To the person who said 'I don't understand why business meetings aren't done at work... etc.": Did you forget people work from home, have businesses they run, from their homes? Being in a PUBLIC place like a restaurant is actually far more safe than conducting business in your place of residence. Not everyone has an office or meeting area in their homes, and even if they do, if they aren't comfortable having people in their home, they don't have to.

About 6 months after getting clean I bumped into another ex addict and in a small but crowed cafe she shouted “omg, you’ve put on so much weight” it was a massive compliment and I was still only a size 8 (uk) but the horror on people’s faces 😆😆 You never know what people are going through/got through so unless it’s a close friend, be careful with your comments or praises.

I was overweight most of my life, we’re talking approx 200lbs on a small boned 5’3 body. I became anorexic due to necessary medications I have to take for seizures. Now people have gone from suggesting fad diets to complimenting me on how I can eat anything I want and never gain an ounce. They’re NOT helping at all. Why can’t people just shut up about other people’s bodies.

I have a tendency to smile most of the time, especially in public. I've met many really nice people because they see you as approachable and they start up conversations. It sometimes would drive my coworkers crazy because "You attract crazies" (their words). My mom, sister and I would be out shopping and random people would ask me for help finding things not realizing I didn't work there and if I knew where the item was, I would just go ahead and show them where to find it. I'd pick up a second job working with the public like retail or bartending. I always got compliments from customers about being cheerful. Smiling puts you in a better mood too.

For the person asking "why these kind of professional meetings don't happen at a workplace," many freelancers and entrepreneurs have meetings at cafes or over lunch or dinner, it's really common and most of the time no controlling GF or BF interruptd.

They know that, they’re saying it shouldn’t. Blurred lines between work and socializing dates back to when only men were working in business except for subordinates. There’s quite a bit of thought about this and it’s better for women, usually, If work is work and socializing is socializing, because creepy men are often trying to take advantage of the overlap.

Yeah but lots of people also use extremely inappropriate types of restaurants or bar type areas that are adult entertainment breastaurant type areas. Which is exceptionally disgusting and inappropriate and not even remotely professional or okay. So..... I kinda get the idea we need to start separating work from social things like eating out when there's bad actors using gross meeting areas and acting like it's needed for business meetings... I think it's fine if it's a cafe or boring coffee shop, but an inappropriate breastaurant or club setting is not okay. You could literally do coffee and donuts and ask a local library for use of their meeting rooms. My man I feel confident that he wouldn't stay if it was a bar, or an inappropriate setting like hooters, strip club, or mini skirt sports bar that someone was taking him to, and he wouldn't cheat on me, but..... That's my man, and that's me, and we are only two people. There are so many people who are willing to take people to these locations and try and act like it's appropriate and fine for everyone, and it's not. Business meetings and professional meetings should not be in a situation that can seem sexualized or date like in nature. There's no need for it, even if you don't work in an office there's plenty of alternatives to eating out. I get the idea that we should separate business and social hour... But I also get a cafe or coffee shop, but it's gotta stay at locations that are not using skimpy attire or sexualized themes, or it crosses countless lines. Also, I think it's pretty obvious to most of us that most partners that freak out are likely doing so due to their partners previous infidelity... I feel like in this situation the guy and his gf are both to blame and both probably bad partners tbh, shouldnt be dating or stay married if you can't trust your partner, or they prove untrustworthy.

@themermaidstale5008
@themermaidstale5008 2 ай бұрын
It’s not control, imo. It’s distrust and/or lack of confidence or possibly mental illness. I am not a mental health professional nor do I play one on TV. Anyone wondering why it’s not at work, has never had a job and is probably in junior high school. There are so many possible interruptions just waiting to happen. If it’s a client or a potential client, you want to show appreciation or encourage them to choose your company or company you work for. It’s a normal, adult accepted business practice. It’s one of the perks of being in the work force.

Sure but business and work should not overlap to bikini bars, strip clubs, breastaurants, or any form of entertainment that has sexualized themes or skimpy attire... Like that line should not be crossed. Period. And it very commonly IS crossed. There can be repercussions to saying no to going even if the location is not one you're okay with going to, and that's problematic. Professional work should stay professional, and not cross into adult, sexualized, or skimpy territory.

