. The Violent Sleep Of Reason by Meshuggah is indeed an amazing album to check out before Immutable. In fact the title track is one of my favourite Meshuggah songs of all time. You can see how they sounded in their previous album compared to the upcoming album which would be ideal. Oh and your guitar skills are actually suprisingly good already 😮

Meshuggah is really awesome but very difficult to listen to. The monotonous riffs can be brain frying, but they sound so huge and awesome. I still listen to them but only for small amounts of time, my brain gets worn out. I have seen them live like twenty years ago when they wrote more thrash type songs and they were amazing. I don’t know if I would enjoy their live show as much now, just my opinion and others may disagree. Destroy erase improve and Chaosphere were my favorite albums!!

My favorite band of all time is and always will be Nirvana. 30 years listening to them this October. Their songs are super catchy and are often a gateway into learning songs. As a teen in the mid90s, it was a thrill to get those riffs right!, be it Teen Spirit itself. Nailing a song, knowing the chords yer playing, and songs like that can then get easier to work out and play along to. An obvious one in metal is Metallica's Enter Sandman. It uses a "palm mute" chug in the verse with a nice easy chord change to work up yer downpicking and precision in the practice of it. The main riff itself is a great piece to practice, as it works skills like single sting picking, and palm muted power chords. Its one of their easier songs to get under yer hands and utilizes things that, are essential in metal playing. And, since a lot of metal is in the same key of E, its fun working out lots of other bands riffs that sound like other songs and incorporating them together.

I didn't like Abysmal Eye any more with each listen; this one gets better every time I hear it, as Meshuggah usually does for me. These two songs sound to me like leaning a bit toward industrial, the way they don't vary much from the main riff. Not as adventurous as previous songs/albums.

Bro I felt the same way. Jens is a beast. It's kind of nice to have a song where he really stands out. It's a bit older school Meshuggah style vocal. Got more rhythmic attack on it and his tone is just fierce. Overall I'm noticing a very narrow focus on both of these singles. Some cool variations in there but pretty much dead on target with what it's aiming to achieve. This leads me to believe the album will be best appreciated as you go track-by-track all the way through and the whole picture will come together. In regards to that breakdown that you felt didn't deliver, I can definitely hear that too. It honestly felt like they should have went into one of those old-school floydian interludes that they used to do. DEI style. Get jazzy with it, bust out the trippy thordendal solo.

I thought the same thing! It's like, coming out of that nice break, there's no big "hit" for us to sour milk face out to. It all seems to blend, which is fine, I guess. But like you say, a bit underwhelming because us as listeners; as huge fucking fans, want it to provide goosebumps and it's just a pretty easy 3 over 4 thing with no big cymbal to bang us into it. I'm complaining on an entirely different realm here, I gotta keep in mind. I probably expect too much, like they're going to invent a new chug every time they pick up their guitar. Haha Still bass ass as fuck and smokes anything I know of that's been available to hear since, I dono, 2016?
