Lionel Messi doesn't perform with Argentina the way he does with FC Barcelona? Well, it is true. Because individually he performs better for Argentina. Messi plays like 60-70 matches with Barca in a year when only 4-5 or 6 with Argentina. Yet many of his best dribbles, passes and goals are from his Argentina games. Around 15 out of top 50 goals of Messi will be with Argentina. 4-5 of Messi's top 10 dribbles are with Argentina. The best curve goal of Messi was with Argentina (Iran) , the best chip / lob goal of Messi was with Argentina (Mexico) , possibly the best free kick of Messi was with Argentina (USA) , many of his best solo goals were with Argentina , his ONLY under the wall free kick was with Argentina (Uruguay) . I remember his chip goal against Mexico back in copa america 2007 so well.. it was the first game i watch for Leo (as I only saw him on KZbin prior to that). anyway, due to time difference where I live, I had to stay up until 4:00 a.m. in a school night, and man, it was so worth it, that goal was a pure peace of art I could just hang on my wall. it was a brilliant choice of finish, an impossible to predict kind of goal, he became my favorite star ever since and I started watching him regularly with Barca right after that tournament, I simply fell in love with his talent. I honestly prefer to watch him plays with Argentina as he get more freedom to perform his magic compared with barca where it is more systematic and technical, and you have proved it with statistics.. oh and great vid, thanks for posting ;)

La diferencia entre la Selección y el Barcelona es muy sencilla.. y no entiendo como los tecnicos que han pasado por argentina no se han dado cuenta.. Higuain has had many similar one-on-one situations over the years, and has missed all of them. My point is that Maradona won that World Cup because he had strikers who could convert the chances he created. Messi doesn't have that luxury.

A very common theme of Messi's career is: play very well and probably more consistently for his country than his club, but still be the scapegoat. 2011 Copa America was a great example where his dribbling was absolutely on point v Bolivia, his play making was the best it's possibly ever been v Costa Rica and he was by far the best outfield player on the pitch v Uruguay. A couple of those probably rank in his top 10 games ever for Argentina yet he went home and got tore into by his own fans and the media. The Copa America final 2016 Messi actually had a very good game. 3-4 excellent dribbles and he created something like 4 or 5 chances too. Yet all people remember from not only the game but an incredible tournament, is his penalty miss and him retiring practically at the full time whistle. Football can be very unfair at times.

This is what I don't understand, even though they didn't win, it wasn't Messi who lost the final but Argentina. Messi always had great tournaments and finals and he is the reason they made it to 3 consecutive finals. Just because he doesn't win his whole tournament performance is forgotten. Whereas for example Ronaldo, who had a good Euro but not the best performance, is called a better player for Portugal even though the whole team had a big part in it (especially in the final). Remember the Copa America final of 2015, where Messi was the ONLY one who scored a penalty for Argentina in the shoot-out. Whether he scores or not, his teammates need to step up aswell to win it, why aren't we talking about Arturo Vidal despite him missing aswell? Because his teammates saved him, for Argentina if Messi scores they can't win, let alone if he doesn't. Also talking about how he got treated by the people back then and how strong he came back and has shown them a point now (they finally see how bad Argentina performs without Messi) is amazing. Messi has more pressure than most top-players have together, still he performs better than anyone else.

A 9+ minute long video of him just dribbling past by 3 or more players is simply amazing - not to mention this is only his national team feats. Plus he's maintained this quality of skills through out his career( there are a ton of dribbles in this video from 2015/2016). While some players try doing robotic looking unnatural not to mention unnecessary "skills" to look talented, they require penalties to beat teams such as "Poland" 😉. There seems to be a huge misunderstanding of what football is... Football is a group sport, it's about generating collective dynamics, it's about making 11 players breath and move as one; there has to be an indestructible bond between each and everyone of the teammates that turns the group into a single compact force... And Lionel Messi does not represent that: on the contrary, his playing style is unfortunately all about individualism. He is supremely talented and skillfull, yes; he is an historical figure in regards to assists and goalscoring, yes; he is a tremendous threat to all defences in the world, yes... But he is not a team player, in the sense that his presence in his teams does not have the effect other fantastic players had: Pele, Cruyff, Platini, Francescoli, Zidane, Beckenbauer, Zico, Laudrup, just to name a few, they all had this absolutely positive influence on their teammates; their teammates felt confident, supported, involved in the game. If you take a look at the Argentinian team of recent years, they actually look as if they were Messi's employees (more than his teammates)... On the other hand, if you take a look at the Chilean team of recent years, they are one for all and all for one, every second of every match: they all defend, they all attack, they all run their asses off, they help and cover eachother anytime, they are all about sacrifice and pace, solidarity and sportsmanship. They are certainly not the most skilled, but they are a solid team made out of 11 commited team players.

If Messi isn't a team player, I don't know that you can say there is one. He consistently drops back and links with teammates and is constantly setting up goal scoring opportunities for others. Unfortunately Gonzalo Higuain has missed some crucial chances in the last three finals and that has cost them big. If Messi actually does retire from Argentina then I highly doubt they'll find the same kind of success that they've had in recent years because they'll be missing the one guy that brings everyone else together in the attack.

Well, that is exactly the misunderstanding: that because you have a supremely skillfull and fast player in the team, making great passes and scoring goals, that obviously makes him a team player... And it's not like that. It is like that on the sheet, statisctically speaking, but on the pitch there is absolutely no magic bond between Messi and his Argentinian teammates. Watch the games man, so many times they leave Messi alone instead of helping him even though he has 3 man with him. Ofcourse he then will go for the dribble and many times it works and he finds a teammate. Watch the last final how he creates space for Mercado, but Aguero tries to score from an impossible angle instead of passing it. It's how the team performs, if that was Suarez he would pass the ball.

I think one of the main problems with Argentina is that all of Messi's teammates EXPECT him to be super selfish and just keep going until he loses it (Argentinian soccer is often about the show-off ball-hog maestro), so when he finishes a bursting run into a dangerous area **and then plays a perfect through-ball** all his teammates are caught flat-footed.