The thing about being executive about how one complements weight loss is a lot of time they’re revealing they had negative opinions of you in the past they where hiding and if you still have an eating disorder that’s a lot of pressure especially if you relapse or gaining again is part of a healing journey Edit: also a lot of people just do not react well to being told you don’t want to discuss your body and can hold you rejecting that one interaction against you in every other interaction

Lol, had something similar when I lost six stone (84 lbs) due to catching covid whilst I am waiting for lung transplant surgery. I have to admit I eventually took a perverse delight in telling people in confidence that I had all sorts of extremely serious illnesses. Because I remembered what illness I told them I had I was able to identify the people whom I had shared information with and call them out for their indiscretion and for breaching what I had told them, but asked them to keep it confidential. I now know whom I can and cannot trust.

Obvious TW for ED talk, gets worse towards the bottom. . . . . . . . . I started a med that can help with weight loss because my chronic illness uses the same types of meds and losing weight *would* help me Ive banned people from commenting on it. The med makes me accidentally starve myself all the time, I feel awful 24/7, I have to stay up late because if I wake up before med time, Im RAVENOUS and gorge on whatever easy food I can grab (typically not great for you), and I have been through not only my own eating disorder, but also an eating disorder by proxy because my mother was obsessed with losing weight and forced it onto me as well. That chronic illness? It makes it nearly impossible to lose weight, especially if its undiagnosed and left to rot in you. My mother knew I had it but wanted to force me into outpacing it and shamed me when I couldnt, but never told me that she knew I was physically ill. I was triggering her and myself simply because I was sick and she didnt tell me.

Agreed. I have an extremely high matabolism and struggle to keep my weight. People LOVE telling me how I'm "lucky to be able to loose weight easily" until I tell them "yes, not being able to get out of bed without faining is so much fun". The only time I ever comment on weight changes is if I know the person is putting in the work in actually getting healtier. My partner has self esteem issues with his own weight, and I make sure to remind him that a number on the scale doesn't mean much with how jacked he is (he's a pretty strong climber and can pick me up with one hand if he wanted to)

I’ve told my kids not to comment on people’s bodies (unless you’re whispering to tell them about a wardrobe malfunction, lol). I explained that they don’t need to tell someone they’re fat… they already know, and if they don’t, why point it out if they’re happy? It might bother them. This isn’t because I think the fat is shameful (being heavy myself), but because I wanted them to have that insight, and because, tbh, I didn’t want to be the mom in the grocery store covering her face because her kid yelled, “Mom, look, that guy’s SO FAT!” as kids sometimes do. But yeah, my experiences with weight loss are like yours. My dad finally lost weight when his body started to fail him. I lost weight because of panic attacks. I am losing weight because of years of bad health despite the warning of my dad’s too early death. I’m glad no one has complimented me for it. I oly did it because diabetes was on the horizon and I was finally scared enough to act. I do like being more comfortable, though. I was just a bit too plump for it before.

12:21, similar happened to me back in my FD days. Young guy comes to the hotel and asks if we're a safe hotel, gets a room, waits until he's paid and received the room keys to be like, "Thanks so much for helping me! The police are chasing me!" I call the police and am like, "I don't know what's going on, but if y'all are looking for this guy, he's here." Maybe 30 minutes later, officers from the city police and the county sheriff show up and are like, "We don't know how he got away! We had the building surrounded!" So, there's a police stake out on the 2nd floor and an officer is monitoring the situation on our security cameras, and I'm fielding calls from the guy freaking out cuz the police found him and other guests who are like, "Why are there so many cops in the hallway?" It was an interesting night. 😅

Idk if you feel the same and no worries if not!!! For that first story, I think there are many people who do not understand that fact that, in business, most networking happens outside of the office. Networking at a cafe for example is to make both parties more comfortable and make it less of a tense situation. It's super common. Business dinners and such are so common that companies have an actual term for it "Diminimus fringes." (I think I spelled that right). It pretty is the category for small expenses made with company money to enrich or help employees in some way.

They are looking for sympathy, which is okay if you are just having one bad day or a small run of bad luck. But they don't even try to do things that make them happy, unless it's making everyone around them feel horrible. That's sad they they don't love themselves enough to try to do things to give themselves a positive outlook on who they are. No, everyone else has to be more miserable than them to make them feel better in their self-imposed pity party.

The thing with weight loss is that it is a huge mental shift as well. When you lose (or gain) a significant amount of weight, it can cause you to rethink and shift your entire identity and how you see yourself. Depending on where someone is on their journey, they could have changed their physical appearance but still be working on the mental part. Commenting that they look good is fine, but anything past that can step into a vulnerable place depending on where they are in the mental part of the journey.

