Phil, I am convinced there isn't a piece of wood, no matter the shape or size that you can't turn into a beautiful bowl or piece of art. That you always leave as much of the bark as possible is an added bonus. I think this bowl is beautiful, as is all of your creations.

I really like this video. I volunteer in a public shop where I manage the lathe. People are always coming to me wanting to turn unmilled wood. many of them have never turned before. Mesquite is a good hardwood for this type of turning. With softer wood, there are going to be more problems with chipping bark and flying apart. This type of lathe work is advanced turning.

A word about Abranet: I've found several plus' to it. 1. If when sanding it clogs you can blow it out or let it dry and shake it out. 2, If you're wanting a very high gloss shine on Lacquer or an Acrylic lightly sand the finish with four hundred and up then a auto polish and Oh Boy!! I don't use it exclusively but it does have it's place... Rob

Having spent time in TX and having many friends living there, I have the opportunity to get mesquite pretty regularly. I love mesquite for turning. I call it Texas walnut because the grain color reminds me of black walnut. It's just a gorgeous wood for what many Texans consider to be a trash tree. It has the added benefit of being a great meat smoking wood. You can use your turning shavings in your smoker for great tasting smoked meat.
