Not following recipes with specific quantities and ingredients is the way to go for goulash, stews, curries, tagines and so on. I've cooked hundreds over the years and every single one is different because of the amount you can vary them. It's a great hearty meal and the mess tin is perfect for it. Nice one!

Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. Yeah this was my first mess kit monday episode, it was fun and maybe I'll do some more. I'll check out your videos. These kits are still widely available online if you shop around, you can find them in both used and new condition, and with or without the utensils. I've only used it a couple of times but loving it and so far I highly recommend it. Thanks again for checking it out!

Actualy JNA ( Jugoslovenska Narodna Armija - Yugoslav People Army) kit was not intented for cooking in it ! Rather for serving meal cooked in field kitchen . Kit was usualy worn on belt , and use was following : open pouch , take kit out; remove bottle and put it back in pouch ; open kit , and attach plastic bowl on craddle / latch . Take ( so created) handle with palm od the hand from below; end grab small cup with fingers . So , now , you have all kit in one hand ! It is smart to use hand which is on side where serving line is , to speed up serving ( othervise, cook will give you few words!) . What was filled in 3 bowls ? In big plastic- soup; in metal one - main dish . In small cup- some salad ( of course , sour from can!) . Bred - in other hand . And , about paprikas you make - looks good ( you have right recepee) but it looks more like , another typical JNA dish - Bosanski lonac ( Bosnian pot) . Mix of all leftovers of vegetable, some fat beef and potato. Originaly , it is excelent dish ( also very good for cooking in nature ) , but in JNA we also use a nick-name DRNCH ! And DRNČ in fact , is military acronym for Armamamnet cleaning detergent ! So , you can imagin taste . But, some cooks was real Chef’s preparing it spectacularly !

Thank you so much for checking out my video and for your excellent comments. Very interesting info on the mess kit and its use. Oh I imagine some of those chefs could work magic with just a few ingredients, while others just cooked up some disgusting DRNCH! As for my recipe, yes I knew I was not able to make it exactly like the original, but I did the best I could while keeping it simple. It turned out very tasty.

Great bike trek, looks like Hike with Mike will be emerging from the swamp any minute :P Sweet looking kit and great recipe to christen your new (old) kit. Your cup appeared to be a lot deeper than my traditional US canteen cup. That came out great, I wanted a bite.

That looked real good, and usually you dont need to measure amount of each ingredient you put in there. But it doesnt need to be made for gatherings and parties, it can be made as standard meal and its often made(at least thats how my mom does it) during the weekend there for no need to cook during the week.

It looks like the weather is pretty nice there. I like seeing the bike in action. A very fitting meal to break in the cook set! That looked great, and I am not just saying that!! I think this is something I would like, it looked very tasty. I liked the addition of the peppers. i really liked this video and would enjoy seeing you do more of them Thanks for sharing this recipe with us! I am really going to try it out!

Thank you, my friend. I have actually eaten a lot of dishes from that part of the world: Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Turkish. Their food is mostly simple, yet hearty and a bit on the spicy side. I know you like spicy foods, as do I. I think you would enjoy some of their dishes, the Serbs in particular and very "meat and potatoes" kind of people. Anyway, I couldn't resist trying to cook a Balkans style recipe for the first use of the Yugoslavian mess kit. Now that it's properly broken in, I guess I'm free to do what ever I want LOL! We have had some wild temperature swings this winter, but that is kind of typical for us here in the southern mid-Atlantic area. Its pretty common for us to have freezing temps and snow storm one day, and then sunny and 60s degrees the next day. It was great to take the bike out there, I'm riding it every chance I get. Thanks so much for checking out the video, my friend. I hope you'll try this recipe, let me know how it turns out if you do.
@LeeRalph100

I have never had that style of a dish before, it sounds pretty good. Nothing wrong with meat a potatoes at all...adding a bit of spiciness is a plus LOL I am glad you chose this dish to make. I would like to try something like this. I want you to know, this has been a big motivation to me to try and do a bike to get more exercise. and I have a feeling this will be big inspiration for others to get out and give it a try!
@SmellNRoses

Lee Ralph I had many motivations for wanting to get into biking, one of them was for the exercise too. Even though I’m pretty active at work and I hike hundreds of miles every year, my first time on the bike I realized I would be using muscles I never knew I had and the cardio is as intense as hiking up a steep mountain. So I’m hoping this bike will be a fun way to get more exercise. It’s also going to open doors to new kinds of adventures, like riding trails that I would not care to hike on foot and also bike camping. Stay tuned!

Thanks, man. I appreciate your kind words, and thanks so much for watching! Yeah this dish was a bit complicated for small portion and in the backwoods, but I insisted on the idea of the first meal being a Balkans style dish in this Serbian mess kit. Thanks so much for watching and commenting, my friend. Yeah I'm loving this bike, been getting it out every chance I get. It's already opening a lot of new opportunities, this spot I was in for this video was really awesome and I would not have gone there without the bike...five miles on a fire road is not something I'd typically care to do on foot, but it was fast, easy, and fun on the bike, and I got to see a remote section of the swamp and millpond. I've only used this mess kit a couple of times but I really like it so far. I plan to get a lot of use out of it. Thanks again for checking it out!

Looks good. How much fuel did it take to cook this up?
@SmellNRoses
@SmellNRoses 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I was running a 110g fuel canister that was only about half full when I started, when I finished I could tell I had used a lot of fuel but still enough in the bottle for probably another meal. Sorry I can't be more specific. I using it with a MSR Pocket Rock stove, air temps in the upper 40s with no wind. The pot in this set is very heavy and takes a while to really heat up, but once it gets hot it didn't take a lot of flame to keep the temperature high.
