This is a wonderful performance of Handel's masterpiece. Bravo to the chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor! I always appreciate it when the soloists are able to sing with precise English diction, especially in this particular oratorio, as well as avoid unnecessary and distracting body movements when singing. Three of the soloists were successful in this regard. I especially enjoyed the lovely vocal timbre, pure vowels, and elegant singing of the handsome CT Alexander Chance, the gorgeously sung arias of soprano soloist Julia Doyle and the rousing, exciting rendition of "The Trumpet Shall Sound" by bass soloist, Roderick Williams.

Das relativ geringe Ensemble der Ausführenden bringt die musikalischen Feinheiten dieses Meisterwerks erst so richtig zur unerwarteten Geltung. Alle Mitwirkenden sind vom Anfang bis zum Ende total gefordert und unterziehen sich dieser Aufgabe mit überraschender Bravour: Dafür sei ihnen samt und sonders besonderer Dank eines begeisterten Zuhörers aus Tirol ausgesprochen, der in seiner Jugend selbst als langjährig aktiv Ausübender bei den "Wiener Sängerknaben" diese überragende Leistung richtig einzuschätzen weiß. Bravo!

Nice! I just found this version and LOVE the clean crisp style and playful dynamics. I love WATCHING real people getting wholly into the music and physically expressing the performance with their motions instead of just listening to a CD. I believe Handel's musicians would have been very expressive. It's a performance. As a trumpet player myself I say hats off to the 2 on very difficult natural trumpets and especially the soloist for the endurance challenge of The Trumpet Shall Sound!

This performance is a standout triumph among a vast field of the most accomplished musicians & transfixing operatic soloists ever assembled in world history, all of whom have rendered great justice to the most dramatic, miraculous, compelling, melodic, inspiring and uplifting assembly of tunes ever composed by the greatest and most intelligent exponent of complex counterpoint (by far) who has ever lived, topped off by such appropriate facial expressions exhibited by each of the virtuoso soloists, appropriate to each of the most profound and magnificent libretto pieces ever put together, with such obviously genuine feeling that you've got no doubt each one of them is seemingly conscious that they were brough into this world for this very purpose 😍🤩❤👍 ... Alexander Chance is really the best, although everyone has performed too little of the oratorical artistry of the performance for the audience. this is not a studio recording. A temple oratory requires at least a little dedication and spirituality. But the artists' diction is perfect and forces us to reflect on the history of Jesus, our Savior. An optical illusion beginning 9:50 one of the male choristers appears to have his hand on bass in front while singing 'And the Glory of the Lord'. It is of course the hand of the bassist. Small picture gives the odd impression for just a second when arm and hand appear to belong to the chorister. 😅

My benchmark for any Messiah is the couplet of 'and He shall feed his flock/come unto me all ye that labour'. The counter-tenor is delightful, but the soprano, too many flourishes....

Great interpretations and tempi, excellent baroque band and soloists. The choir was slightly underpowered & didn’t know the work that well, so had their heads buried too much in their scores and they would have benefited from a session with a English singing/diction coach to place their vowels more clearly and accurately and improve their attack.

Schäfer's English is mostly superb. There must always be certain compromises between spoken vs. sung English. I agree with, e.g., making short "u" more open; more like short "o". However, I must protest when he sings long "i" like short "o". Sorry, but long "i" really must be a diphthong: "highway" must be sung "HAH-ee-weh", not "HAH-weh". Interestingly, I do not notice this issue in Chance's singing.

thanks for sharing. wonderful rendition of my favorite piece of all the music on this planet. teqnically I have just little issues to say but I won't say them this time. It dosen't worht it. graet work everybody. although. the 1st trumpet. I know there are a lot of rest and his participation is little compared to the rest of the players, nevertheless. you should show respect not just for your fellow artists but for the place you are in. A church. a place of pray. crossing your arms and bending the head as sleeping is disrespectful.In the other hand great posture and behavior form 2nd trumpetist; it's like RIGHT WAY/ AND WRONG WAY to sit in a concert. despite this kind of demeanour the whole performance was delightful. congratulations to all. Artists, director, producers and camera director. P.S. I would very much like a more vivid performance form de countertenor. A little more of feeling, a little more human wormth maybe?.
