I hear you eric. The thing is that comics always used political satire & social commentary as a way to get a message across. The cartoons tried to steer away a bit because fear of complaints & the fact the series ran on FOX which is a republican semi conservative channel. I say semi because after all they did ran shows like married with children & to this day have shows like family guy. In recent times , marvel has tried so desperate to give shock value to their comics & they have made gay super heroes but also made some we grew up with turn from straight to gay. One example is ice-man. What I think will occur is they'll copy the comics & add the gay characters or have iceman come out the closet.

To get mad about a man who’s using his experience to inform X-Men, which even 97 cartoon was highly political, is really telling. X-Men was a movie that always served as a real world allegory for race/bias against real world minorities. To forget that men who were lgbt or black face real world racism and bias and have a love for the 97 show and combining this. At first I didn’t want this show because of shows like Evolution or W&TXM or even a new take of the X-Men universe getting ignored but this ironically made me more excited to see 97 and want to see it succeed.

no, no one is mad. i have the right to an opinion and to chose to watch something. youre right, the source material was about real world issues, so stick to the source material. director doesnt need to bring his life into it.
@michealmahmoud6391

@@8-BitEric Yes the source material includes church persecution, mutants getting lynched for being different, the Legacy virus which mirrored the real life AIDs scandal, Iceman who during Scott Lobdell run was hinted at being gay (not to mention X2 where Bobby came out as a mutant to his parents), Northstar coming out as a gay mutant. Why a black gay man couldn’t see how using his own experiences could help with the storytelling of the X-Men run he’s handling. /s Writers often use examples or their own personal real life experiences to influence the stories they create , Frank Miller with Daredevil and the Dark Knight Returns, Stan Lee, etc . That argument makes no sense telling someone not to include their personal stories in something.

“X-men has always been served as a real world allegory for race/bias against real world minorities” this is the first time I’ve heard about this. Where were these comments in the 90s, 2000s? No just because it’s popular today to be “diverse and gay” in films/tv we gotta cherry pick past IP’s to find meanings of things that were never there before.

To everyone getting on the people’s case about not wanting this to be woke and saying “well XMen has always been about social commentary and what’s going on in the real world”. You aren’t understanding the fans backlash. It’s not about not wanting gay input or gay life experiences to be discussed. We know X-men has always been allegories to real life issues and human emotion/interaction/issues…fans just don’t want the political aspect of social commentary and wokeness into the cartoon. Don’t cheapen an iconic series by shoving down people’s throats what they are tired of which is a forced sole agenda and obvious trivial social political issues that will die out soon and hard. The original creators and writers didn’t do that with X-men. They used real life issues as inspiration and implemented subtle nuances or metaphors or similar things that people can relate to or attach the fantasy to real life historic events and issues. No one wants to see characters step out of the original comic issues to start talking about sexual things, gay things or changing sexual preference. If you want to add a character or make an episode where a character is gay or fall in love or reveals their secret or relates to the mutants for being gay and not accepted that’s fine as it’s a social issue and realistic, but don’t shove down the audience throat leftist propaganda and todays boring social politics. Everyone has had enough. If you truly want to respect X-men and it’s legacy than respect the source material and it’s stories and add to the legacy with like minded stories that made people fans to begin with!

X-Men the Animated Series was an awesome show of the 1990s and a personal boyhood favorite. (Only Batman the Animated Series was better!) Disney's X-Men '97 is going to be a catastrophe. Between Star Wars and the MCU, the company's track record speaks for itself; they'll favor politics and representation over action and adventure. The critics will praise it, the fans will criticize it, and Disney will push merchandise that doesn't sell. And it'll be the fault of "toxic man baby bigots" that it fails, and that includes myself. To which I say: *💥 EXCELSIOR! True Believers!💥* See you guys in the comment section! ✌

You know EVERY fantasy world and EVERY fictional story is based on real life issues in some way? Wether it’s something personal in the writer’s life or something that is impacting the world. Everything from cave paintings to Star Wars to the Matrix to Lord of the rings deals with real world stuff in a fantastic way. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to relate and the stories would not be enjoyable. What you need to do is simply watch the stuff that YOU can relate to. If you can’t relate to it? Just don’t watch it. Pretty easy. I hate bees. Actually the only thing I’m truly afraid of. Since I was a kid. You won’t catch me dead near a bee hive. I don’t like One Direction. I’m not gonna go to a One Direction concert and then complain about how bad it was. I’m just, like, staying away from bee hives and NOT listening to 1D. Again. Simple. Try it.
@ryanbeaty4893

