WRT parts you think you won't see again, I think you're like me Gary. Although not visible on the complete model /I/ would know they're not there. Especially if I put unused parts in a spares box they would be a reminder I hadn't fitted all the parts of that model. Besides it's good practise and minimises the chance of accidentally missing something out and/or realising too late that it /is/ visible after all.

I notice the nose only has 2 gun ports, the upper 2 faired over - which I think was standard when carrying bombs - but there are of course 4 cannon... Looks lovely though.
@ronaldbyrne3320 Жыл бұрын
Yes you’re right, they left out the two upper cannons in this bomber version of the Me 262. This fact is an omission in the kit instructions, an area that Hobby Boss needs to buck up on. Other than that, a lovely kit.

Very nice work Gary. Not Criticising, but the Me 262A-2a generally only carried the lower pair of 30mm cannon. It was primarily tasked as an attack/bomber so had to save weight and omitting the upper cannons was needed in order to safely carry two 500KG bombs - Those two upper cannon and their ammo amounted to just over 300KG gross weight.... So the bomber was unwieldy, even with them removed, but not as badly as it might have been. The upper ports were faired over with a small oval plate of airframe aluminium. (In the 2 seat nightfighter in 1945 the 4x30mm cannon were supposed to be replaced by 2x 20mm MG151 so would have had 2 long barrels protruding into the aerial's space on the nose. As only a few were built, in something of a hurry, references do show at least one retained the 4x 30mm arms fit. Where I live in NZ the HB Me262 is between 1/2 and 2/3 of the retail prices of the Tamiya kit of the same aircraft, and HB have done most if not all the variants as well. I agree that it is really a superb little kit. Bonus - IF you get the 1/48 Amusing Hobby kit of their Me262 HGIII, then parts of the HB kit can be used in that also eg NOSE WEIGHT! (sometimes with minor adjustments.) The HGIII was the proposed High Speed (Hoch Geschwindigheit) variant, with increased wing sweep angle and engines buried within wing-root fairings, like the DH Comet, only twin engined! And it would have been a VERY Pretty plane!

Yes, I did wonder with the nose covering only having the two gun ports, but just blindly followed the instructions like a good boy...!

Very nice . I reckon I must have a dozen or so Me 262s of varying flavours but yet to purloin one of H/Bs. If I may , Molotow Chrome pens are very convincing for 'chrome/polished metal' finish and perfect for aircraft telescopic undercart oleos(the shiny bit!) . They can be dirtied with a lick of wash to represent grease . I also use the Chrome pens for reflective pieces like mirrors and landing/recognition lights . All the best mate . Pete
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
I've used those pens for light backing and stuff but on an oleo is inspired! Just tried it on the Mossie and it stands out even though the rest is (as yet unweathered) aluminium. Brilliant tip, many thanks!

I think it was Eric ‘winkle’ brown said that an Me 262 with British engines as in the meteor you would of had a formidable aircraft the 262 engines only had a 10 hour life span before major work ,great work Gary Mark 😊😊
@gleggett3817 Жыл бұрын
I've seen 10-25 hours for the Jumo 004 suggested; longer if flown with care. The issue being the use of low grade steels due to lack of additives such as nickel, cobalt and molybdenum. The Welland engine as used on Meteor was nearly a foot wider than a Jumo so perhaps a Metrovick axial would have fitted.
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Indeed Winkle thought it probably the best fighter of the war. I think he also recognised that axial flow engines like those in Germany would ultimately have development potential way beyond the centrifugal flow engines like the Derwent, and they had significant drag advantages too. Now, a Junkers Jumo with British steel for the turbine blades...

Hobby Boss has a winner here, judging from your build Gary. The rest of its stable of Me 262 kits bears looking into as well. The instructions not telling you to leave off the two upper cannons is the only shortcoming in this kit. Looking forward to the next Monday Matters and until then, here’s an Imperial thumbs up 👍🏻.

I had a friend who was the first civilian owner of an F-86 Canadair Sabre. He eventually sold it to an American. When going through customs from Vancouver, they wouldn't release it because it ha six .50 cal..machine guns in the nose. Customs called my friend and asked him why the guns couldn't be removed. He replied that because they were all forward of the centre of gravity, if the guns were removed and it took off, it would sit on its tail until it ran off the end of the runway. Perhaps your Me-262 had inert cannon in the nose for weight purposes?

WRT guns they're modified of course from the original designs for soldiers to fire manually. As soldiers were/are mostly right handed the ejection ports are on the right too. Only a couple of weeks ago I saw a TV drama where an officer stopped a soldier about to fire left handed and angrily pointed out he'd have got a faceful of lead.
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Technically he'd have got a faceful of brass? Back in the Lee-Enfield days you were right handed or right handed. Operating the bolt with the left hand was way too slow for comfort! I'm not entirely certain about this, but I have seen M16s operated either right or left handed, so presumably the cases eject upwards?

The HobbyBoss 1/48 Me 262 kits are very nice alternative to Tamiya. For me they represent an ersatz Hasegawa kit in fit, parts count and detail. Their pricing is the best bit. I built 80373 their A-1a/U-5 variant.

Seeing how fast you assembled that ME262, I'm amazed the Germans didn't make more of 'em. If they just employed, say, 1000 workers, to build these all day, they would have had enough to win the war. Especially if they skipped the paint job, and left off the decals. Truly baffling, if you think of it.