As someone who has ridden the weight rollercoaster all my life, I know this- it is VERY COMPLICATED. Some people are wanting compliments, some are not, when they lose weight. And that is subject to change. A person who deals with weight loss for decades changes their viewpoint over the years. There is no winning. If you offend someone, just say I’m sorry and move on. Don’t defend your position. But one thing my mother told me as a teen always stuck with me- ‘If someone congratulated you for losing weight, and you DIDN’T lose weight, then that means they think if you as being even bigger than you are.’ So I always tread lightly when it comes to commenting on weight loss. As everyone should. It’s a very multi-faceted issue, mentally.

As someone that had a major weight loss several years ago due to illness, I wouldn't comment on someone's weight unless they bring up the topic first. And for the love of all that is good, please don't make jokes about it. Long story short: I got sick and nearly died when Iwas 19, my body burned off 40 lbs in like 2 days, and the hospital was so awful it traumatized me for a long time and it's still something in my nightmares. I went back to my college classes and everyone commented on my weight loss, even more than asking if I was doing okay, and some of my former friends even joked about me giving them my illness so they could 'lose a few pounds'. It was horrible and made me cry a lot, because I would look in the mirror and all I saw was a sickly husk of myself that survived a near-death experience. I stopped talking to most of them after that - I'm 33 now and have worked through things, but all of that is something I could never forget. Just... unless you know the circumstances and know the person would be okay with it, just don't comment on someone's weight loss. Thank you.

Yep, I went through something similar with losing a ton of weight due to illness, and people commenting that I "look so great!!". I sure don't feel great, and I still struggle daily with trying to eat enough to gain enough weight so I can look healthy, and not sickly. The pain I endure 24/7 causes me to be incredibly nauseous a lot of the time, and eating just makes it so much worse. But people have very little sympathy for skinny people who don't really look sick. I am so sorry that you have had to endure the same, and hope you are feeling much better now and are surrounded by people who genuinely cherish and support you no matter your weight.

@jeanams07 I'm sorry you've had to go through this as well. I still have after-effects, but over time, things can fade. Sending a large hug and well wishes that life is easier and more peaceful, and you are surrounded by loved ones. I've never been a skinny person, been curvy most my life, and it's taken a long time to unlearn the thing ingrained into us all our lives that somehow weight equals health - but it doesn't. Health is very much down to the individual, and outward appearance doesn't have anything to do with it.

For that guy who said if i cant be happy no one can and falsely accused the girl of cheating. Just remember. The saying goes, if there's one, there's more. So just remember that when you are encountering those who you call family or friends who seem like they can't stand to see you succeed at anything. Or those trolls who you run into online. Don't get angry with them. Keep your cool, and show them you're too happy for them to be able to control your emotions. Its kills em everytime.

I lost like 100 lbs in my early 20s. I did take it too far and got down to 96 lbs because every time i looked in the mirror i still looked fat to myself. So i went from being called lardo to things like people saying "you are so skinny. What are you a zero?" Or men that i dont even know telling me he "likes a woman with more meat on their bones." Its pretty hurtful and people need to keep their opinions to themselves. Im glad body shaming is a thing that most people dont accept these days. I would never tell a person my opinion on their looks other than to give them a complement.

for weight loss: only talk about someone's weight loss if either A) you're their doctor/parent of a minor and have to talk about it in relation to a real medical concern or B) if you're trying to lose/gain weight and someone compliments you, genuinely. I had a lady I worked with, about my mom's age, and she knew I was trying to lose weight and she told me one day that she could tell it was going well and that it was working. It made me feel good about my progress!

@jadedbutterfly5013

@tatianasalazar4066 it's not so he doesn't act crazy and toxic. It's so I feel better that he knows. I've been in a lot of toxic relationships, and I do things I'm comfortable with to mitigate any negative feelings. I don't like feeling like I have secrets from him. Plus, if I'm being honest, I cheated before and he forgave me. So, by sharing information with him, it bridges anything that could possibly come up. I've since gotten clean, 5/26/21, and have changed my ways. I'll never again be the person I was. And he understands that. By sharing with him those things, it helps keep the relationship healthy. This is honestly the most healthy relationship I've ever had. And I work to keep it and that trust. I respect your insight, tho. You're not wrong. In my last relationship, that would have been safe advice. NGL. He was toxic and jealous. I'm so glad I'm out of that.

Because I love giving props to people who genuinely need/want them, but I'm dying inside