Dude, all "fake worlds" comes from real life problems. That's one of the first things you learn as a writer. Star Wars, Final Fantasy, Superman, Godzilla, Wizard of Oz, etc.... every story is inspired by real-life problems and written to have meaning. Yeah, it's escapism but fantasy and comics have always had morals or reflected real life, just done so in a way that is easier for us to digest. Most things aren't Adam Sandler movies. Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with with the attitude of a lot of "woke culture". They do more harm than good to helping end things like racism. But if you think comics and fantasy weren't just copies of real-life problems, then it's probably because you missed it or were choosing not to see it. That includes the X-men.

The X-Men and most heroes of Lee's age were created to reflect changing social norms and culture. They were the "other". He is uniquely qualified to helm a show about heroic others. Should the show be a pulpit for his personal morality and values, no. Destiny, Mystique, Northstar, there is already a history there. Not sure where your rancor comes from if I understood correctly you identified as a "bi" man. You are an "other", you have valuable experiences and a voice and it informs your content. Give it a chance, brother.
@tonyandcooley8835

You’re definitely jumping the gun. There is nothing here that indicates the writer will make any of the characters gay. The key, and you even realized it while you were recording this video, is that mutants are discriminated against in the Marvel Universe. Wether they were created as an allegory for one or all of the communities that have to deal with discrimination irl, there is no denying that there is that element that connects people in these communities to the characters and Xavier’s dream. That said, the headline and the article says that the writer is drawing on his experience as a gay black man. Can you think of someone better qualified to write a story about a group of superheroes who are feared and hated for no other reason than the fact that they are different? He doesn’t need to make a character gay or black to connect those dots. Doesn’t matter who’s hated or who’s hating, hatred looks and feels the same no matter what. I recommend giving it a chance and judging AFTER you’ve seen the final product. If it’s done right, the experience he draws from could really add weight to the mutant struggle which will resonate with the LGBTQIA+ community, the Black community, the Hispanic community, the Asian community, the White community… and the people that promote hate might actually learn something. Probably not, but maybe? There is this weird war against social Justice and “Wokism”. But if you ain’t woke, what are you? You sleeping? Or you think you’re MORE than awake? Transcendent? 🤷🏽‍♂️ And if you are against social Justice, what is it you’re supporting? These aren’t accusations, though. Just something to think about when you use that terminology. I’d be happy to have a real conversation about this. I want to know more about why this upsets you. I don’t think it’s an anti-gay or racist thing, so what is it, really? Anyway, you’ll influence more people if you approach the situation constructively instead of destructively. Let’s dialogue, man!

I doubt he is going to ruin X-Men since it’s clear he’s a fan of the actual source material. Who cares where he draws inspiration from as long as he stays true to the characters.

“What does being gay and black have to do with anything?” What does us as white straight men have to do with anything? Yet almost all of entertainment in the last 100 years were based around our experiences. Just say you hate to see different types of members of our society have a chance at telling their story and move on. You credited the producer for being upfront about his intent, why not be upfront about your desires?

😭😭😭😭😭 X-Men was my childhood, I was really looking forward to this - but that's a huge red flag, the 97 made it sound like it would be a return to form but it's quickly turning into typical 2023 Marvel SJW bullshit. I'll give it a chance, which is more than I give most Marvel shows, but their track record doesn't leave me hopeful. It's making me worry about the upcoming Wolverine game too.

It could be him using his experiences of prejudice to help shape stories and apply in the context of being a mutant in X-Men. The X-Men is in fact an allegory reflective of the civil rights. And it's not uncommon for people who have faced discrimination, bullying and disability to identify with the X-Men and other various characters. Let's just wait and see. The cast have been really praising the scripts.

*sigh*. So, first I get it. I'm sick of companies using minorities (Disney is the worst, IMO) as marketing gimmicks instead of just writing good stories that happen to have minorities in it. But X-men was almost always an analogy for prejudice. Yes, they were hated for being mutants, but that was symbolism back before comics talked about heavy issues like racism or homophobia. Later, they did. You can find interviews where Stan Lee said characters were inspired by the civil rights movement of the 60's. With that said, I do not want them changing the gender, sexual orientation or race of characters. I agree. Create new characters. But it seems like you just either denied or never caught that X-men is a comic about social prejudice. Having gay or minority characters alone doesn't make it part of the negative "woke culture." It's how they handle it. Honestly, truth is this guy should have kept his mouth shut and just let the writing speak for itself. Which maybe is your point.

