Really nice build! Ive been building kits since 1958. I've NEVER seen a 1/48 kit with complete gun mounts/supports, ammo belts, chutes, positionable breeches, panels and case ejection guides. What a manufacturing tour de force! Magnificent!

That model you have done has great detail to it. Looks great. Some Me 163 Trivia. Between the 90mm thick, armor glass support rods was a small narrow defrost vent on ours. On the armor nose cone has a 6 O'clock tiny air intake which sent fresh cool air across the nose cone generator brushes, then that hot air was deducted up to the defrost vent between the armor glass supports to the canopy. There was no valve to shut off this defrost system. The intake air on the nose cone was just off the 6 O'clock position, they might have been in a hurry putting that duct in? Also behind the pilots seat there was the automotive looking critical Mach warning horn. And our pilots head rest was round. And that tail wheel assembly was all stamped made in Italy on all it's parts. The Me 163 electrical ground power plug sure looks like a close match to the ones used on the Me 109's and other German planes at the time. : )

A rocket plane that became a glider. Blimey, when I was a member of the Air Training Corps, many, many moons ago, all we had was a winch at the far end of the airfield! 'Wings level!' 'Full and free movement of controls' 'All clear above and behind?' 'Take up slack!' 'All out!!' WOOOSH! Ha ha, happy times. Another great build, Gary. Looks fab.

@@garys_stuff Good days indeed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Gas Patch are Greek in origin. If this is going to be the calibre for their future releases, then I'm seriously impressed.

That’s a lovely job you did there, Garry. Yellow can be an awful colour to paint. I’d heard on a podcast that painting the surface pink helps so I tried it. Vallejo Game Air squid pink down first really does work well! Next time you paint a surface yellow...consider giving it a crack. Your enthusiasm for this build is quite contagious All the best.

its amazing Gary that us modelers always place our seat lap straps on the seat , when i served in the R.A.F lap straps were always under the seat , the logic being tight space , bulky aircrew , scramble with seconds to get airborne the straps would be under your bum which if you try this method in your car is awkward as you have to lift yourself up and believe me in a tight cockpit dont work , under the seat lap straps were normal for all ww2 fighters as again in a scramble situation , in a tight Spit or hurricane with a parachute on your bottom the straps would be under the seat , anyway just thought i would mention it , keep up the brilliant work, of course the shoulder straps if not outside the cockpit then a fitter/rigger would assist you with those
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
I suspected that they were put to one side by the fitter as you got in, but in a cramped space even that would be impossible! It's a very good point and one to explore further I think...

Get the printed Komet "carrier" tractor by Gaspatch: It is the first ever mass produced printed kit, and it is even more amazing than the kit it is meant to carry. The Gaspatch Komet corrects many errors of the Dragon kit (particularly the wing span!), but the Dragon canopy is just a tiny bit better in shape, and fits the Gaspatch model perfectly, even in the closed position(!). Very happy with mine. Dragon's kit had an awful "pinching" behind the nose cone, which was near impossible to fix neatly. The Gaspatch Komet was really a badly needed model in 1/48.

In 1962 my brother Douglas (1951-2023) would have spent 3 days building and painting the Komet and then he would cover the airplane in petrol (lighter fluid) and toss it from whatever high place was available. Film that! Just like the real Me163 - KABOOM! How does Winkle live through this stuff?

It’s a little gem. I built the Dragon Me-163 years ago and this one seems to have loads more detail. I’ve never seen a Gaspatch kit before this, definitely grabs my interest. Going to look for it. Thank you for the introduction Gary.

AFAIK it's Gaspatch's first full injected molded kit. They are known for accessories like turnbuckles and very finely detailed guns. They also have a 3d printed Scheuch Schlepper now; the modified agricultural mina tractor with a transport system to collect the comet after landing.

What doesn't come across in the video is just how small this aircraft is, and what a good job GasPatch have done of recreating it. It is far beyond the Dragon/Revell kit I have at the very back of my display cabinet in terms of clean crisp detail. You took a silk purse and gilded it beautifully, only possible crisis is if the fin was repainted to allow RAF fin flashes, wouldn't something similar have happened to the upper surface crosses?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Guess it depends if the roundels are big enough to cover the crosses? I think the upper ones were ones that look like four white 'L' shapes without the black cross.
@stevesstuff1450
@stevesstuff1450 Жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff : Yes, they would have been the 'L' shaped outline crosses on the upper, and lower wings, and on the fuselage too, but the roundels would have covered those easily enough! And with the RAF painting the undersides yellow on captured aircraft there was no worry with underwing crosses! You did a fantastic job with this one Gary; a lovely little kit of a viciously dangerous aircraft for the pilot and ground-crew! 🫢 A great build there.... 👍

Wow Gary! Your obvious enthusiasm speaks volumes for the quality of the kit. You’ve got me in a quandary now. I have the Meng 1/32 scale version in my stash. Do I need a 1/48 one as well?
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Can't help you there as I've not made the Meng one, but this Gaspatch one is a proper beauty. I know I keep saying how Airfix has upped its game of late, and I stand by that, but the moulding of this kit, the fit and finish provided is just on a different level. When you think you can get this in the UK for around £35 it is amazing value IMHO.

Good work Gary! One comment, since this is an RAF Test article post-war, the yellow undersides would have been an RAF trainer yellow, and not the RLM specified yellow

What a great looking kit Gary, lovely looking finish to it. Do I detect growing liking for photo etch? Personally I am not a lover of it, mainly because the carpet monster seems to end up with most of it. Or it could just be my clumsy fingers!

which glue do you find more suitable for gluing already painted parts? extra thin? cyano?...
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Depends on the part - but smaller parts tend to be tiny dab of normal cement or a dab of extra-thin. CA doesn't work on painted surfaces (home-painted ones that is, factory pre-painted PE parts are OK).

Hi Gary, now I hear all your pleasure with this kit and yet I feel it’s one of your least successful builds particularly the cockpit and the PE. It seems to me that you got a fair bit of the painting, in terms of when, wrong? It is so small Gary and so much detail, could you imagine this in 1:72? Good video as always and I did enjoy the build and you’ve made me want to have a go!! Keep it up mate Bob England