Exactly stan lee said he didn't create them for that reason it's just that everyone can relate to feeling left out and that's what their stories were about for being mutants...now if you want to make a character that's gay or whatever do that and make their backstory interesting but they won't do that because they're not talented enough today and they know that it won't sell so they have to piggyback off of known characters and changing them into things they weren't that's the problem they said they're going to do much more in your face stuff than morph in season 2 and the other animated remakes and movies they have on the way

Bruh, I get it, I don't like "woke" crap either, but... it's X-Men. Social commentary and storytelling frameworks about social conflict is a part of its foundation. That's ALWAYS been the case. Well, aside from the basic Tell Superhero Story with Neat Powers and Characters Designs aspect, but still. Don't get me wrong, when this comes out, if it turns out it actually is "woke" trash, I'll be first to denounce it as such. But yeah, it's PRETTY on brand to have it be informed by real world discrimination felt by people who have faced it, regardless of what (with some obvious exceptions) kind or for what purpose. If it's bad, it's bad. If it's good, it's good. But let's not start the whole "what's this doing in a kids cartoon" when the original run said in all but actual name the Holocaust and Nazis with Magneto's backstory. And then later full-force Nazis in the Captain America episode. (And yes, if the show is trying to cram diversity and inclusivity down your throat moreso than the original series did? Oh yeah, 100% it's hijacking.) But let's not ignore what the original series did and hold different standards for the same thing.

I don't have a problem with "wokeness", only "wokeness" done bad (which unfortunately it's been more bad than good). The X-Men have been "woke" since the 70s. Look at the initial cast when Giant Sized X-Men came out. Previously you had Cyclops, Angel, Iceman, Beast, Marvel Girl, Havok, and Polaris. All were white. The group sent to save them were Cyclops, Wolverine (a Canadian), Storm (an African), Nightcrawler (a German), Colossus (a Russian), Banshee (an Irish man), Sunfire (a Japanese man), and Thunderbird (a Native American). A group of people from various ethnicities saved a team of white superheroes. Marvel had a rule against saying that characters were gay back in the late 70s to 80s. To get around that, characters were queer coded. Storm was queer coded into being bi when she cut her hair into the mohawk and befriended Yukio. Rachel Summers with the butch haircut was queer coded. Anyone who read the comics could see that Mystique and Destiny were intended on being a lesbian couple. The Legacy Virus was an allusion to the AIDs epidemic. The X-Men were also full of strong, powerfully written women. One of the best examples is when a depowred Storm defeated Cyclops in combat to become leader. Forget the fact that Madelyn Pryor caused Cyclops to lose by using her powers - that was a later retcon. Chris Claremont, the man responsible for the popularity of the X-Men was a freak. Supposedly, the Hellfire Club was partly based on a fetish club that he frequented.

They are wrong it is a show for us the people who grew up with it to watch with our kids. If it was for kids make them their own property stop leeching from our childhood. If they want to make organic gay black whatever stories make new properties like you said 100 percent agree with you. What is wrong with the mutant part people might not be able to do math these days gotta spell everything ffs. I don't wanna say anything to nasty but I'm not bi and I have legit issues with the injection of gay dick into things that are not. North star they want a gay character make him and his sister. I am not a fan of forced anything ruins the property I'm out and I loved that original show. I have many black friends and many gay friends and they don't want it either. You opened that video perfectly lol. Fn marvel is right. What they have done to the comics is fn pathetic. I'm not against either in any medium until it's a character that is not those things. Ascetics matter the way something looks needs to be kept updated I'm out but that's still OK to update as long as the core is still there like you said about April. F this pisses me off lol. This was my favorite cartoon as a kid and other than South Park, it still is. Hopefully he just means that being discriminated against may have given him some creative topics to focus the story through that lens. However, if it’s just gonna be this character is now gay, this character is now trans, it’s gonna be dumb, not because of representation, but because the focus is more on getting that right, than the story. Just make the story good, don’t care about anything else. And yea, of course I liked Spider-Man and Batman too, but X-Men was my fav, had all the toys.
